GasBuddy is the better fit for dedicated price hunting because it lists nearby stations with price, distance, brand and amenity filters where its United States and Canada coverage is available. Waze is better for navigation-first drivers who want to compare fuel stops without leaving the route. Neither app guarantees the lowest total cost: check the fuel grade, update freshness and detour distance before you commit.
What matters more than the app’s headline price
A fuel app can reduce the time spent checking station signs, but its displayed number is only one part of the decision. A station showing a lower price may require a detour, sell a different grade than the one you need, or have an old or conditional price. The useful features are the ones that let you see comparable stations quickly and judge whether the stop fits your trip.
- Search radius and sorting: Can you see enough nearby stations and sort by price, distance or both?
- Fuel and station filters: Can you select regular, mid-grade, premium or diesel, and exclude stations you cannot use?
- Price provenance and age: Is the number user-reported, government-supplied or otherwise identified, and is there an update indicator?
- Route integration: Can the app add a sensible stop without making the detour cost more than the pump-price saving?
- Conditional savings: Are rewards, card discounts or price locks available at the station you will actually visit?
There is no independent head-to-head study showing that one app always finds the cheapest fuel or produces a particular average saving. Coverage, reporting rules and station participation vary by country and can change.
GasBuddy versus Waze at a glance
| Need | GasBuddy | Waze | Retailer or government tools |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nearby price comparison | Dedicated station search; results can be sorted by price, distance or both, with brand, rating and amenity filters. | Fuel searches can be sorted by price, distance or brand after you set fuel preferences. | Usually limited to one retailer or a particular jurisdiction; government tools may publish prices under a local reporting scheme. |
| Navigation | The app listing describes mapping fuel prices for road trips; confirm the current route workflow in your app version. | Navigation-first. Fuel preferences are configured on the phone and apply when using Waze in the car. | Directions or links to a map may be available, but this differs by service. |
| Price source and freshness | Its Google Play listing says prices are reported by the user community, so update timing can be uneven. | Data availability and sourcing depend on the country. Do not assume the same feed is used everywhere. | A government feed can have different reporting rules from community entries; check timestamps and geographic coverage. |
| Geography | GasBuddy states that its gas-price coverage is the United States and Canada. | Country support and the amount of price data vary. | Highly local; the Australian and UK examples below are separate arrangements. |
| Savings beyond the posted price | Rewards and payment-linked programs are advertised, subject to enrollment, station and card conditions. | The cited help documentation covers search preferences, not a payment discount. | Retailer apps may offer loyalty rewards or price locks only at their own participating sites. |

GasBuddy: the dedicated comparison option
Finding and sorting stations
GasBuddy’s Finding Stations help page, updated November 6, 2024, says an app search displays around 50 of the closest stations. You can sort results by price, distance or both, then filter by brand, rating and amenities. That combination is useful when your real question is “best gas prices near me” rather than “where is the next fuel stop?”
- Open the station-finding view and allow location access, or enter the destination area manually.
- Select the fuel type and grade you need before comparing numbers.
- Sort by price to find the lowest displayed figure, then switch to distance to see how much farther it is.
- Apply brand, rating or amenity filters only when they matter to the stop.
- Open the station details and check the reported time, grade and any eligibility note before starting the detour.
Why a station can disappear
GasBuddy warns that filters can suppress a location. Club stations such as Costco and Sam’s Club may not appear until you reset filters or inspect the map. If a familiar station is missing, clear every filter first; do not conclude that it is closed or has no price listing.
Coverage and price source
The GasBuddy Google Play listing, updated July 29, 2026, says the service relies on its user community to report prices and covers the United States and Canada: GasBuddy: Find & Pay for Gas. A community-reported number may be useful but can be older than the sign at the pump. Compare the update indicator and, when the saving is substantial, verify the price on arrival.

Rewards and Pay with GasBuddy+ terms
GasBuddy’s membership page, updated September 9, 2026, lists provider-published terms rather than an independent savings test. Free Pay with GasBuddy+ savings are described as 2–25 cents per gallon on card transactions when enrolled in Auto Pay, including a stated guaranteed 3 cents per gallon at stations nationwide where Mastercard is accepted. The same page lists Premium at $9.99 per month or $99 per year and Plus at $7.99 per month or $89 per year. Eligibility is tied to Pay with GasBuddy+ cardholders enrolled in Auto Pay, and station participation, caps and other conditions apply. See the current Membership Levels terms before paying for a plan. Do not treat the 25-cent maximum as a typical saving, and include any membership fee when calculating your break-even point.
The app listing also mentions Flash Deals and rewards. Those offers are conditional, so compare the final eligible price with an ordinary nearby station rather than assuming an offer beats every alternative.
Waze: price comparison inside navigation
Set the preferences before you search
Waze’s help page explains how to set a preferred fuel type and brand: Set preferred gas stations. In the app, open Settings, choose Vehicle details (the label can vary by app version), select your fuel type and preferred brand, and save. Those preferences are then used when you search for fuel while navigating.

Sort by the trade-off you actually care about
When a route is active, search for fuel stations and sort the results by price, distance or brand. Price sorting finds the lowest displayed number; distance sorting minimizes a detour; brand sorting is useful when you need a particular loyalty program or payment acceptance. A farther station can erase its pump-price advantage through extra fuel use, time and possibly tolls, so inspect the route preview rather than accepting the first result.

