If your game-launcher password may have appeared in a data breach, treat it as unsafe: change it through the launcher’s official app or website, change it anywhere you reused it, secure the email account used for recovery, and turn on multifactor authentication (MFA). Then review devices, sessions, linked accounts, and purchases. A breach warning alone does not prove anyone accessed your game account, but acting promptly can limit what an exposed password enables.

What should I do first if my game password may have leaked?

Start from the launcher’s official app or type its official web address yourself; do not use a login or reset link in an unexpected message. Secure the email account tied to the game account, then replace the launcher password and any reused copies. After that, enable MFA, end sessions where possible, and check account activity.

  1. Verify the notice safely. Open the launcher directly rather than clicking a link in an email, text, social post, or pop-up. Steam advises users to stick to official Steam websites and disregard suspicious sites requesting login details. A message may be genuine or fake; you do not need to decide from its links before taking the safe route.
  2. Secure the recovery email account. Change its password to a unique one and enable MFA. Access to that inbox can be essential for resetting the launcher password, and Steam warns that a compromised email account can let an attacker regain control after a launcher password change.
  3. Change the launcher password. Sign in through the official app or site and use the account’s security or password settings. Choose a password you have not used on any other service. Steam’s official account-security guidance explicitly says to change the Steam account password.
  4. Replace every reused password. If you used the same password—or a close variation—on another launcher, email, shopping, social, or financial account, change it there too. The FTC recommends changing a breached password anywhere it was reused. Give each account its own password.
  5. Turn on MFA for both accounts. Enable it on the launcher and on the recovery email account. Online-gaming guidance from the Australian Cyber Security Centre recommends MFA and says an authenticator app can be used where possible.
  6. End access that may already exist. Review authorized devices and active sessions, and use “Sign out everywhere” or the service’s equivalent if available. Steam specifically recommends reviewing authorized devices and using Sign out everywhere if something looks wrong.
  7. Review account activity. Look for unfamiliar sign-ins, changes to the email address or username, unknown linked accounts, purchases, gifts, inventory changes, and messages you did not send. Keep suspicious emails and transaction records before deleting anything; they may help with a support or payment dispute.
  8. Assess the device you use to sign in. If malware or credential theft is plausible, scan for viruses, keyloggers, spyware, malicious applications, and suspicious browser extensions. Steam’s guidance recommends scanning the computer. If you suspect an infostealer, use a known-clean device for account recovery where practical.

If you can still access the account, do not wait for proof of a login before changing the exposed password. If you cannot access it, move to the official recovery process rather than responding to an unsolicited person or link claiming to help.

Does a breach warning mean someone got into my game account?

No. A warning that a password may have been exposed does not, by itself, establish that anyone logged in to your launcher account. It does mean the password should be treated as unsafe, particularly if you reused it elsewhere.

After changing the password, look for signs of an actual takeover: security notifications you did not trigger, changed account details, unfamiliar devices or sessions, purchases you did not make, missing items, or messages sent from your account without your knowledge. A warning without those signs is different from evidence of unauthorized access, but the response still begins with replacing the exposed credential. Check the platform’s own account activity and alerts rather than relying only on the breach notice.

What should I check after changing the password?

A password reset addresses the credential, but it does not tell you whether someone changed account settings, added a linked account, or made a purchase. Review the account’s security and activity areas, and preserve evidence of anything unfamiliar.

  • Sign-in and device records: Review recent sign-ins, authorized devices, and active sessions. Remove unfamiliar access and end other sessions if the platform offers that option.
  • Account details: Confirm that the recovery email, username, phone number, and other security details are still yours. Look for unexpected changes or recovery notices.
  • Linked accounts: Inspect connected console, social, or other external accounts. Remove connections you do not recognize, using the platform’s official settings and recovery guidance.
  • Transactions and game assets: Check purchase history, gifts, payment activity, and inventory for items or activity you cannot explain. Save transaction records and related security emails before contacting support.
  • Messages and notifications: Check for messages you did not send and security alerts you did not initiate. Treat unexpected support messages cautiously, even if they refer to a real account event.

If you find unauthorized purchases or account changes, contact the launcher through its official support portal and follow its recovery instructions. Where a payment method may have been misused, contact the payment provider using its official channel as well. Keep the records; do not send a password to anyone claiming to be support.

What if I can no longer access the launcher account?

Use the service’s official recovery process, and secure the email account first if you can still access it. If the account’s email, password, or phone number has been changed, do not assume recovery is impossible: both Epic Games and Steam provide guidance for compromised accounts, including recovery when access details have changed.

  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

If the recovery email still works

Change that email password, enable MFA, and then begin the launcher’s official password reset or account-recovery flow. Check that recovery messages come from the real service by navigating to its site or app yourself. Do not share a verification code or password with a person who contacts you unexpectedly.

If the launcher email was changed or the reset does not work

Submit the platform’s official recovery request and provide the information it asks for. Epic’s guidance includes using a linked external account—such as PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Facebook, or Google—where available, and submitting a recovery request if the account email was changed. Steam says its recovery remains available even if an attacker changed the email, password, and phone number. These steps are platform-specific; use the current instructions on the official help page rather than relying on old menu labels.

