That is a result from one field test—not proof that the Pixel wins every night scene.
What happened in the direct low-light comparison?
CNET’s reviewer compared the phones at a car event and described a gallery of about 100 photos. In dim scenes, the reviewer said the Pixel 11 Pro repeatedly pulled ahead. Pixel shots were often immediate; the Galaxy S26 Ultra more frequently activated night mode and took three-second exposures, which sometimes resulted in blur. That difference matters most when you are shooting handheld and the subject or camera may move: a longer exposure gives motion more time to show up as blur. It does not mean every Galaxy night photo will be blurry or every Pixel photo will freeze movement. The accessible account does not provide all camera settings or sample images in text, so treat this as the reviewer’s field observation rather than a controlled measurement.
Why the result is not a universal verdict
Low-light performance depends on the scene, the camera module and zoom level, motion, exposure, and how each phone renders brightness and color. A separate reviewer who compared the Pixel 11 Pro XL—not the exact Pro model—with the S26 Ultra over several weeks found the phones broadly close in night photographs. The Pixel rendered one night streetscape brighter and warmer, while other scenes could favor Samsung. See the comparison.

That is useful context, but it is not direct evidence for the Pixel 11 Pro: the XL is a different model, and the reviewer’s overall finding also shows why a single scene or preferred rendering style cannot settle every comparison. Another comparison of the Pixel 11 Pro XL and S26 Ultra likewise described night-photo quality as close, with different scenes favoring different phones. Its model distinction matters when applying the result to the Pixel 11 Pro.
What the camera specifications do—and do not—tell you
Google says the Pixel 11 Pro’s redesigned 48-megapixel telephoto camera has 30% more light sensitivity than the previous generation. That is Google’s claim about its own product generation, not a Pixel-versus-Samsung test. Google’s separate 56% light-sensitivity claim applies to the Pixel 11 base model’s main sensor, not the Pro. Samsung says the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s 200-megapixel wide camera is 47% brighter and its 5x telephoto camera is 37% brighter than the corresponding cameras in the prior generation. Samsung also says wider apertures let more light reach the sensor and support clearer, more detailed low-light photos, including at zoom. Those are manufacturer comparisons and descriptions, not evidence that the S26 Ultra beats the Pixel in a head-to-head night-photo test. Samsung’s camera details.
Neither set of product claims replaces side-by-side photos taken under comparable conditions. The strongest evidence for this particular choice remains the direct field comparison’s observation about dim scenes and capture delay.

Which phone should you choose for night photos?
- Choose the Pixel 11 Pro if handheld low-light stills are your priority, especially candid shots where people or other subjects may move. The direct field comparison favored it in dim scenes and reported faster capture.
- Consider the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you prefer its rendering in your own sample comparisons or value its camera system for other uses. The available evidence does not show that it loses in every night scene.
- Compare the exact models and settings if zoom, a specific lens, or a particular kind of scene matters to you. Results from the Pixel 11 Pro XL should not be treated as a direct test of the Pixel 11 Pro.
The cited head-to-head evidence is about still photographs. Samsung advertises Nightography Video enhancements, and Google describes low-light camera upgrades, but those claims do not establish which phone records better night video.
