Short answer: Galaxy Z Fold8 has an IP48 rating for everyday spills and rain, but it is not waterproof for deliberate underwater use. It does not support Samsung S Pen input. Samsung lists Fold8-specific Carbon Magnet, Carbon Standing, and Silicone Magnet cases, and promises seven generations of Android/One UI upgrades plus seven years of security updates from the phone’s initial global launch.

Is Galaxy Z Fold8 waterproof?
Galaxy Z Fold8 is water-resistant, not waterproof. Samsung gives it an IP48 rating and describes that protection as suitable for accidental spills and ordinary daily mishaps. The rating should make a splash, a brief rain shower, or a knocked-over drink less alarming, but it is not an invitation to use the phone underwater.
What the IP48 test actually covers
Samsung’s product disclaimer defines its water-resistance test as submersion in up to 1.5 metres of freshwater for up to 30 minutes. That is a controlled laboratory condition, not a guarantee that every real-world incident will have the same result. The test also concerns freshwater; it does not establish equivalent protection in salt water, chlorinated pools, soapy water, drinks, or other liquids.

Samsung warns that water resistance is not permanent and may diminish through normal wear. Folding phones have moving hinge assemblies and seals that experience repeated opening, closing, drops, pressure, and exposure to debris. A phone that survived an earlier splash should not be treated as having an unchanged protection level years later.

What to do after a spill
- Move Fold8 away from the liquid and close it normally if doing so does not require force.
- Wipe the exterior with a soft, lint-free cloth. Pay particular attention to the USB-C area, microphones, speakers, and hinge surroundings.
- Keep the phone out of chargers and wired accessories until the exterior and port are dry. Do not insert objects into the port to accelerate drying.
- If the liquid was salt water, pool water, detergent, a sugary drink, or another substance besides clean freshwater, arrange professional inspection rather than relying on the IP rating.
Do not deliberately film underwater, rinse Fold8 under a tap, use it in a shower, or assume that a case makes it suitable for swimming. Water resistance also does not mean the hinge can tolerate grit or liquid forced into a moving joint.
Does Galaxy Z Fold8 work with S Pen?
No. Samsung’s official FAQ says, “No, Galaxy Z Fold8 does not support S Pen.” That means an S Pen should not be presented as a compatible input accessory for this model, and an S Pen-specific buying decision should rule Fold8 out.
What this means in daily use
Fold8’s large inner display remains usable with touch input, including taps, swipes, typing, and other finger-driven interactions. However, the model does not provide the S Pen functionality associated with compatible Galaxy devices. Buying an S Pen separately will not add the supported digitizer features that the phone lacks.

If handwriting or drawing is essential
Decide on stylus support before choosing the phone rather than after purchasing accessories. For a Fold8 owner, plan workflows around touch input or another input method that the specific application and phone recognize as ordinary touch. Do not buy a case with an S Pen holder on the assumption that storage space creates compatibility.
What is the best case for Galaxy Z Fold8?
The best case is one explicitly labelled for Galaxy Z Fold8 and matched to the way you charge and carry the phone. Samsung says Fold8 works best with official accessories such as its magnet cases. Its built-in magnetic ring is designed to align with compatible wireless chargers and magnetic accessories.

- Check whether the case covers the hinge, separates into front and rear pieces, or adds a stand; these design choices affect pocketability and opening clearance.

- After installation, open and close the phone slowly. Look for pressure on the inner screen, obstruction at the hinge, or a case edge that prevents the phone from reaching its intended fully open or fully closed positions.
Magnetic accessories and charging
The magnetic ring is an alignment feature, not a universal guarantee that every magnetic mount or charger is safe or optimised. Confirm the accessory’s compatibility, observe whether the phone remains centred during charging, and check for excess heat. If charging starts and stops, remove the case and test the phone and charger separately before blaming the battery.

How many years of updates does Galaxy Z Fold8 get?
Samsung’s current policy gives Galaxy Z Fold8 seven generations of operating-system upgrades and seven years of security updates, measured from the initial global launch date. This is a policy duration, not a promise that every country, carrier, or device variant receives each release on the same day.
Operating-system upgrades versus security updates
- Seven generations of OS upgrades: major Android and Samsung software-platform releases covered by the device policy.
- Seven years of security updates: security maintenance over the stated support period. Individual patches can arrive on different schedules from major OS releases.
The two clocks begin at the initial global launch date. A later purchase does not reset the seven-year period, so the launch timing matters when estimating how much support remains.

Check for an update on the phone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update.
- Select Download and install.
- Read the listed build number, Android version, security-patch date, and installation notes before confirming.
If no update appears, check the exact model number and carrier version, connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network, charge the battery, and try again later. A delayed listing does not by itself mean the device has lost support; rollout timing can vary by market and provider.
Ownership details that affect expectations
Samsung lists Galaxy Z Fold8 at 201 grams. The unfolded main display measures 7.6 inches. Listed thickness is 4.5 mm unfolded and 9.7 mm folded. Samsung also lists a 4,800 mAh battery and claims up to 26 hours of video playback. The playback figure is an official product-page claim; actual endurance depends on brightness, connectivity, apps, temperature, and other settings.

Samsung says the hinge is designed for fully open and fully closed positions. Galaxy Z Fold8 therefore does not support FlexMode, so do not buy it expecting the partially folded interface behaviour associated with foldables that are designed to hold an intermediate angle.

Specifications that look similar on a product page can lead to different ownership experiences. Compare these factors side by side:

Fix: Fold8 does not support S Pen. A storage slot or accessory claim cannot change the phone’s input hardware.