If you suspect the computer or phone is compromised

Do not enter replacement credentials on a device that may be capturing them. Scan it for malware and suspicious apps or browser extensions, or use a known-clean device for email and launcher recovery where practical. A scan can help identify a problem, but it does not guarantee that a device is clean or that an account will be recovered.

How do Steam and Epic Games handle a possible compromise?

Both platforms publish account-security guidance, but their exact menus and recovery steps can change. Use the official support channel for the account in question; the points below describe the guidance, not a promise that every account will show the same controls.

Platform Published guidance relevant to recovery What to do
Steam Steam recommends changing the account password, securing associated email accounts, reviewing authorized devices, signing out everywhere when something looks wrong, monitoring email notifications, and scanning for malware. Its stolen-account guidance says to scan the computer and change the email password before recovering the Steam account. Follow Steam Support’s current account-security and stolen-account instructions. Use official Steam pages and do not give a password to someone posing as a support representative; Steam says its representatives will not ask for it.
Epic Games Epic says it checks accounts for signs of compromise and may require a password reset. Its recovery guidance begins with securing the email account, then resetting the Epic password; linked external accounts may help with access. Follow Epic’s current account-security and account-recovery instructions. If you cannot access the account or its email has changed, use the official recovery request process.

For PlayStation, Xbox, EA, Ubisoft, Battle.net, Riot, and other launchers, interface labels and available controls differ. The same core response applies: secure the email, replace the launcher password with a unique one, enable MFA, revoke sessions or devices where available, check account and payment activity, and use the official recovery process if locked out. Look up the platform’s current help page instead of following a menu path from an old guide.

How can I avoid phishing while fixing the account?

A breach scare can create an opening for fake reset pages and impersonated support. Navigate to the launcher yourself, and do not hand over your credentials or verification codes to someone who contacts you.

  • Do not click login or reset links in unexpected messages. Open the official app or type the official domain yourself.
  • Do not give your password to a supposed support representative. Steam says its representatives will not ask for it.
  • Avoid external “free game,” virtual-currency, giveaway, or account-recovery pages that ask you to sign in. Epic warns about suspicious offers and external sites requesting login details.
  • Do not reuse the replacement password on another service, even if the old password was used only once or on a seemingly unimportant account.
  • Keep suspicious messages and transaction records if you need to report unauthorized activity; do not follow embedded links to “verify” them.

Do I need credit monitoring or a fraud alert?

Usually not for a password-only exposure. If the notice says Social Security numbers, payment information, or other identity data was involved, use any monitoring or identity-theft insurance offered by the affected organization, review your credit reports, and consider a fraud alert or credit freeze. The FTC’s breach guidance supports these steps when the exposed data warrants them; do not assume they are necessary just because a game password may have leaked.

What password and MFA choices make sense after a breach?

Use a distinct password for each account and enable MFA on both the launcher and the email account that controls recovery. A password manager is one way to generate and store unique passwords, while an authenticator app is an MFA option identified in online-gaming security guidance. The cited guidance supports MFA generally; it does not establish a particular product or model as necessary.

Protect the recovery routes as carefully as the game login. If an email account or linked external account can be used to regain access, secure those accounts as well and review their sign-in activity. A new launcher password cannot protect an account if the recovery email remains accessible with a reused or exposed password.

How should I judge the risk and choose the next action?

Use four questions to decide whether the response needs to go beyond changing passwords: Is there evidence of a takeover? Was the password reused? Can you still access the recovery email and launcher? Could the device itself be stealing credentials? If identity or payment data was exposed, that adds a separate financial-protection response.

What you know Priority
You received a breach warning but see no signs of account access. Change the exposed password, replace reused copies, secure email, enable MFA, and review sessions and account activity.
You see unfamiliar devices, changed details, purchases, or messages. Secure email and launcher access immediately, end unknown sessions, preserve evidence, and contact official support. Contact the payment provider if payment activity is unauthorized.
You are locked out, or the recovery email or phone was changed. Secure the email if possible and submit the launcher’s official recovery request. Use linked-account recovery only if the platform offers it.
You suspect a keylogger, infostealer, or malicious extension. Use a known-clean device for recovery where practical, and scan the affected device before entering new credentials there.
The breach notice includes identity or financial information. Follow the organization’s breach instructions, review credit reports, and consider a fraud alert or credit freeze in addition to securing accounts.

None of these steps guarantees prevention or recovery. They address different parts of the risk: the password, other accounts that may share it, access already established, the device used to log in, and any sensitive data beyond the game credential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use a breach-checking website to see whether my password was leaked?

You can act on a credible warning without entering your current password into a third-party lookup. Use the launcher’s and your email provider’s own security notices and account activity, and never submit a password to a site reached through an unsolicited message.

Can I keep playing while I sort out a possible password leak?

If you can safely access the official app, secure the account before continuing. If you suspect malware on the device, avoid signing in there until you have assessed it or can switch to a known-clean device.

Should I delete the breach email after I change my password?

Keep a copy if it contains useful details about the notice or if you may need to report suspicious activity. Do not use its links to sign in; independently open the official service.

What if I only used the leaked password on an old game account?

If that password was also used elsewhere, those other accounts remain relevant even if the old game account is inactive. Replace the reused password on any account you still use, starting with email and accounts that can reset other passwords.
