Gaming conventions do not follow one universal rulebook. Before buying a badge, check the specific event’s age cutoff and supervision rule, accessibility-request deadline, tournament registration and fee requirements, and refund policy. The examples below show how sharply those policies can differ in the 2026 editions.
Are gaming conventions kid-friendly?
Some are designed for mixed-age audiences, while others restrict registration to adults or require a parent or guardian for every minor. “Kid-friendly” therefore depends on the event, the area of the convention you plan to visit, and the child’s age.

These are policy thresholds, not a general industry standard. A convention may also apply different rules to an expo hall, evening events, tournaments, or an adults-only program. Read the current edition’s admission page before assuming that a child’s badge covers every activity.

How to plan for a minor
- Confirm the child’s age on the event dates, not just the year of birth.
- Identify the adult who is responsible for the child throughout registration, lines, meals, and late programs.
- Check whether the guardian must hold a paid badge, as GameACon’s free admission for children six and under is tied to a paid adult.
- Review separate age limits for tournaments and private or evening events.
- Carry the confirmation email and any identification the organizer lists for badge pickup.
Can my child enter a gaming tournament?
Often, but tournament entry is usually separate from convention admission. A child may be allowed inside the venue yet still need a paid tournament registration, a badge, an adult supervisor, or a minimum age for a particular bracket.

What the published policies show

Neither a free child admission nor a parent’s badge automatically means that a child’s tournament seat is free. For GameACon, the entry charge applies to every player, including children. For LVL UP EXPO, waiting until the day of the event could leave a child without a place when a tournament uses preregistration.
A reliable tournament check
- Open the convention’s tournament page, not just the general admission page.
- Record the tournament’s age bracket, start time, venue room, and check-in deadline.
- Determine whether preregistration is required or merely recommended.
- Budget for one entry fee per player and any separate event ticket.
- Confirm who must supervise a minor during matches and while moving between rooms.
- Save the registration receipt and arrive early enough for check-in.
If a rule is unclear, ask the organizer before purchasing. Tournament caps and fees can change by edition, and a convention badge does not guarantee a tournament seat.
Do gaming conventions provide wheelchair access or ADA accommodations?
Major events commonly provide accessible routes and services, but the process for requesting an accommodation is event-specific. Advance notice is important when an organizer needs to arrange equipment, seating, captioning, or a staff escort.

What to include in an accommodation request
- The dates you will attend and the badge or registration name.
- The access feature you need, such as step-free routing, captioning, seating, or a manual wheelchair.
- Whether the request applies to a tournament, session, or other timed activity.
- A phone number or email address where staff can reach you before the event.
Do not wait until arrival if the policy gives a lead time. GameACon’s two-week request window and GDC’s February 16, 2026 deadline are examples of dates that can pass before travel begins. Origins lists physical-access features but describes wheelchair service as limited, so ask about availability rather than assuming a chair will be waiting at the door.
Can I get a refund if I cannot attend?
Refund rights are set by each convention and may differ for a badge, a tournament ticket, a hotel booking, or an organizer-cancelled event. Read the cancellation language before paying and save a copy of the policy that applied to your purchase.

Deadlines are not interchangeable. A two-week BrickCon deadline is not the same as fourteen business days, and LVL UP EXPO’s seven-day window applies to badges. GDC’s $300 charge applies to a registrant-initiated cancellation under the stated 2026 policy; the organizer-cancellation exception is different. Gen Con’s separate badge and event-ticket rules mean that cancelling one purchase may not cancel another.

Refund decision checklist
- Identify exactly what you bought: badge, tournament seat, event ticket, or another add-on.
- Find the cancellation deadline for that item and convert it to your local date and time.
- Check whether the deadline is based on the event start, the first day, or a calendar date.
- Calculate administrative charges, card-processing deductions, or nonrefundable portions.
- Submit the request through the organizer’s stated channel and keep the confirmation.
How to verify a convention’s rules before buying
Policies can change between editions, even when the event name stays the same. Use this sequence for any convention:

- Start with the current edition. Make sure the page identifies the year and event dates. Do not rely on a cached social-media post or an older attendee guide.
- Read admission and age rules together. Look for child pricing, guardian requirements, restricted rooms, and adult-only programming.
- Open the accessibility page. Note request deadlines, contact methods, captioning, mobility equipment, and service limitations.
- Open the tournament or event schedule. Check age brackets, preregistration, capacity, check-in, badge requirements, and per-player fees.
- Read the refund policy before checkout. Record separate deadlines for badges and event tickets and any administrative fee.
- Save evidence. Download or screenshot the policy and your order confirmation so you can show which terms applied when you paid.
If a page does not answer a material question, contact the organizer and ask for a written response. That is especially important for a minor attending without the child’s parent, a tournament with an age-sensitive bracket, or an accommodation that needs equipment reserved in advance.
What should I bring to a gaming convention?
Pack for long lines, crowded rooms, and a full day away from home while following the venue’s own prohibited-item rules.

Check the tournament page first. GameACon permits under-12 players with adult supervision and charges the entry fee per player; a different event may set another age floor or require preregistration.
“I use a wheelchair but have not contacted the organizer.”
Contact the event before purchase when possible. GameACon requests at least two weeks’ notice, GDC 2026 set a February 16, 2026 accommodation-email deadline, and Origins lists accessible infrastructure but only limited manual-wheelchair service.

“The event is public, so every part must be open to my child.”
Not necessarily. BrickCon’s public attendance is all ages, but its private convention is 14+ with a parent or guardian and 18+ for adult fans. Similar separations can exist between an expo floor and evening or tournament programming.
Bottom line for families and first-time attendees
Treat age access, accommodations, tournaments, and refunds as four separate checks. The most useful question is not whether gaming conventions are kid-friendly or accessible in general, but what the specific 2026 event permits, what it requires you to book in advance, and what happens if your plans change. Verify those terms before paying, then keep the confirmation and policy with you when you travel.
