Choose a Galaxy Z Fold if you want a book-style phone that opens into a larger screen for multitasking and viewing. Choose a Galaxy Z Flip if you care more about folding your phone into a compact clamshell for carrying and quick everyday use. Samsung’s current US lineup, as of October 4, 2026, includes the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8, and Galaxy Z Flip8.
Which Galaxy foldable should you choose?
- Pick the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra if its 8.0-inch inner display is the main reason you want a foldable and you expect to use the larger canvas for multitasking or viewing.
- Consider the Galaxy Z Fold8 if you want a book-style Fold but do not need the Ultra’s largest screen. Its main display is 7.6 inches.
- Pick the Galaxy Z Flip8 if a phone that folds down compactly matters more to you than a tablet-like inner screen. Samsung lists a 6.9-inch main display, a 4.1-inch cover display, and a weight of 180 g.
These recommendations follow Samsung’s published specifications and product positioning; they are not conclusions from hands-on testing. Which screen you expect to use most often is a more useful guide than the Fold or Flip name alone.

What is the difference between a Fold and a Flip?
Galaxy Z Fold: a book-style design
The Fold opens like a book, giving you a larger inner display than the Flip. Samsung positions the Fold8 Ultra for multitaskers and power users, and the standard Fold8 for content and entertainment. The Ultra has an 8.0-inch main display and a 6.5-inch cover display; the standard Fold8 has a 7.6-inch main display and a 5.5-inch cover display. Samsung’s current US Galaxy foldables guide lists these display sizes and model descriptions.
Galaxy Z Flip: a clamshell design
The Flip folds down into a clamshell shape. Its 6.9-inch main display is smaller than either Fold’s, while the 4.1-inch cover display provides a compact surface when the phone is folded. Samsung positions Flip8 around creators and everyday convenience. The compact folded form and FlexCam/cover-screen features are the reasons to consider it over a Fold, not access to the largest inner screen. Samsung’s US guide lists the display sizes and positioning.

How do the current models compare?
Samsung introduced the eighth-generation Galaxy Z line in July 2026, comprising Fold8 Ultra, Fold8, and Flip8. The following are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent measurements of comfort, battery life, or camera quality. Samsung Newsroom’s July 2026 launch coverage announced the lineup.
| Model | Design | Main display | Cover display | Weight | Battery capacity | Rear cameras listed by Samsung |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra | Book-style | 8.0 inches | 6.5 inches | 215 g | 5,000 mAh | 200 MP wide, 50 MP ultra-wide, 10 MP telephoto |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 | Book-style | 7.6 inches | 5.5 inches | 201 g | 4,800 mAh | 50 MP wide, 50 MP ultra-wide |
| Galaxy Z Flip8 | Clamshell | 6.9 inches | 4.1 inches | 180 g | 4,300 mAh | 50 MP wide, 12 MP ultra-wide |
Specifications in the table are Samsung’s published US figures for the 2026 models. The camera entries describe listed hardware only; they do not establish which phone takes better photos. Samsung’s regional comparison also describes Fold8 Ultra as having a triple-camera configuration and Flip8 as having a dual-camera configuration. What do screen size, weight, and battery capacity mean in practice?
Screen size reflects different priorities
The Fold8 Ultra has the largest listed main display, followed by the standard Fold8, then the Flip8. That distinction matters if a wide work or entertainment canvas is central to your choice. It does not by itself establish how an app will behave, how comfortable the phone will be to hold, or which screen you will use most in daily life.

Weight is a specification, not a comfort verdict
Samsung lists Flip8 at 180 g, Fold8 at 201 g, and Fold8 Ultra at 215 g. The Flip8 is the lightest of these three published figures, but weight alone cannot predict how comfortable a phone will feel in your hand or pocket.
Battery capacity is not battery life
The listed battery capacities are 5,000 mAh for Fold8 Ultra, 4,800 mAh for Fold8, and 4,300 mAh for Flip8. Capacity is not a real-world battery-life result: it cannot tell you how long a model will last under your mix of screen use, apps, and connectivity.

Samsung lists three rear cameras for Fold8 Ultra, two for Fold8, and two for Flip8, with the megapixel ratings shown in the comparison table. Those specifications help distinguish the hardware configurations, but they do not show comparative image quality. The available manufacturer information does not establish which model produces better photos in everyday conditions.
What is not established by these specifications?
Samsung’s published lineup information does not provide independent evidence about long-term hinge durability, crease visibility in ordinary use, repair costs, real-world battery life, or comparative photo quality. No hands-on comparison is available here, so treat those as questions to investigate through appropriate independent testing or hands-on evaluation rather than inferring answers from the listed specifications.
Current prices, trade-in offers, storage options, colors, carrier deals, retailer stock, warranty terms, and accessory compatibility vary by country and date. No current US price or inventory figure is established here; check Samsung or a retailer in your market before buying. Do not assume a case or screen protector fits across models.
