Yes, the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra can replace a laptop for some people—but only when the Android apps and workflows they rely on are supported. With its included S Pen, large screen and Samsung DeX, it suits email, web work, video calls, documents and handwritten notes. It is not a Windows or macOS computer, so specialized software and demanding desktop workflows may still require a laptop.

Samsung announced the tablet on September 30, 2026. Its U.S. launch announcement lists a starting price of $1,399.99 and availability beginning October 7, 2026; those details apply to the U.S. announcement, not every market. A keyboard, case and any paid software also affect the cost and carry setup.

What the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra gives you

A large screen and included pen

Samsung specifies a 14.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 2960 × 1848 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, and includes an S Pen. That combination is well suited to handwriting, annotating documents, sketching and touch-first use. Samsung also says Multi Window can divide the screen into up to three sections, which can help with tasks such as taking notes while viewing other content. These are manufacturer-described features, not independent tests of a particular work routine.

A tablet you can use on its own

Samsung lists the Wi-Fi model at 692g and 5.1mm thick. Those figures describe the tablet, not a complete laptop-style setup. Add the keyboard and case you need before comparing how much you will carry.

Creative and media uses

Samsung says Photoshop is pre-loaded on the S12 series and includes four months of access to the mobile plan. Its UK product information also describes Notability and Clip Studio Paint. App availability, subscription terms and feature sets can vary by region and plan; check that the mobile version supports the work you need before treating it as a replacement for desktop software.

Samsung specifies an 11,600mAh battery and claims up to 23 hours of video playback. It also says a 45W adapter takes about 95 minutes to fully charge the tablet. The 23-hour figure is a manufacturer video-playback claim, not a measured estimate for a day of mixed work.

What you give up compared with a laptop

Windows and macOS applications

The S12 Ultra runs Android, so the key question is whether every essential app has an Android version with the features you need. Samsung’s FAQ notes that a laptop may still be necessary for some specialized software. Check apps, plug-ins, file handling and workplace systems individually; the existence of an Android app does not guarantee feature parity with its desktop counterpart.

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 tablet guidance likewise identifies Android app versions and DeX or keyboard limitations as possible barriers to a complete laptop replacement. That editorial view is useful context, but it cannot establish whether a particular person’s workflow will work.

Keyboard and pointing setup

A keyboard can make longer writing and spreadsheet-style work more practical. Samsung lists a Pro Keyboard with a trackpad and a Book Cover Keyboard Slim, but its UK product listing treats both as separately sold accessories. A keyboard adds cost and changes the weight and convenience of the setup; decide whether you need a trackpad, a protective cover or both.

Price of the complete setup

The U.S. launch announcement gives a starting price of $1,399.99 for the tablet. Before comparing that with a laptop, add the keyboard and case you need, any connectivity option and recurring software costs. Samsung’s announcement also listed a limited-time 30% keyboard discount with device purchase; it is a promotion, not a standing price, so confirm eligibility and current terms before relying on it.

How to decide whether it can replace your laptop

  1. List your must-have apps. Verify that each has an Android version and that it supports the specific features, plug-ins and file formats your work requires.
  2. Match the device to your work rhythm. The S Pen and touch screen favor handwriting, drawing, reading and annotation. Frequent typing or pointer-heavy work may call for a keyboard and trackpad.
  3. Check your full workflow in Android and DeX. Consider file management, peripherals, workplace systems and any specialized tools—not just whether the main app opens.
  4. Compare complete carry weight. Weigh the tablet with the keyboard, cover, charger and other gear you would actually carry against your laptop setup.
  5. Compare total ownership cost in your market. Use the local tablet price and include accessories and ongoing apps. Treat launch promotions and included software access as temporary unless current terms confirm otherwise.

What the published performance and support figures mean

Samsung claims the S12 Ultra has up to 61% faster NPU processing, 19% faster CPU performance and 17% improved GPU power than the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra. These are Samsung’s comparisons with its previous Ultra tablet, not laptop benchmarks. The reviewed material does not establish how the S12 Ultra performs against laptops in controlled app or mixed-use battery tests.

Verdict by type of work

  • Likely a good laptop alternative: email, browsing, video calls, documents, notes, reading, annotation and compatible creative apps—especially if your work benefits from pen input.
  • Test carefully before replacing a laptop: workflows that depend on a particular desktop app, plug-in, peripheral, file-handling feature or workplace system.
  • Keep a laptop in the plan: any essential task that cannot be done in the Android app or supported DeX workflow you need.
