The base Galaxy S26 is a modest refinement over the Galaxy S25, not an automatic upgrade. It brings a slightly larger display, a higher-rated battery capacity, a newer processor and additional AI features, but the base-camera hardware remains close—and a controlled battery test recorded shorter runtime for the S26. Whether it is worth paying more depends on the current price for matching storage, your region’s S26 chipset and the features you will actually use.
What changes between the Galaxy S26 and S25?
This comparison covers only the base models, not the Plus or Ultra. Samsung’s specifications below come from its UK comparison page, so chipset and product details can differ by market.
| Area | Galaxy S26 | Galaxy S25 | What the difference means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display | 6.3-inch FHD+ at 120Hz | 6.2-inch FHD+ at 120Hz | The S26 is slightly larger, while both remain in the same broad resolution and refresh-rate class. Samsung specifications: official UK comparison. |
| Typical battery capacity | 4,300mAh | 4,000mAh | The larger rated capacity does not establish longer real-world endurance. |
| Base camera hardware | 50MP wide camera; 3x optical zoom | 50MP wide camera; 3x optical zoom | The specifications do not point to a major hardware leap. Image processing and individual photo results may still differ. |
| Chipset | Exynos 2600 in the UK; varies by market | Snapdragon 8 Elite | Performance comparisons need to identify the S26 variant tested. Samsung’s regional product information is available on its Galaxy S25 specifications page. |
| Storage at reported US launch | 256GB base tier | 128GB base tier; 256GB also reported | Compare like-for-like storage rather than comparing the S26 base tier with the S25’s lower-capacity entry configuration. |
Is the S26’s battery actually better?
Not necessarily. Samsung lists typical capacity of 4,300mAh for the S26 and 4,000mAh for the S25, but capacity is not a runtime measurement. In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 test, each phone refreshed a webpage over 5G with its screen set to 150 nits. The S26 lasted 11 hours 28 minutes; the S25 lasted 11 hours 54 minutes. That result applies to that specific test, not every person’s daily use. Network conditions, screen brightness, workload, software and regional chipset can affect endurance.
Tom’s Guide also measured peak brightness of 1,950 nits on its S26 sample and 1,789 nits on its S25 sample. Those are the outlet’s measurements, not Samsung-rated brightness figures, and they should not be treated as a guarantee for every unit or viewing condition.

Are performance and software worth paying extra for?
Performance depends on which S26 you can buy
Samsung identifies the Exynos 2600 for the UK S26, while chipset availability varies by market. Tom’s Guide tested a Snapdragon S26 and reported higher Geekbench and 3DMark scores than for its tested S25. The outlet had not tested an international Exynos version, so those benchmark results do not establish how every regional S26 compares. If demanding games or other processor-heavy work matter, check the chipset in the exact regional model before deciding.
AI features may not stay exclusive
Samsung promotes AI Now Nudge and additional context-aware functions for the S26. Tom’s Guide notes that One UI updates may bring some features to the S25, but availability and timing depend on rollout. Treat the S26’s current software advantage as a feature-set difference at the time you buy, not as a guarantee that a specific function will remain exclusive indefinitely.

Is the S26 camera a meaningful upgrade?
The base models share the headline 50MP wide camera and 3x optical zoom specifications, so the S26 is not a clear hardware upgrade on those figures alone. Tom’s Guide found them broadly similar in daylight, with some differences in zoom and low-light samples. If camera performance is the deciding factor, compare photos taken in the conditions you care about; do not pay a large premium on the assumption that the S26 has a dramatic camera hardware advantage.
How much more does the S26 cost?
Tom’s Guide reported US launch prices of $899 for the S26 with 256GB and $859.99 for the S25 with 256GB. The S26 therefore launched $40 above that reported S25 256GB launch price, while the S25’s reported 128GB launch configuration cost $799. These are US launch-price snapshots, not current offers.

In a report dated October 1, 2026, Tom’s Guide said Samsung had raised the S26 256GB US list price from $899 to $999. Prices and promotions can change, so check current local pricing and trade-in offers before buying. The official Tom’s Guide price-update report covers the reported US increase.
- Buying new: Compare current prices for the same storage capacity. The S26’s base tier is 256GB; the S25 was also offered in a 128GB base configuration.
- Upgrading from an S25: Work out the net cost after trade-in, then ask whether the larger screen, regional processor or current S26 software features solve a specific need.
- Choosing mainly for the camera: The headline base-camera specifications are close; compare actual samples before paying a substantial premium.
- Choosing mainly for battery: Weigh the capacity figures against the independent test result and your own network, brightness and workload.
Will an S25 case fit the S26?
Do not assume it will. Tom’s Guide reports that the S26 is slightly larger and that S25 cases will not fit it. Buy a case explicitly marked for the Galaxy S26 and verify the exact model compatibility on the product listing. Samsung also says its recommended power adapter and data cable are sold separately for the S26; check the package contents for your market if you need either.

Who should pay more for the Galaxy S26?
Keep the S25 if you already own it
For most S25 owners, the S26’s changes are not compelling enough to justify an upgrade by themselves. Keep the S25 unless a particular S26 feature, processor variant or slightly larger screen matters to you and the net upgrade cost makes sense.
Consider the S26 if you are buying either phone new
The S26 may be the better fit if you want its larger display, need the processor available in your market or value its current software features. Compare live prices at equal storage and factor in any promotion or trade-in rather than relying on launch pricing.

Do not pay a premium for benefits that are not established
- A larger battery rating does not guarantee longer use between charges.
- The base S26 camera specifications do not show a dramatic hardware jump.
- A benchmark result from one Snapdragon S26 does not establish the performance of the UK Exynos model or every regional variant.
- An S25 case should not be treated as compatible with the S26.
