GeForce Experience 3.21.0 arrived with NVIDIA’s RTX 30-series laptop launch on January 26, 2021, adding WhisperMode 2.0 support. The update also expanded Freestyle and Ansel support to 38 games and added optimal settings support for 58 games. WhisperMode 2.0 lets a user choose a target acoustic level while the laptop adjusts performance-related settings, but it only works on compatible notebooks with the required firmware support.
What GeForce Experience 3.21 added
HotHardware reported on January 26, 2021 that GeForce Experience 3.21.0 added WhisperMode 2.0 support for the RTX 30 laptop launch. The release also expanded NVIDIA Freestyle and Ansel support to 38 games and added optimal settings support for 58 games. HotHardware’s release report describes the accompanying software changes.
How WhisperMode 2.0 works
WhisperMode 2.0 is an NVIDIA laptop feature that gives users control over a desired acoustic level. NVIDIA says its algorithms dynamically manage the CPU, GPU, game settings, system temperatures, and fan speeds to balance sound and performance. It is designed as a system-level laptop capability, not simply a GeForce Experience toggle that behaves identically on every notebook. NVIDIA’s January 2021 RTX 30 laptop announcement describes the feature.
NVIDIA’s support documentation says WhisperMode makes a plugged-in compatible laptop quieter by pacing frame rate and configuring graphics settings for power efficiency. Actual noise and performance depend on the particular laptop, firmware, game, and settings. The cited announcements do not establish a universal decibel reduction or a guaranteed frame-rate result.

Which RTX 30 laptops support WhisperMode 2.0?
An RTX 30-series name alone does not guarantee support. NVIDIA Support, in an article updated August 4, 2025, specifies that WhisperMode 2.0 requires an RTX 3050-or-newer notebook GPU, video-BIOS support, and notebook system-BIOS support. OEM control software can also affect availability. The same article says the original WhisperMode supports GeForce GTX 10 Series or newer notebook GPUs; that broader requirement should not be confused with the RTX 3050-and-newer threshold for version 2.0. Why WhisperMode may be missing or say “Not Ready”
Check these causes in order:
- GPU eligibility: Confirm the laptop has a supported notebook GPU. For WhisperMode 2.0, NVIDIA specifies RTX 3050 or newer.
- Firmware support: Check the laptop manufacturer’s support page for a video-BIOS or system-BIOS update. NVIDIA says both forms of BIOS support are required.
- OEM performance mode: Aggressive modes in utilities such as Alienware Command Center, ASUS Armoury Crate, HP OMEN Command Center, MSI Dragon Center, or Razer Synapse can disable WhisperMode. Try the utility’s balanced or quiet preset and check availability again.
- Power state: NVIDIA describes WhisperMode as making a plugged-in laptop quieter while gaming, so connect the charger when checking whether the feature is ready.
What else came with the RTX 30 laptop launch?
NVIDIA announced more than 70 GeForce RTX gaming and creator laptop designs. RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 laptop GPUs began shipping January 26, 2021; RTX 3060 laptop GPUs followed on February 2, 2021. These are historical launch dates, not statements about current stock or availability.

The third-generation Max-Q package included Dynamic Boost 2.0, DLSS, WhisperMode 2.0, and Resizable BAR. NVIDIA said Dynamic Boost 2.0 uses AI to balance power among the CPU, GPU, and GPU memory on a per-frame basis. The company claimed that a GPU-bound workload could receive up to 20W more GPU power; that is a vendor-published maximum, not an independent test result or a promise for every laptop.
The launch announcement also covered second-generation RT Cores, third-generation Tensor Cores, NVIDIA Broadcast, and NVIDIA Reflex. NVIDIA’s claims at the time included up to 2x FP32 throughput for RTX 30 laptop GPUs and DLSS support in more than 30 games. Those figures describe the company’s January 2021 announcement, not a current benchmark comparison.

What to compare when choosing an RTX 30 laptop
The GPU model—RTX 3060, 3070, or 3080—is only one part of a laptop’s performance. OEM power limits, cooling design, and clock settings vary between systems carrying the same GPU name. For WhisperMode 2.0 specifically, verify firmware support rather than assuming it from the graphics chip.

- GPU model and power configuration: Check the laptop’s exact GPU and its OEM power profile.
- Cooling and acoustics: Compare the complete laptop design; the GPU label alone does not predict fan noise.
- WhisperMode firmware support: Confirm video-BIOS and system-BIOS compatibility for the specific model.
- Display: Match resolution and refresh rate to the games and workloads you care about.
- Max-Q features: Check which features the specific laptop implements; availability can vary by design.
- Creator and streaming requirements: Consider whether features such as NVIDIA Broadcast or the laptop’s other hardware meet your recording, call, or streaming needs.
