There is no universal best gaming handheld: the right choice depends on the games and launchers you use, the performance you expect away from a charger, and whether you need a console-style experience or a portable PC. Compare devices under the same workload, treat manufacturer battery figures as estimates rather than head-to-head test results, and upgrade only when a specific limitation makes the change worthwhile.

How should you compare gaming handheld performance?

Start with the game you actually want to play, not the processor name. A useful comparison holds the game, resolution, graphics settings, frame-rate target, power mode, firmware, and plugged-in status constant. The official product figures available for the devices below do not establish a controlled, same-game performance ranking, so they cannot support a definitive claim that one is fastest in every situation.

  • Check the workload: A demanding 3D game at a high frame rate is a different test from a small 2D game or streaming.
  • Check the power mode: Higher power can improve performance while increasing energy use and heat. A result measured while connected to power is not a battery-mode result.
  • Check the software: The operating system, launcher, game compatibility, anti-cheat requirements, drivers, and interface all affect whether a device suits your games.

ROG Ally X power modes are not interchangeable test conditions

For the 2024 ROG Ally X, ASUS lists 10W Silent, 15W Performance, and 25W Turbo modes, with 30W Turbo available when connected to AC. ASUS’s published FPS examples use Turbo at 30W while plugged in, and ASUS cautions that performance varies with configuration and driver maturity. Those figures should not be read as expected performance while playing on battery. ASUS ROG Ally X specifications and performance information.

Steam Deck OLED vs Lenovo Legion Go S: what should you compare?

These names cover different software and hardware choices, not one simple processor contest. Steam Deck OLED runs Valve’s SteamOS and is built around portable access to the Steam library, with suspend/resume as part of its handheld experience. Lenovo sells the Legion Go S in SteamOS and Windows configurations across different SKUs and processors. Confirm the precise Legion Go S model before comparing specifications; a family-level name alone does not identify its hardware. Valve Steam Deck hardware; Valve Steam Deck OLED; Lenovo Legion Go S.

Battery capacity or runtime 50Wh battery; Valve’s product information estimates 3–12 hours depending on content. Source: Valve. 55.5Wh is listed in Lenovo PSREF results for the identified 8APU1 configuration; confirm the exact SKU rather than applying the figure to every Go S. Source: Lenovo PSREF.
Game-library fit Best assessed against your Steam library and any compatibility requirements of the games you play. Depends on the exact operating-system configuration, launcher needs, and games. Lenovo’s product page identifies variant options but does not establish a universal compatibility or performance advantage.

The table is a way to narrow the choice, not a matched performance or battery test. Decide which operating system and library you want first, then compare the exact SKU and your own target games.

Which handheld should you buy?

Choose by ecosystem and use case rather than by a single headline specification. A Windows handheld such as the 2024 ROG Ally X supports Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic, GOG, and other PC storefronts according to ASUS. Steam Deck emphasizes SteamOS and Steam access. Switch 2 is a Nintendo console with its own game library and storage rules. These are meaningfully different ways to play, so a broader launcher list is not automatically the better choice if the games you want are on another platform. • Favor a SteamOS-focused handheld if your priority is your Steam library and a handheld-oriented interface.
  • Consider a Windows handheld if access to multiple PC storefronts or Windows-specific software is central to your use. Check each game’s compatibility and launcher needs.
  • Consider Switch 2 if the Nintendo game library and console experience are the deciding factors; compare its game-storage requirements before buying a card.

Display type, screen size and resolution, control layout, weight, and grip comfort also matter. Specs can identify differences such as OLED versus LCD, but comfort is subjective; try the device in hand where possible rather than assuming a spec sheet predicts fit.

How long does the battery last?

Battery capacity in watt-hours (Wh) is not the same as playtime. Runtime changes with the game, screen brightness, frame rate, wireless use, graphics settings, and power mode. Manufacturers’ estimates below use different methods and conditions, so they are not a fair cross-device endurance ranking.

Device Manufacturer-stated battery information How to interpret it
Original Steam Deck 40Wh. Valve says most games provide several hours; lighter activities such as streaming, small 2D games, or browsing can reach approximately 7–8 hours at maximum. Source: Valve hardware page. The 7–8-hour figure is for lighter use, not a general estimate for demanding games.
Steam Deck OLED 50Wh, up from 40Wh on the LCD model. Valve claims 30–50% more battery life than LCD and lists 3–12 hours depending on content. Source: Valve OLED page. Valve’s range depends on content; the percentage is Valve’s stated comparison, not an independent matched test.
ROG Ally X (2024) 80Wh. ASUS estimates more than 2.7 hours of heavy AAA gaming on its regional product page. Source: ASUS. This is ASUS’s estimate for heavy AAA gaming, not a guarantee across games, settings, or power modes.
Legion Go S 55.5Wh appears in Lenovo PSREF results for a specific 8APU1 configuration. Source: Lenovo PSREF. This capacity does not establish runtime, and should not be applied to every Go S variant.
Nintendo Switch 2 Approximately 2–6.5 hours, according to Nintendo’s UK specifications. Nintendo says actual life depends on games and usage conditions. Source: Nintendo. This is Nintendo’s estimate, not a result directly comparable with the PC handheld figures above.

For your own decision, use the game and settings you expect to play most. If you need long sessions away from an outlet, look for device-specific estimates for that kind of workload and leave a margin for brighter screens, higher frame rates, and demanding titles. A USB-C PD power bank may help extend a session, but its capacity alone does not translate into a reliable number of extra hours.

Can you upgrade a gaming handheld’s storage?

Yes on some devices, but the supported part and method differ. Check the exact model or SKU and the manufacturer’s compatibility details before buying storage; the same card or drive is not suitable for every handheld.

  • Switch 2: Game storage requires a microSD Express card. Nintendo says ordinary microSD cards can be used only to copy screenshots and videos from the original Switch, not to store Switch 2 games. Nintendo specifications.
  • Legion Go S: Check the storage options for the precise configuration on Lenovo’s product and PSREF pages; do not infer compatibility from another Go S SKU. Lenovo product page; Lenovo PSREF.

When should you upgrade your gaming handheld?

There is no established universal annual or generational upgrade schedule. Upgrade when the current device has a concrete shortcoming that a newer model solves well enough to justify its cost and the disruption of changing devices.

  • Your games do not run acceptably at the settings or frame rate you need.
  • Battery runtime no longer suits the places and session lengths where you play.
  • Storage is inadequate and there is no reasonable compatible expansion path.
  • A newer device adds a feature you specifically value, such as a different operating system, better ergonomics, more memory, or a larger battery.

A model refresh does not necessarily mean a major processor-generation jump. ASUS’s comparison of the original Ally and the 2024 Ally X describes added battery capacity, memory, storage, cooling, ports, and ergonomic changes while retaining the Z1 Extreme processor. Evaluate the improvement that matters to you rather than treating a newer model name as proof of a wholesale performance leap. ASUS Ally versus Ally X comparison.

How do you avoid mixing up similarly named handhelds?

Read the complete product name and SKU before applying specifications. The 2024 ROG Ally X is distinct from the ROG Xbox Ally X (2025); the latter has an ASUS-listed 80Wh battery and a 65W USB-C adapter specification, but whether an adapter is included depends on market and model. Lenovo’s Legion Go S also spans multiple processors and operating systems.
