Garmin’s free software update, announced February 24, 2026, adds dozens of features to selected high-end and mid-range watches. The release covers the Venu X1, vívoactive 6, fēnix 8 Pro, Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970, with related fēnix, Enduro, tactix, quatix, D2 and Instinct models included in Garmin’s compatibility table. Availability is model-specific rather than universal.
What the February 2026 update adds
The update combines training, navigation, lifestyle and accessibility improvements. Garmin describes it as a free software and feature release; it is not a new hardware generation.
- Enhanced gear tracking: Assign gear to Garmin Connect activities and automatically record distance, activity count, hours and days of use on the watch or in the Garmin Connect app.
- Race course planner: Build a course with cut-off times, rest plans, checkpoints and aid stations, then view it on a compatible watch.
- On-wrist sports scores: See scores from 15 supported sports leagues when the watch is paired with a smartphone.
- Mixed-session recording: Record multiple activities within one session instead of saving each segment as a separate activity.
- Garmin Fitness Coach: Guided plans cover more than 25 activity types, although the exact activities and coaching functions depend on the watch.
- Sleep alignment and lifestyle logging: New tools connect sleep targets and daily habits with training and health information.
- Varia voice alerts: Compatible watches can provide spoken alerts from a paired Garmin Varia rearview radar.
- Accessibility: Spoken watch-face data and color-filter options make key information easier to hear or distinguish.
Garmin says the features are intended to help users improve health and fitness, understand their bodies and get more from their smartwatch. No official aggregate percentage for performance, battery-life or adoption improvement was published.

Garmin’s February compatibility table spans several product families, but a watch receiving the update does not necessarily receive every feature. The table below summarizes the models named in the release and the main factors that determine what appears after installation.

| Watch family or model | Update status | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Venu X1 | Included | Feature availability varies; smartphone pairing is needed for sports scores. |
| vívoactive 6 | Included | Check the model-specific feature list; some premium golf functions require Garmin Golf Membership. |
| fēnix 8 Pro and related fēnix 8 models | Included in the compatibility coverage | Confirm which training, navigation, accessibility and accessory-dependent features your exact edition supports. |
| Forerunner 570 | Included | Training features can differ from the Forerunner 970; verify the watch’s feature matrix. |
| Forerunner 970 | Included | Supports the release’s compatible running and coaching functions subject to accessory requirements. |
| Enduro 3, tactix 8, quatix 8, D2 Mach 2 and selected Instinct models | Covered in Garmin’s compatibility table | Availability is specific to model and software version. |
The June 2, 2026 feature listing adds further model-by-model distinctions, including recovery mode, workout execution score, mobility activity and health-status history. Treat those capabilities as compatibility questions, not as universal features of the February release.
Accessory and phone requirements
Garmin Connect
Garmin Connect is the normal companion for syncing the watch, assigning gear and receiving updates. A smartphone connection is specifically required for on-wrist sports scores. You can also update through Garmin Express on a computer.

HRM 600
Running economy and step speed loss, introduced in Garmin’s August 28, 2025 training update, require the Garmin HRM 600 heart-rate monitor, sold separately. The February 2026 update does not remove that requirement. Other running tools, such as running tolerance, can be available without that sensor when supported by the watch.
Varia radar
Varia voice alerts require a compatible Garmin Varia rearview radar paired to the watch. Without the radar, the watch cannot generate vehicle-approach alerts.

Garmin Golf Membership
Premium golf features listed June 2, 2026 for Venu 4, vívoactive 6 and D2 Air X15 require a paid Garmin Golf Membership. That membership is separate from the free software update and is not required for the general training, course-planning or accessibility additions.
Training features carried forward from the August 2025 update
Garmin’s August 28, 2025 update added several compatible-model training tools that remain relevant when comparing watches:
Rank #4
- Make a bold statement with this rugged GPS smartwatch, featuring a 0.9” display with solar charging lens and unlimited battery life with solar charging (assumes all-day wear with 3 hours per day outside in 50,000 lux conditions)
- Engineered with a supertough 45 mm fiber-reinforced polymer case and metal-reinforced bezel
- Built-in LED flashlight with variable intensities and strobe modes gives you greater visibility in the outdoors and provides convenient illumination when you need it
- Know your body better with health monitoring features, including wrist-based heart rate, advanced sleep monitoring, Pulse Ox and more (this is not a medical device, and data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked; Pulse Ox not available in all countries)
- Navigate confidently with a 3-axis compass, barometric altimeter and multi-band GPS with SatIQ technology, which delivers superior positioning while also optimizing battery life
- Running tolerance: Estimates the impact of each run and recommends a weekly maximum mileage.
- Garmin Triathlon Coach: Structured coaching for supported triathlon watches.
- Track-format daily suggested workouts: Workouts formatted for track running where supported.
- Running economy and step speed loss: Advanced running metrics that require HRM 600.
- Evening Report: Before bed, reminders show needed sleep plus the next day’s workout, weather and events.
- Smart Wake Alarm: Uses the watch’s sleep data to target a suitable wake time where supported.
How to install the update
- Charge the watch and connect it to Wi-Fi or a paired phone.
- Open Garmin Connect and sync the watch. In the watch’s software-update settings, enable automatic updates if that option is available.
- When an update notification appears, accept it and keep the watch on its charger until installation finishes.
- Alternatively, connect the watch to a computer, open Garmin Express, select the device and install the offered software update.
- After restarting, sync again and check the feature-specific settings. Some tools, such as sports scores, require phone pairing; sensor-based metrics require the relevant accessory.
Menus and rollout timing can differ by model, region and software version. If no update appears, confirm that the exact model is in Garmin’s compatibility table, sync again later and check Garmin Express.
What to verify before relying on a new feature
- Identify the exact watch model and edition; family names do not guarantee identical software.
- Check whether the feature needs Garmin Connect, a smartphone, HRM 600, Varia radar or Golf Membership.
- For race planning, enter cut-off times, rest plans, checkpoints and aid stations before starting the event and verify the course on the watch.
- For health and training metrics, wear the watch consistently and follow Garmin’s sensor-pairing instructions; missing data can limit recommendations.
- Review accessibility settings after updating, especially spoken watch-face data and color filters, so alerts match your environment.
Bottom line for Garmin owners
The February 2026 release is a substantial free feature update rather than a single headline fix. Its most practical additions are automatic gear-use statistics, richer race-course planning, phone-linked sports scores, mixed-session recording, broader Fitness Coach support and new accessibility controls. Whether a particular watch receives each item depends on the model, while advanced running metrics and radar alerts still require their respective accessories.