Waze’s fuel-price availability and sourcing are not uniform worldwide. In its 2024 report, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said users can see fuel stations and prices in Waze but that it could not confirm the source of the prices displayed there. That is a reason to treat a displayed number as a lead to verify, not as proof that it is current in every market.
Retailer and government tools: useful complements, not universal replacements
Australia: government feeds and retailer-only price locks
The ACCC’s 2024 guide, Making the most of fuel price apps and websites, describes a mixed data environment. PetrolSpy uses state and territory government fuel-price transparency data for most Australian jurisdictions and manually entered crowdsourced prices in Victoria. It also lets users list prices and sort by proximity or price. The source and reporting rules therefore depend on the state or territory.

- ▲Suitable for most 12V gasoline vehicles

The same report describes My 7-Eleven Fuel Lock as a retailer-specific example: it locked the cheapest price among the user’s five closest 7-Eleven fuel stores within a 250-kilometre radius, was redeemable at any Australian 7-Eleven fuel store within seven days, and covered up to 150 litres with a maximum discount of 25 cents per litre under the terms reviewed. Those terms may have changed. Because the offer covered only that retailer’s stations, a market-wide comparison was still needed to know whether the locked price was competitive.
United Kingdom: Fuel Finder data in Google Maps and Waze
The UK arrangement is a separate, country-specific case. An October 8, 2026 TechRadar report, attributing the information to the BBC and Google, says Google Maps and Waze fuel prices in the UK draw from the government’s Fuel Finder service. It reports that forecourts must submit changed prices within 30 minutes and that Google may omit a price when confidence is too low.
Sarah-Jayne Williams, Google’s director of product partnerships for Google Maps and Waze, was quoted in that report: “Accuracy is very important, so we will still show the petrol station and where it is, but you’ll only see a price if we have high confidence that it’s the right price,”. This statement describes the UK rollout; it should not be generalized to other countries or assumed to remain unchanged without checking current official information.

Calculate the cheapest stop, not just the cheapest number
Use the displayed price as an input to a simple total-cost check. If Station A is 8 cents per gallon cheaper but requires a 12-mile round trip, estimate the extra fuel used for that detour and multiply it by your current fuel price. Add tolls and the value of significant extra driving time where relevant. The saving is real only if the pump-price difference exceeds those costs.
- Match the grade: Compare regular with regular, premium with premium and diesel with diesel. A lower number for a different grade is not a saving.
- Check the unit: US and Canadian listings commonly use cents per gallon, while Australian offers may use cents per litre and UK prices are generally shown per litre.
- Check station eligibility: A card discount, loyalty reward or price lock may exclude independent stations, club stations, certain payment methods or purchases above a cap.
- Check freshness: Look at the reported time or confidence indicator. If the difference matters, confirm in a second source and at the pump.
- Account for access: A station on the opposite side of a divided highway, behind a toll or inside a restricted facility may be impractical despite its map distance.
A reliable five-minute workflow before leaving
- Choose the comparison source. Start with GasBuddy for a dedicated US/Canada search, Waze when the route is already in navigation, or a local government/retailer tool when its reporting scheme covers your area.
- Set the exact fuel grade and any necessary brand preference. Do this before sorting so the list is comparable.
- Review at least three nearby candidates. Note price, distance, update time and whether the station is on your side of the route.
- Compute the detour. Compare the pump-price saving with extra miles or kilometres, tolls and time.
- Verify conditional benefits. Open the current reward, card or price-lock terms and confirm the station participates, the payment method qualifies and any cap leaves enough fuel for your fill.
- Navigate and recheck. Prices can change while you drive. If the app shows no recent update or the saving has narrowed, use the convenient station rather than chasing a stale number.
Common failure modes and fixes
The cheapest station is not listed
Reset GasBuddy filters and inspect the map, especially for club stations. In Waze, check that the preferred brand setting has not narrowed the results. A retailer app may show a site that a market-wide tool omits, while the reverse can also happen.
The displayed price is lower than the pump
Check the fuel grade and timestamp first. Community reports can lag, and a retailer offer may require a particular card, account or payment flow. Treat an unverified, unusually large difference as uncertain until the station sign confirms it.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A reward does not apply
Review enrollment, Auto Pay or card requirements, station participation, per-transaction or monthly caps and whether the offer applies to the grade purchased. Compare the net price after any membership fee with an ordinary station nearby.
The app shows stations but no prices
This can mean that the local feed is unavailable or that confidence is too low. In the UK rollout described above, Google may intentionally show the station without a price. Use another local source, then verify at the forecourt instead of interpreting a missing number as a high or low price.
Which option fits your driving pattern?
- You routinely shop for the lowest nearby price in the United States or Canada: Start with GasBuddy’s price sorting and filters, then check the detour and report age.
- You want the next practical stop during a trip: Use Waze, set the correct fuel type, and compare distance as well as price in the route view.
- You drive in a market with a government transparency scheme: Use the government-backed or locally established tool for provenance, while checking its reporting interval and geographic limits.
- You are loyal to one fuel retailer: Add that retailer’s app for rewards or a price lock, but compare its eligible stations with a market-wide source before assuming the offer is cheapest.
- You are considering a paid savings plan: Estimate your monthly gallons or litres, realistic eligible discount and membership cost. A provider’s maximum advertised discount is not an average result.
Bottom line
Choose the app that exposes the comparison you actually need: GasBuddy for dedicated sorting and filters where its coverage is useful, Waze for fuel stops integrated with navigation, and local government or retailer tools when their data or offers are specific to your market. The winning decision is the station with the lowest verified total trip cost for the correct grade—not automatically the lowest number on a screen.
