A soft reset usually means restarting a Garmin watch to recover it from a freeze; a factory reset changes the watch’s settings and may also erase stored data. Some Garmin models offer a reset that restores settings but keeps personal information, alongside a separate option that deletes it. Sync first and check the exact wording for your model before confirming any data-deleting reset.
Soft reset vs. factory reset: the practical difference
| Choice | Main purpose | Likely effect | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restart or forced restart, often called a soft reset | Recover a frozen or unresponsive watch | Usually does not erase saved activities, but recent steps or the current time may be lost. | The watch is temporarily unresponsive. |
| Restore default settings | Return settings to their defaults | Some models retain user-entered information and activity history. | You want to revert settings and your model explicitly offers this retain-data option. |
| Delete data and reset settings, or master reset | Return the watch to factory setup and remove stored information | Can erase user-entered information and activity history; effects vary by model. | Only after syncing and checking what your model says it will delete. |
This is a comparison of distinctions documented in Garmin’s support instructions, not a guarantee that every watch uses the same labels or behaves identically. Garmin’s Venu 2 instructions, for example, separate a settings reset that preserves user information and activity history from a delete-data reset (Garmin Venu 2 reset guidance).
How to restart a frozen Garmin watch
For a Garmin watch with a physical power button, Garmin’s troubleshooting guidance says to press and hold the power button until the watch turns off; the hold may take up to 30 seconds. Press the button again to turn it back on. This is guidance for a frozen watch, not a universal button sequence for every model (Garmin watch troubleshooting).
A restart is not the same as a data-deleting reset. Still, Garmin warns that recent information such as steps or the current time may be lost. Another Garmin wearable support page says minor recent data, such as steps, may be lost while saved activities should not be affected (Garmin wearable restart guidance).

Will a Garmin reset delete my activities?
It depends on the reset option and the watch. On the Venu 2, Garmin distinguishes Reset Default Settings, which keeps user-entered information and activity history, from Delete Data and Reset Settings, which deletes them. For that model, Garmin also says the delete-data option removes the Garmin Pay wallet and stored music (Venu 2 reset instructions).
Garmin’s Approach guidance likewise distinguishes restoring defaults without deleting user-created information such as activities from a master reset that deletes saved data. Garmin’s marine wearable reset list says its listed procedures return devices to original factory settings and delete stored user data. Those instructions vary by family and model (Garmin marine wearable reset list; Garmin Approach reset guidance).

Sync before a reset that may erase data
Before choosing a delete-data or master-reset option, sync the watch with Garmin Connect so activity data is uploaded. Garmin’s Venu 2 instructions explicitly advise syncing before resetting; its marine wearable guidance also says to ensure fitness data has recently synced. For an Approach device, Garmin says to sync with Garmin Connect or Garmin Golf before a master reset.
How to choose the right reset
- If the watch is frozen: try the restart procedure in Garmin’s troubleshooting guidance for your model. Do not choose a delete-data option just to restart it.
- If you want settings back at their defaults: look for a retain-data option such as Reset Default Settings, if your model offers one. Confirm its stated effect in the model-specific instructions.
- If you intend to erase stored information: sync first, then read the on-screen wording carefully. Check whether it names activities, user-entered information, wallet details, music, or other data.
- Before using any button sequence or menu path: identify the exact watch model and consult its current Garmin support page or owner’s manual. Procedures and labels are model-specific; do not copy another watch’s sequence.
If restarting does not fix the problem
If the watch keeps freezing or rebooting, check for available software updates and follow Garmin’s model-specific troubleshooting before considering a reset that deletes data. A reset can remove information without addressing an underlying software or device problem.
