That lets software run on the processor while applications can also load purpose-built hardware into the FPGA. Gameslab is a documented project build, not a verified current retail console, and its Game Boy work should not be mistaken for a confirmed, finished emulator release.
What is Gameslab?
Gameslab is a handheld game-console project designed by engineer Craig J. Bishop. Its defining idea is to pair a conventional software-capable processor with programmable logic, so it can serve as more than a device that runs ordinary software. In Bishop’s words, “The FPGA fabric means that games and apps can bring their own unique hardware to load into the fabric.” (Bishop’s project overview, 2019.)
This makes Gameslab an FPGA-based handheld platform intended for hardware implementations. It does not, by itself, mean that a particular game system has already been reproduced in the FPGA or that the device is a ready-to-buy emulator.
How does its FPGA architecture work?
The Zynq system-on-chip combines an ARM Cortex-A9 processor and FPGA fabric. The processor can handle software, while the configurable logic can be set up to implement specialized hardware. Bishop describes possible uses such as accelerating sprites for a side-scrolling game or placing a Game Boy’s CPU and peripherals in the FPGA fabric. Those examples explain the platform’s intended flexibility; they are not performance measurements or proof that every proposed implementation was completed.

- Package Include: 1PCS* 138K Retro Premium
Bishop’s 2019 overview reports the Zynq FPGA as having 275,000 logic elements. That is a reported chip specification, not a measure of Gameslab’s emulator performance.
What hardware is documented in the build?
The project overview describes a custom board with about 360 components and 512 MB of DDR3 memory. It also documents the following parts of the handheld:

- A touchscreen LCD, buttons, and thumbsticks for display and input.
- Stereo audio hardware.
- A lithium-polymer battery charged through micro-USB.
- Power-management and control circuitry supporting the board.
These are details of Bishop’s documented project build, not specifications for a currently sold consumer product. The overview also recounts sourcing the main Zynq part refurbished through eBay.
Did Gameslab run a Game Boy emulator?
Gameslab and SlabBoy are related, but they are not interchangeable claims. Bishop’s April 2018 article describes SlabBoy as work on a hardware Game Boy emulator intended to run in Gameslab’s FPGA fabric (SlabBoy development account). His later overview uses a Game Boy CPU and peripherals as an example of what an application might load into the fabric.

The available project accounts establish that this implementation was explored; they do not establish that Gameslab shipped with a finished core, supported all Game Boy games, or has a currently maintained Game Boy emulator. Hackster’s December 2019 coverage described Gameslab as having mostly been used for Rust-based demos at that time (Hackster’s project report).
Can you buy a Gameslab console?
The available accounts describe a custom-designed project and do not establish a current production run, retail listing, support channel, or price. That means current purchase availability is unverified; it is not evidence that a unit is categorically impossible to obtain. Hackaday’s December 2019 report also presents Gameslab as an FPGA console project rather than establishing a current retail product (Hackaday’s project report).

What to check when evaluating an FPGA handheld project
For Gameslab or a similar project, separate the handheld platform from the FPGA core you are interested in. A platform can provide the programmable hardware without a complete implementation of a specific console or game.
