They share a sandbox heritage, but they are aimed at different activities: playing and remixing existing content versus building games.
What is the difference between Garry’s Mod and s&box?
Facepunch describes Garry’s Mod as a physics sandbox without predefined aims or goals. Players can spawn objects, weld them into contraptions and play alone or online. Its official description also points to community modes such as Trouble in Terrorist Town and Prop Hunt. Garry’s Mod on Steam
s&box is a game-creation platform released on Steam on April 28, 2026. Facepunch presents it as a Source 2 environment for making and sharing games, with C#, an editor, hot reload and built-in multiplayer workflows. Is s&box like Garry’s Mod?
There is a family resemblance: both are Facepunch products associated with player creativity. But s&box is not simply Garry’s Mod rebuilt on a newer engine. Facepunch’s release announcement framed it as a separate creation platform rather than a direct Source 2 port. That distinction matters when deciding what to buy. Garry’s Mod is presented as a game you can start playing with tools and community content; s&box is presented around making games with an editor and code. The official material does not establish a direct feature-by-feature comparison or show that one is objectively faster, better-looking or more complete.
How do the creation and publishing workflows compare?
Garry’s Mod: build inside an established sandbox
Garry’s Mod’s central loop is to use its in-game tools to spawn objects, pose them and join or create play experiences. Facepunch reports more than 300,000 free Workshop models, maps and contraptions, though the product page gives no date for that total. It also reports more than 25 million units sold and more than one million Steam reviews; those are publisher figures without an as-of date, not independently audited current counts. s&box: make games in an editor
s&box’s advertised toolkit includes modern C#, a Source 2-based engine, an editor, hot reload, multiplayer support and publishing from the editor. The product site also advertises standalone export and a Play Fund. Facepunch’s release post describes an ambition to help creators earn money, but that should not be read as guaranteed income or unrestricted distribution.
There is an important publishing qualification: the developer documentation says standalone distribution is in preview, subject to Valve approval and a Facepunch license. It also says Facepunch takes no engine royalties or revenue share, while Steam’s standard terms and revenue share still apply. s&box standalone publishing documentation

What should you know about price and current status?
Both products are available through Steam, but the official pages reviewed do not establish a stable, region-specific current price for s&box. Its site noted a price drop in an update dated September 15, 2026, so check the live Steam listing for your region before deciding. s&box on Steam
Both products have recent official updates: Garry’s Mod’s homepage lists a September 16, 2026 update covering 64-bit Windows builds and Sandbox improvements, while s&box’s site shows updates through September 29, 2026. Which sandbox game should you choose?
- Pick Garry’s Mod if you want to play now, experiment with physics, build contraptions or explore an established catalog of community content.
- Pick s&box if you want a creation workflow centered on C#, Source 2, an editor and publishing games, and you are comfortable with the specific qualifications around standalone distribution.
The official pages support this use-case distinction, not a universal winner. They do not provide comparable performance testing, hardware requirements, player-population data or a consistent measure of creator difficulty, so those factors cannot be reliably ranked here. Check each Steam listing and current documentation for the details that matter to your setup and region.
