Fujitsu’s historical product literature says data stored in its MB89R119B FRAM RFID chip survives 50 kGy of irradiation, and presents that property as useful for medical-device sterilization traceability. That is a Fujitsu product claim—not independent qualification of every FRAM tag, finished tag assembly, package or sterilization process.

What Fujitsu claims about FRAM and sterilization

In its MB89R119B product literature, Fujitsu contrasts FRAM with EEPROM, which it says can lose data under irradiation used for sterilization. Fujitsu states that FRAM-stored data survives 50 kGy irradiation and cites 25 kGy as the dose required for the medical-device sterilization example discussed in the document. The vendor’s wording is: “The data stored in FRAM survives under the 50kGy irradiation which is enough for the sterilization of medical devices.” Fujitsu MB89R119B product literature.

These figures describe Fujitsu’s claim about FRAM data retention in the product context of that historical literature. They do not establish that any complete tag—including its antenna, substrate, adhesive, encapsulation and packaging—will work after a particular gamma sterilization cycle. Nor do they establish suitability for other radiation sources, doses or process conditions.

Which Fujitsu RFID products are being discussed?

The medical-sterilization examples are high-frequency (HF) RFID components, but the cited Fujitsu materials describe separate models with different capacities.

Product example Frequency and protocol context FRAM capacity Application described
MB89R118C 13.56 MHz HF; Fujitsu materials refer to ISO/IEC 15693 communications 2 Kbytes Small medical or healthcare products, including gamma-sterilization traceability
MB89R119B HF RFID; Fujitsu presents its radiation-tolerance claim in medical-device sterilization context 256 bytes Medical-device traceability through sterilization

Specifications and application descriptions are from Fujitsu’s historical product materials for the MB89R118C and MB89R119B. The capacities are model-specific: the 2 Kbytes figure belongs to the MB89R118C, not the MB89R119B.

How the proposed healthcare use works

Fujitsu describes using RFID to associate identification and traceability data with medical, pharmaceutical and biomedical products. The intended record could follow an item from production and sterilization through logistics, warehousing, use and waste management. Retaining readable data through a sterilization stage could help preserve an item’s identity or process history for later handling.

What to check before evaluating a tag

A chip specification alone does not establish that an RFID system will work in a sterilization workflow. Fujitsu’s historical examples point to several system-level checks:

  • Radiation conditions: identify the sterilization method and actual dose, then obtain qualification evidence for the complete tag construction and packaging under that exact process. The MB89R119B literature’s 50 kGy statement is not a blanket approval for other conditions.
  • Frequency and protocol: confirm that the tag and reader/writer use compatible HF frequency and commands. Fujitsu’s cited HF materials refer to 13.56 MHz and ISO/IEC 15693, but compatibility depends on the actual implementation.
  • Memory and data layout: match the model’s capacity and memory organization to the fields and history the application needs.
  • Antenna, form factor and range: test in the intended placement, packaging and reader environment. Fujitsu’s earlier MB89R116 announcement describes 13.56 MHz ISO/IEC 15693 communications and says communication range is a reference that depends on antenna type and reader-module performance. Fujitsu MB89R116 announcement.
  • Lifecycle and support: confirm current availability, lifecycle status and application support with Fujitsu or a qualified integration partner. The cited materials are historical and do not establish current product availability.

Do not confuse the medical HF examples with Fujitsu’s aviation tag

Fujitsu also announced a separate 64 KB FRAM RFID tag for aircraft-part and maintenance histories. That was a UHF application, described with EPCglobal Class 1 Generation 2 compatibility and aviation environmental requirements; it is not the 13.56 MHz HF medical-sterilization example. The aviation announcement provides context for another use of FRAM RFID, not evidence that the products are interchangeable. Fujitsu aviation-tag announcement.

What the historical literature does—and does not—establish

The Fujitsu materials document a product-specific technical proposition: FRAM in the MB89R119B is said to retain stored data after 50 kGy irradiation, compared with the vendor’s cited 25 kGy medical-device sterilization example. They also describe HF components, capacities and potential traceability uses. They do not provide independent verification, current lifecycle confirmation, or qualification of a complete tag assembly for a defined sterilization process. A deployment decision therefore requires product-specific documentation and testing for the exact tag, packaging and process.
