U.S. stock futures slipped on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, as investors weighed two linked risks: an AI investment boom that is demanding enormous cash outlays and an oil shock driven by escalating Middle East conflict. Nasdaq futures were down 0.1% and S&P 500 futures 0.2% in a Reuters morning snapshot, while Brent crude had reached $114.10 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate later traded above $103. The combination matters because expensive oil can keep inflation and interest-rate expectations high just as higher financing costs make speculative, long-duration technology valuations harder to support.
The previous session set the tone. On Thursday, Oct. 22, the Nasdaq fell 2.6%, its steepest one-day decline since early June, after earnings reports revived questions about whether AI infrastructure spending will generate dependable returns.
Why are futures down while oil is above $101?
Futures were lower because investors were repricing both the cost of capital and the risk of an energy-driven inflation rebound. Technology shares had already sold off sharply on Thursday as investors focused on AI funding requirements rather than headline earnings. Oil then extended its advance as attacks and wider tensions around Iran raised the perceived chance of supply disruption.
What the market did on Oct. 22 and Oct. 23
| Market or contract | Move or level | When and source |
|---|---|---|
| Nasdaq Composite | Down 2.6% | Thursday, Oct. 22; Reuters reported the steepest one-day fall since early June |
| Meta | Down 7.0% | Thursday, Oct. 22, after earnings raised spending concerns |
| Tesla | Down 3.1% | Thursday, Oct. 22, after its 2026 capital-spending plan was cut |
| Nasdaq futures | Down 0.1% | Reuters morning snapshot, Friday, Oct. 23 |
| S&P 500 futures | Down 0.2% | Reuters morning snapshot, Friday, Oct. 23 |
| Brent crude | $114.10 intraday; $116.72 settlement, up 3.1% | Friday, Oct. 23; the settlement was the highest since June 2022 |
| Front-month WTI crude | Up 3.8% to $103.27 | Friday, Oct. 23, according to Kiplinger |
| S&P 500 | Down 0.5% | Friday close, Associated Press |
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | Down 1.2% | Friday close, Associated Press |
| Nasdaq Composite | Down 0.2% | Friday close, Associated Press |
Futures are an indication of where contracts were trading before the opening bell, not a guarantee of the eventual cash-index close. Friday’s closing figures show how that early signal can change as investors react to new headlines, company guidance and bond-market moves.

Is the AI trade breaking?
The selloff does not establish that AI demand has ended. It shows that investors are demanding clearer evidence that the enormous capital required for data centers, computing equipment and related infrastructure will produce returns on a reasonable timetable.
Why earnings were not enough
Reuters said Meta recorded its first cash outflow in more than a decade. Tesla reduced its 2026 capital-spending plan. Those developments shifted attention from quarterly profit figures to the amount of cash companies must commit, the possibility of issuing stock to fund expansion and the cost of borrowing. A strong earnings report can therefore coincide with a falling share price when the market believes future financing needs have become more important than near-term revenue.
“It’s certainly a nervy market,” said Kit Juckes, Societe Generale’s global head of currency strategy. The comment captures the sensitivity to any sign that expected AI returns may arrive later, or at lower margins, than investors had assumed.

How do Middle East attacks affect Nasdaq futures?
They affect technology futures indirectly through the price of energy, inflation expectations and risk appetite. Reuters tied the oil move to Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia and reports of possible renewed U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran. The Associated Press described the war with Iran as having severely reduced world oil supply.
Those are reported catalysts and market risk perceptions, not proof that one event mechanically caused every price move. Traders raise the value they place on supply-disruption scenarios when attacks threaten production, shipping or regional infrastructure. That repricing can lift crude quickly and push investors away from assets whose valuations depend heavily on distant, uncertain cash flows.
Will higher oil force the Fed to keep rates higher?
Higher oil can make the Federal Reserve’s job more difficult by adding to headline inflation while the economy is still adjusting to elevated financing costs. The Associated Press reported the 10-year Treasury yield at 4.99% and said September PCE inflation was expected at 3.7%, above the Fed’s 2% target.

If sustained, an oil surge can keep market-based rate expectations and Treasury yields elevated. That raises the discount rate applied to future profits, which is especially damaging to long-duration growth stocks. The effect is not automatic: the Fed’s eventual decision depends on the breadth and persistence of inflation, labor-market conditions and other data. Reports about the October Federal Reserve meeting describe expectations, not the outcome.

The same shock can help one group while hurting another. The practical distinction is whether a company benefits from higher crude prices, must absorb them as a cost, or depends on cheap financing to fund growth.
| Exposure | Financing-cost sensitivity | Crude-price sensitivity | Earnings visibility | Main risk in this episode |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Technology and AI infrastructure | High; valuations depend on future cash flows and debt-funded investment | Indirect negative effect through inflation and rates | Under scrutiny because returns on current spending are uncertain | Higher yields, dilution risk and delayed payback |
| Energy producers | Lower relative sensitivity when realized crude prices rise | Direct positive exposure to higher oil prices | Improves with stronger selling prices, subject to production conditions | Geopolitical disruption and policy responses |
| Transport and fuel-sensitive consumer businesses | Varies by debt load and pricing power | Direct negative exposure because fuel is an input | Can weaken if higher costs cannot be passed to customers | Margin compression and softer demand |
This is a framework for interpreting the headline, not a buy-or-sell signal. Company-specific hedges, contracts and balance-sheet strength can make actual results differ from the broad sector pattern.

What should investors watch next?
The next data points will show whether Friday’s move was a short-lived risk reduction or the start of a wider reassessment.
- Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon earnings: Focus on management explanations of capital spending, data-center commitments and the timing of returns, not only reported revenue or earnings per share.
- Brent and WTI settlements: Repeated closes above $100 would indicate a more persistent energy shock than a single intraday spike. A reversal would reduce, but not eliminate, inflation pressure.
- The 10-year Treasury yield: A move higher would increase pressure on long-duration technology valuations; a decline would ease that specific headwind.
- October Federal Reserve communication: Watch the decision and accompanying guidance for how officials assess oil-related inflation. Market expectations ahead of the meeting are not the same as the eventual policy decision.
The central question is whether companies can convert extraordinary AI infrastructure spending into visible cash returns while energy costs and interest rates remain elevated. Until that becomes clearer, technology futures are likely to react sharply to both corporate spending guidance and geopolitical oil headlines.

Do index futures predict where stocks will finish that day?
No. Futures trade before the regular session and reflect the information available at that moment. New earnings guidance, bond yields or geopolitical reports can move the cash indexes substantially after the opening bell.

Why can a company’s stock fall after it reports strong earnings?
Investors price the cash needed to sustain growth as well as the profit already reported. If capital spending, debt issuance or potential shareholder dilution rises faster than expected, the stock can decline even when the latest quarter beat forecasts.
What would show that the oil shock is becoming persistent?
A series of elevated Brent and WTI settlements, rather than one intraday jump, would be a stronger signal that supply risk is lasting. Markets would also look for that strength to appear in inflation expectations and Treasury yields.
Could the Federal Reserve ignore a temporary oil spike?
Officials can distinguish a one-time price-level increase from inflation that keeps spreading through the economy. Their response will depend on how persistent energy prices become and what happens to broader inflation and employment data, so the October meeting’s outcome cannot be inferred from futures alone.
