Galaxy AI translation usually fails for one of five reasons: the phone or app is not supported, a language pack is missing, Live Translate has no network or Samsung account connection, Interpreter cannot access the microphone, or speech is too noisy or overlapping. Update the phone and Interpreter first, then work through permissions, language downloads, connectivity, compatibility and audio checks in that order.
First, identify which translation feature is failing
Samsung uses two related tools. Interpreter handles face-to-face conversation on supported Galaxy phones and tablets. Live Translate translates calls in the Samsung Phone app and in selected third-party apps. Their requirements are not identical, so a fix that works for Interpreter may not fix a call.
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Most useful first action |
|---|---|---|
| Interpreter opens but does not hear speech | Microphone permission, microphone switch, microphone control or background noise | Allow microphone access, tap the microphone icon and test in a quiet room |
| A language is missing | Device support, region, language-pair availability or language pack | Check the supported-language list and download the pack shown in Interpreter |
| Live Translate is missing from a call | Unsupported device, app, language, region, network or Samsung account | Open the Live Translate settings and verify the app and both languages |
| Translation starts and then stops | Pending updates, lost connectivity, revoked permission or an Interpreter process error | Install updates, reconnect, restore permission and restart Interpreter |
| Words are recognized incorrectly | Accent, pronunciation, speaking volume, overlapping speakers or environmental noise | Use one speaker at a time, keep the microphone clear and move somewhere quieter |
1. Update Galaxy software and restart Interpreter
Samsung’s recommended first sequence is to install software updates, confirm microphone access and restart Interpreter. Apply updates in all three places that can contain the relevant fix:

- Open Settings > Software update and install any pending system update.
- Open the Galaxy Store, select Menu > Updates, and update Interpreter or any Galaxy AI component listed there.
- Update Samsung apps from the Galaxy Store or Google Play when an update is offered.
After updating, close Interpreter from the recent-apps screen, open it again and retry the same language pair. If the problem began immediately after an update, restart the phone before changing other settings; this reloads the speech and language services without deleting downloaded packs.

2. Restore microphone access
Interpreter cannot transcribe anything if Android has denied its microphone permission, if the system-wide microphone switch is off, or if recording has not been started inside the conversation view.
- Open Settings > Apps > Interpreter > Permissions.
- Tap Microphone and choose Allow only while using the app. Ask every time is also valid, but you must approve the prompt whenever Interpreter requests access.
- Pull down Quick Settings and make sure the device-wide Microphone toggle is enabled. Android can block microphone access globally even when the app permission looks correct.
- Return to Interpreter, select the two languages and tap the microphone icon beside the language that should listen. Speak only after the recording control indicates that capture has started.
If the permission is repeatedly reset, check whether a privacy, security or work-profile policy is disabling the microphone. Disconnect wired headsets or Bluetooth audio temporarily so the phone’s own microphone is the input being tested. Do not cover the microphone opening with a case, finger or screen protector.
3. Check the device, Android, One UI and region
Galaxy AI translation is not available on every Galaxy product. Samsung limits these features to select phones and tablets running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or later. A compatible-looking menu does not guarantee that every language or call app is enabled in your country.
- Check the installed versions under Settings > About phone (or About tablet) > Software information.
- Install the latest offered One UI update before concluding that the device is unsupported.
- Check Samsung’s current support information for your exact model, country or region and language pair. Samsung notes that some languages and regions are unavailable, and translation results may vary.
If Interpreter works but Live Translate is absent, that can be an app or feature-availability limitation rather than a microphone fault. Conversely, a language may appear in one feature but not another because the two tools do not expose identical language lists.

4. Install the required language packs
English and Spanish are preinstalled in Interpreter. Other supported languages require a free language-pack download. A language can therefore be supported in principle but unavailable on your phone until its pack is installed.
- Open Interpreter and open the language selector for each side of the conversation.
- Look for a download icon next to the language and download the pack over Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Wait for both sides of the pair to finish downloading. Keep enough free storage available and do not close the download screen prematurely.
- Retry the conversation after the pack shows as installed. If a pack will not download, reconnect to the internet, disable Airplane mode and repeat the update check.
For a Live Translate call, open Settings > Galaxy AI > Call assist > Live Translate, select the language you and the other caller will use, and download any pack displayed with a download icon. Samsung says Live Translate requires a network connection and a Samsung account, even when Interpreter can later conduct a conversation with downloaded packs offline.
5. Understand when Wi-Fi, mobile data and a Samsung account are required
Interpreter conversation mode
Interpreter can use downloaded language packs for offline conversation use. Downloading those packs still requires connectivity, and a language pair will not work offline if either required pack is missing. Offline operation also does not remove microphone, device-support or speech-quality requirements.
Live Translate calls
Live Translate calls require an active network connection and a signed-in Samsung account. Reconnect Wi-Fi or mobile data, turn off Airplane mode, and sign in under the Samsung account settings before testing again. A weak or interrupted connection can make the translation control disappear, delay results or stop an active call translation.

