The FTC announced in January 2025 that it was sending 6,764 payments totaling more than $1 million to people who bought Razer’s Zephyr mask and related products. The payments followed a settlement over marketing the Zephyr as “N95-grade,” even though, according to the FTC, it had never been certified as an N95 respirator.

Was the Razer Zephyr actually N95 certified?

No. The FTC said the Zephyr had never been certified as an N95 respirator and had not been submitted to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) or the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for certification. The FTC’s case concerned Razer’s “N95-grade” marketing; the agency’s announcement does not establish that the mask met N95 certification requirements.

FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine said: “These businesses falsely claimed, in the midst of a global pandemic, that their face mask was the equivalent of an N95 certified respirator.” The claim about the companies’ conduct is part of the FTC complaint and settlement context, not a finding from independent product testing described by the agency.

How much money was set aside, and how much went to buyers?

The settlement included two distinct amounts. The FTC said $1,071,254.33—an amount equal to Razer’s revenue from the masks—was designated for consumer relief. A separate $100,000 was a civil penalty. In January 2025, the FTC announced it was sending more than $1 million in refunds to 6,764 buyers; that is the distribution announcement, not an additional penalty.

Did Razer Zephyr buyers get a refund?

The FTC’s January 2025 announcement said payments were being sent to eligible buyers of Zephyr masks and related products. The FTC refund page gave recipients 90 days to cash a check and 30 days to accept a PayPal payment. Those acceptance windows have elapsed as of October 4, 2026, so the original instructions should not be treated as still open.

If you believe you were eligible but did not receive or complete a payment, consult the FTC’s Razer refund information for current official instructions or contact the refund administrator identified there. Do not send sensitive financial information in response to an unsolicited message claiming to recover a refund.

What did the FTC settlement require?

The FTC filed its complaint in April 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The Commission approved the complaint and proposed order by a 3–0 vote, and the Department of Justice filed the case after referral from the FTC. The stipulated order, dated May 6, 2024, provided for the consumer-relief amount and civil penalty described above.

The order also bars specified misrepresentations about COVID-related health benefits and unsubstantiated health claims about protective health equipment. It prohibits misleading implications of government affiliation or compliance with government standards. The FTC’s case page currently displays “Pending” while also listing the stipulated order and later refund announcement; the dated actions can be described, but that label alone does not establish the current docket status.

What should someone seeking respiratory protection check?

The FTC’s case establishes that the Zephyr was not N95-certified; it does not compare the mask with other products or provide product testing. For a respirator, check the status of the specific model rather than relying on a marketing phrase or the appearance of a filter.

  • Certification: Confirm the exact respirator model is currently approved by NIOSH. “N95-grade” is not the same as NIOSH certification.
  • Fit: A respirator needs an appropriate fit to provide its intended protection. Certification status alone does not guarantee a seal on every wearer.
  • Intended use: Match the respirator to the task and follow its manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Listing details: Verify approval for the specific model and listing; do not assume that a product family, accessory, or replacement filter shares the same status.
