A game companion site earns credibility by making each factual claim traceable, testable where necessary, and tied to the game version it describes. If evidence is missing or inconclusive, the responsible choice is to qualify the claim, label it as unconfirmed, or leave it out—not to present a guess as a fact.

Start with claims that can be checked

Break paragraphs into individual statements readers could verify: a weapon’s damage, a quest’s trigger, an item’s cost, a drop rate, a compatibility note, or whether a mechanic changed in a patch. Each material statement should have evidence appropriate to that claim. A citation at the bottom of an article is not enough if readers cannot tell which source supports which fact.

The Games Wiki’s published method asks editors to identify what establishes a claim, such as the current game client, official documentation or release notes, a reproducible test, or corroboration from independent reproducible sources. Its standard is direct: “If none of those four are available, we either rewrite the claim to something we can defend or drop it.” The Games Wiki’s “How We Research” was last updated April 29, 2026. This is a stated editorial policy, not an independent audit of how consistently the site follows it.

Choose evidence that fits the gameplay claim

Prefer evidence close to the game and the fact being described. The current client may show a displayed stat or quest condition; official patch notes may establish when a change was announced; source code or developer documentation may clarify an implementation detail. The best authority depends on the question and the game.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Use the current game UI or in-game records for information the client directly exposes, while recording the build or version checked.
  • Use official documentation, patch notes, developer communications, or support material for rules and changes those sources actually address.
  • Use secondary guides, videos, and community discussions to find leads or corroborate a claim, but do not treat repetition across posts as proof.
  • For technical or hidden behavior, identify the relevant source path, commit, or other evidence when available rather than implying that a data tool verifies its own output.

OpenFront Intel’s Editorial Policy, last updated July 13, 2026, names official source code, release notes, and reproducible checks in the current client for its subject. It also cautions that “A copied value is not the finished editorial product”: a page should add context, assumptions, consequences, version limits, and links where practical. Those are the site’s published standards, not a third-party assessment of its accuracy.

Keep a claim ledger while you work

A practical way to prevent unsupported sentences is to maintain a claim ledger for every guide. Put each material statement in its own row or note, then record the evidence type, source link or location, game version, date checked, and confidence. Mark whether the statement is a direct observation, documented rule, calculation, inference, community report, or advice. This makes it harder for a citation to drift away from the sentence it is meant to support.

For a quest walkthrough, separate the unlock condition, required items, objective sequence, reward, failure state, and known platform differences. For a build guide, separate displayed stats from calculated damage, assumptions about buffs, and recommendations about play style. Small units expose exactly which part needs another check when a patch changes one value.

Describe tests so another person could repeat them

Reading a source and testing a mechanic are different kinds of evidence. If a page says an editor tested a behavior, keep a record that makes the test meaningful: game build, relevant setup, variables changed, number of repetitions, and what happened. The Games Wiki describes controlled experiments that use screenshots, change one variable at a time, and repeat observations.

For example, a claim that an enemy drops an item should identify the location, difficulty, character or account conditions, number of kills, and whether the item appeared in every observed run or only some. A claim about an interaction should state the two objects involved, timing, mode, platform, and any settings that could affect it. Screenshots or clips can preserve what was observed, but they do not establish behavior outside the tested conditions.

If a result does not reproduce, do not promote it to settled fact. Label it as an unconfirmed report, explain the limits of the observation, or omit it. A test can support a claim only within the conditions actually checked; it does not automatically establish how the mechanic works in every mode, platform, or version.

Separate facts from calculations, inferences, and advice

Readers should be able to tell whether a page is reporting a documented rule, an observed result, a calculation, an inference, a community report, or an editor’s recommendation. State assumptions beside calculations and avoid false precision when the underlying formula or rate is not established. If a result depends on unknown inputs, describe the dependency or give a qualified range rather than a single authoritative-looking number.

A calculator can correctly apply the formula you entered and still produce a misleading answer if the formula, base value, rounding rule, or patch version is wrong. Show the inputs, units, rounding, and exclusions. If a damage estimate ignores armor, latency, critical-hit rules, or an undocumented modifier, say so. Use “under these assumptions” instead of presenting the output as an in-game guarantee.

Automation and extracted data can help organize information, but they do not independently validate it. A tool’s output still needs a clear account of its source and limitations. OpenFront Intel’s policy calls for context and assumptions around copied values; that principle applies equally to calculators, databases, and other companion features.

Put version and review information beside changeable facts

Patch-sensitive mechanics need a version or factual review date close to the relevant information. A page-wide date is useful only if it describes an actual check of the claims on that page. When a patch arrives, identify which pages may be affected and recheck those claims; a new release is a reason to investigate, not proof that every old statement is now false.

Make it clear when a page has not been checked against the newest release. The Games Wiki describes one site-specific cadence: same-day patch summaries, critical affected pages within 72 hours, and secondary pages within two weeks. It also says relevant version-sensitive numbers carry a visible patch version and old values move to public revision history. That schedule is an example, not a universal standard; a site should publish a timetable it can meet and state any limits plainly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a release queue rather than relying on memory. Tag pages by affected systems—combat, quests, economy, items, compatibility—and send each tag to a reviewer after an upstream release. If only the console version changed, do not silently rewrite PC guidance; record which platform and build were checked. If a page has not yet been reviewed, display that status instead of implying that its old date reflects the current client.

Make corrections visible and auditable

A useful correction process lets readers point to the exact page and disputed claim, identify the applicable game version, and provide supporting evidence. Keep revision history so significant factual changes can be distinguished from copy or layout edits. When a material claim changes, explain what changed and why, and update its factual review date or add a correction note.