To isolate the cause, test once on a reliable Wi-Fi network and once on mobile data if available. If Interpreter works offline with installed packs but Live Translate fails on both networks, focus on account, app, region and device support rather than the microphone.
6. Verify Live Translate is enabled for the app you are calling
Live Translate is available through Samsung’s Phone dialer and listed apps that include WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Signal, Line, WeChat, Telegram, Meet and Kakao Talk. Availability can vary by language and region.
- Open Settings > Galaxy AI > Call assist > Live Translate.
- Choose both call languages and install any requested packs.
- Open Other apps in the Live Translate settings and confirm that the app you intend to use is listed and enabled.
- Start a new call from the supported app and look for the Live Translate control in the call interface.
If the control is missing in an app that is not listed under Other apps, the app is not currently supported on that device or in that region. Installing a newer version of the messaging app may help, but an unlisted app cannot be made compatible by changing microphone permissions.

Samsung cautions that recognition varies with pronunciation, voice level and the surrounding environment. Its documentation also states: “Not all accents, dialects, and expressions are recognized, and actual performance may vary depending on pronunciation, voice level, and the surrounding environment.” Use a controlled test before assuming the feature is broken.

- Have one person speak at a time; overlapping voices make turn detection and translation less reliable.
- Tap the microphone button before speaking instead of talking while the control is idle.
- Use a normal, steady volume and short complete phrases rather than whispering or shouting.
- Move away from traffic, music, fans and other speech. Echo and competing voices can be mistaken for the speaker.
- Keep the phone’s microphone openings unobstructed and hold the device close enough for clear capture.
- Use the same phrase in both directions. If one language works and the other does not, recheck that language’s support and downloaded pack.
Translation output is not guaranteed to be exact; Samsung explicitly says translation results may vary. For names, addresses, medical information, legal language or payment details, confirm the original wording rather than relying on an unverified translation.
8. Use Galaxy Buds only as an optional control method
Samsung documents Galaxy Buds integration with Interpreter. Touching the Buds can start a conversation, which is useful when holding the phone is inconvenient. The Buds do not remove the underlying requirements: the phone must support Interpreter, the language packs must be available, and the microphone and software must function.
- Pair the Buds with the compatible Galaxy phone and install pending phone, Buds and Interpreter updates.
- Open Interpreter and select the conversation languages.
- Use the documented touch control on the Buds to start the conversation, then follow the on-screen recording state.
- If the Buds path fails, disconnect them and repeat the same test using the phone microphone. This identifies whether the problem is the accessory connection or Interpreter itself.
Exact compatibility depends on the phone and Buds model, so a touch gesture that works on one combination may not be available on another.

Interpreter does not hear either speaker
- Confirm the Quick Settings microphone toggle is on.
- Set Settings > Apps > Interpreter > Permissions > Microphone to Allow only while using the app.
- Open Interpreter, tap the microphone icon and wait for recording to begin.
- Remove anything covering the microphone and test in a quiet location.
- Restart Interpreter and the phone if the recording indicator still does not respond.
Interpreter hears speech but says the language is unavailable
- Check that the phone runs Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or later and is an eligible model.
- Check regional availability for the exact language pair.
- Download the missing pack; English and Spanish are preinstalled, while other supported languages require downloads.
- Retry after both packs show as installed.
Live Translate works in Phone but not in a messaging app
- Open Settings > Galaxy AI > Call assist > Live Translate > Other apps.
- Confirm the app is listed and enabled.
- Update the messaging app and Samsung software.
- Verify the Samsung account, network connection and selected language packs.
Translation stops during a call
Reconnect to Wi-Fi or mobile data, check that Airplane mode is off, and keep the Samsung account signed in. If the call app changed or the feature vanished after an update, end the call, restart Interpreter or the Phone app, and verify the app list again before placing a new call.

What the current language coverage means
Samsung announced an expansion to 24 supported languages for Live Translate on October 14, 2026. That number describes Live Translate’s announced coverage at that time; it does not mean every language is available on every phone, app or regional software build. The practical test is whether your exact language pair appears in the feature’s selector and whether Samsung offers its required download.
Language support also does not promise identical quality across accents, dialects or expressions. Treat the selector, download status, device model, app list and region as separate checks rather than assuming that one successful translation proves all Galaxy AI translation modes are supported.
When to stop troubleshooting
If the phone is updated, eligible, online, signed in, using a listed app, has both language packs installed, and Interpreter still cannot record after permission and microphone tests, the remaining cause may be a device-specific software fault or a service-side availability issue. Record the phone model, Android and One UI versions, country, app name, language pair and the exact step that fails before contacting Samsung support. That information lets support distinguish an unsupported combination from a reproducible microphone or account problem.
