In Tom’s Guide’s sample tests, the iPhone showed an edge in some low-light photos and smoother video zooming, while the Galaxy produced a sharper 40x zoom image. Choose based on what you shoot most—and treat these as results from specific review samples, not a guarantee for every scene or software version.
How the cameras compare
Published comparisons point to different strengths rather than one phone winning every category. Tom’s Guide tested both models in several scenes, while PhoneArena published a side-by-side sample set covering main-camera photos, portraits, zoom, ultra-wide, and selfies. Results depend on the scene, framing, and the image rendering you prefer.
| Use | What the published comparisons found |
|---|---|
| Main camera in daylight | Tom’s Guide’s indoor Halloween-decorations sample gave the iPhone a slight sharpness edge; the Galaxy rendered more saturated colors. This is a single scene, not a general daylight verdict. Tom’s Guide |
| Low light | In Tom’s Guide’s near-dark flag example, the iPhone sample retained more detail, while the Galaxy sample looked blurry. The result applies to that sample. Tom’s Guide |
| Portraits and ultra-wide | PhoneArena’s comparison includes samples for both categories, but the supplied findings do not establish a universal winner for either. Compare its paired images for the rendering you prefer. PhoneArena |
| Moderate telephoto | At 10x in Tom’s Guide’s pumpkin sample, the reviewer described the phones as neck and neck. Tom’s Guide |
| Very long zoom | At 40x in the cited comparison, the iPhone struggled and the Galaxy’s image looked sharper. This is an extreme-zoom sample, not a claim about every zoom level. Tom’s Guide |
| Video | In one 4K/30 HDR comparison, Tom’s Guide preferred the iPhone’s detail and smoother zooming; the reviewer noted that the Galaxy zoomed in more strongly when framing very close. Tom’s Guide |
| Selfies | PhoneArena’s sample set includes selfies; the supplied comparison notes do not name a category winner. PhoneArena |
What the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s zoom labels mean
Samsung lists four rear cameras: a 50 MP ultra-wide, a 200 MP wide camera, a 50 MP telephoto, and a 10 MP telephoto. The telephotos provide 5x and 3x optical zoom, respectively. Samsung also describes 2x and 10x as “optical-quality” zoom enabled by the Adaptive Pixel sensor; those settings are not dedicated optical lenses. Samsung’s specifications and its launch specification table provide the camera figures.
The distinction matters when comparing reach: dedicated optical zoom comes from the telephoto cameras, optical-quality zoom uses Samsung’s sensor processing, and the 40x comparison above is a separate long-zoom result. A larger megapixel number alone does not tell you which phone will make the more pleasing or useful photo.

What is established about the iPhone 18 Pro Max camera
Tom’s Guide reports that the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s variable-aperture main camera can open to f/1.48 or stop down to f/4.0; its reviewer found the adjustment useful for changing light and depth-of-field behavior. That is reviewer-reported information, not a complete manufacturer specification sheet. Tom’s Guide’s comparison supplies current-generation camera observations.
Apple’s official technical sheet linked here is for the previous iPhone 17 Pro Max, not the 18 Pro Max. It lists 48 MP main, ultra-wide, and 4x telephoto cameras, 8x optical-quality zoom, and up to 40x digital zoom. Those figures are useful only as prior-generation context and should not be treated as iPhone 18 Pro Max specifications. Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max specifications.

Which phone should you choose?
Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if
- You prioritize the low-light detail and video behavior seen in Tom’s Guide’s cited examples.
- You prefer the iPhone’s rendering in the comparison images, including the slightly sharper Halloween-decorations sample.
- You value its reported variable-aperture control for adapting the main camera’s light and depth-of-field behavior.
Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra if
- You often frame distant subjects and want the stronger result in the cited 40x comparison.
- You want dedicated 3x and 5x telephoto cameras plus Samsung’s separately labeled 2x and 10x optical-quality zoom modes.
- You prefer the more saturated color in Tom’s Guide’s indoor decorations sample.
If portrait, ultra-wide, or selfie rendering will decide the purchase, inspect the paired images in PhoneArena’s sample comparison on a screen similar to the one you use for photos. Your preference for iOS or Android and the rest of your phone workflow can also matter, but that is a practical buying consideration rather than a camera test result.