A correction form can ask for the page URL, quoted claim, platform and version, reproduction steps, links or screenshots, and the reporter’s contact preference. Editors should acknowledge uncertainty rather than promise acceptance. Preserve the prior wording in history even when the live page is corrected, so readers can see whether the change was a typo, a new patch value, or a conclusion that could not be reproduced.

This lets readers judge not only the current wording but also how the site responds when evidence changes. Represent uncertainty without turning it into a guess

If no clear public source establishes a feature or data flow, say that it is not established by the available evidence. Missing documentation does not prove that a feature is absent, safe, or handled in a particular way. Likewise, conflicting reports should remain visibly disputed until stronger evidence resolves them.

Use labels with precise meanings: “documented” for an official statement, “observed” for a described test, “reported” for a community account, “calculated” for a transparent derivation, and “unconfirmed” when reproduction or authority is lacking. Do not upgrade a claim merely because many posts repeat it. Conversely, do not call a feature impossible just because no public note mentions it.

One site-specific data page, Companions.wiki, reports 14 entries, 102 structured material claims, 42 source records, and 96 claims with an identified supporting source; it also reports 94% claim-citation coverage and cautions that coverage is not evidence strength. The figures are displayed by that site, with no year stated in the search excerpt, and the page was not directly accessible during the search that recorded them. They are not a general measure of truthfulness, error rates, or reader trust.

How to assess a companion site’s editorial method

These checks help compare editorial systems without pretending to score their accuracy from policy statements alone:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Are claims linked to primary evidence where appropriate, rather than only to other guides?
  • Do patch-sensitive facts show a game version or actual verification date?
  • Are tests reproducible and disclosed with their conditions?
  • Are unknowns and disagreements labeled rather than silently resolved by guesswork?
  • Can readers inspect revision history and distinguish factual corrections from routine edits?
  • Are advertising or affiliate relationships disclosed and kept separate from source selection and editorial conclusions?

Proximity to primary evidence is only one axis. Also examine whether a page shows its evidence type, whether calculations expose assumptions, whether a disagreement remains visible, and whether the site can explain what happened after a patch. A polished layout or a large database does not answer those questions.

Published policies can explain a site’s intended standards, but they do not by themselves establish that those standards are consistently followed. The sources described here provide examples of methods, not an independent study showing that any particular practice causes fewer errors or greater reader trust.

Common ways a guide starts lying without meaning to

One failure is citation decoration: adding a general link to an article while leaving individual numbers unsupported. Another is version laundering, where an old value remains live after a patch because the page’s generic “updated” date was changed for a spelling edit. A third is test inflation, where one successful observation becomes a universal rule. Repetition can create the same illusion when a community rumor is copied across guides.

Other failures come from mixing categories. An editor’s preferred build can be written as though it were an optimal result; a calculator’s estimate can be described as an in-game stat; or an absent note can be treated as proof that a feature does not exist. A claim ledger, evidence labels, and visible assumptions address these problems before they reach readers.

A lightweight operating checklist

  1. List the guide’s material claims as separate, checkable sentences.
  2. Assign the closest suitable authority: current client, official material, source code, reproducible test, or independent corroboration.
  3. Record version, platform, source location, test conditions, repetitions, and limitations.
  4. Label each statement as fact, observation, calculation, inference, report, or advice.
  5. Publish only what the evidence supports; narrow or remove the rest.
  6. Queue affected pages after releases and show the actual verification date.
  7. Keep revision history and explain material corrections.
  8. Invite reports that include the page, disputed wording, version, and evidence.

This process does not guarantee perfect information. It gives readers a way to see what is known, how it was established, and where uncertainty remains.

What the method does—and does not—require

Editorial accuracy does not depend on buying a particular reference book, notebook, storage device, computer, or gaming accessory. The material reviewed here did not establish a product that is necessary for verification, nor a specific hosting service or affiliate program that should be recommended. The essential resources are disciplined records, access to the relevant client or official material, time for reproducible checks, and a correction path readers can use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know whether a game guide is trustworthy?

Check whether important claims identify their source, game version, evidence type, and review date. Look for reproducible test conditions, visible uncertainty, and a revision history. A published policy shows intended standards, not proof that every page follows them.

Is an official patch note always enough to verify a mechanic?

Only for the change or rule the note actually addresses. Confirm what the current client shows, and test hidden or disputed behavior when necessary. Do not use a patch note to support unrelated values or assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should a guide say when community reports conflict?

Keep the disagreement visible, identify the versions and conditions reported, and label the behavior unconfirmed until stronger documentation or a reproducible test resolves it.

How many test runs prove a drop rate?

No universal number is established here. Record the number of repetitions and observed outcomes, avoid false precision, and describe the result as an observation unless the game or a reliable source establishes the underlying rate.

Should every page show a last-updated date?

Yes, but the date should describe an actual factual review. For version-sensitive claims, show the game build or patch beside the relevant value and disclose when the newest release has not yet been checked.

What information should I include in an error report?

Provide the page URL, the exact disputed claim, platform and game version, reproduction steps or test conditions, and supporting links, screenshots, or clips. This gives an editor enough context to investigate rather than guess.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a high citation percentage prove a site is accurate?

No. Companions.wiki reports 94% claim-citation coverage alongside its own counts, but citation coverage is not evidence strength and is not a general measure of truthfulness or reader trust.

Can a data extractor or calculator verify its own output?

No. Extracted values and calculations still require a source, version, assumptions, and limitations. Automation organizes evidence; it does not independently establish that the evidence or formula is correct.

The Bottom Line

A companion site avoids misleading readers by treating every material statement as a claim to verify, version, label, and revisit. When evidence cannot support a sentence, narrowing it—or leaving it out—is more useful than confident speculation.
