To report unsafe food in India, use FSSAI’s Food Safety Connect portal or its mobile app. On the portal, sign in, choose Register New Complaint, select the relevant category and food business, enter the requested details, and submit. Keep the ticket number: it lets you check the complaint’s history later. FSSAI’s guidance covers concerns involving packaged food, food premises, and online aggregators or delivery platforms. Its live service guidance was checked on October 30, 2026; portal wording and state contacts can change.

At a glance: which FSSAI complaint route should I use?

Route Best for How tracking works
Food Safety Connect portal Filing and tracking a complaint through the web Use the homepage’s Complaint Tracker with the ticket number, or sign in and open View Complaint.
Food Safety Connect mobile app Filing through FSSAI’s documented app route FSSAI documents app registration and grievance filing; the portal tracking instructions describe the web portal.
FSSAI helpline or State/UT contact Getting help or contacting the relevant authority A phone call or other contact is not documented as creating a ticket visible in the portal tracker.

FSSAI’s Food Safety Connect service page points consumers to the official portal and app. If you reach the service through a FoSCoS page, choose Consumer Grievance; Track Application is a different function. FSSAI’s consumer-services page also distinguishes Track Complaint from Verify Licence.

For a complaint you want to follow online, the portal has two documented tracking routes: the homepage tracker, which asks for the ticket number, and the signed-in account’s View Complaint area. The mobile app is another documented way to enter a grievance, but its screens should not be assumed to match the web portal. The helpline and State/UT contacts are useful separate contact routes; they are not described as substitutes for a portal ticket when you need to use the portal tracker.

What should I prepare before filing a complaint?

Have the information you can provide about the food and the business ready, then add relevant evidence if you have it. FSSAI’s FAQ specifically suggests a product photograph and retail bill; it does not say either is compulsory for every complaint.

  • A clear description: State what happened in plain language—for example, what you observed and when. Stick to facts you can describe rather than presenting an unconfirmed suspicion as a proven finding.
  • Images, if available: Attach relevant product and bill images. The FAQ lists JPG, JPEG, and PNG as supplementary image formats.
  • Business identification: If you cannot find the business in the portal’s list, the filing guidance provides an Other FBO option. The FAQ discusses an outlet or premises FSSAI licence or registration number among the details for a business not selected from the list. Follow the fields shown for your complaint; the guidance does not establish that every field is optional.

A laboratory report is not a stated prerequisite for submitting a complaint. Do not delay reporting solely because you do not have one.

Think of the form as a way to connect a specific concern with a food business and place. Where you can, identify the product or premises, the outlet or location, and the circumstances in which you encountered the problem. If there is a listed business that appears to be the one involved, select it; if it is not listed, use the form’s Other FBO route and provide the requested identifying details. The FAQ’s reference to an outlet or premises licence or registration number is particularly relevant when the business is not selected from the list.

Evidence can help make your account more specific, but FSSAI’s instructions do not make a bill or test result a universal condition of filing. If you have a product photograph and retail bill, attach them in one of the supplementary image formats the FAQ names: JPG, JPEG, or PNG. If you do not have one of those items, enter the information you do have and complete the fields the portal marks as required.

How do I file an unsafe-food complaint on the FSSAI portal?

Use the portal’s consumer-grievance flow, complete the complaint fields, submit, and save the ticket number that the system generates. FSSAI’s filing guide says that the ticket number is the way a consumer can track the complaint.

  1. Open Food Safety Connect. Start from FSSAI’s Food Safety Connect service page and follow its link to the official portal. If you arrive through FoSCoS, choose Consumer Grievance, not Track Application.
  2. Sign in or create an account. The grievance FAQ calls for a valid email address or mobile number and OTP verification. Complete the verification prompt shown on screen.
  3. Start a complaint. Choose Register New Complaint.
  4. Select the concern and business. Choose the relevant category, then select the listed FBO where possible. If the business is not listed, use Other FBO and provide the details the form requests.
  5. Describe the concern and add evidence. Complete the mandatory fields. Give useful business and location details, explain what happened, and attach relevant images if available. The bill or laboratory result is not stated as a universal filing requirement.
  6. Review and submit. Check the details before sending. FSSAI’s FAQ says a submitted complaint cannot be edited; if you need to correct it, the FAQ says you may submit a fresh complaint.
  7. Save the ticket number. Record it somewhere you can retrieve it. You will need it for the homepage tracker, and keeping it also makes it easier to locate the complaint from your account.

The ticket is important because it links the submitted complaint to the tracking steps FSSAI describes. The filing guide puts it simply: “A ticket number will be generated against the complaint through which consumer can track the complaint.” Save the number after submission rather than relying on being able to reconstruct it later.

Before you submit, take a moment to compare the selected category and business with the issue you are reporting. The guidance covers packaged food, food premises, and online aggregators or delivery platforms, so the form is intended for more than one kind of food-safety concern. Choose the category and FBO that best match your case, and provide the requested details rather than trying to fit the complaint into a different portal function.

How do I file through the FSSAI mobile app?

FSSAI documents a mobile-app route that begins with choosing Consumer for lodging grievance, followed by sign-in or account creation. Use the app’s displayed prompts to submit the concern; do not assume its screens or labels are identical to the website.

  1. Open the FSSAI app and choose Consumer for lodging grievance.
  2. Sign in or create an account, completing any verification requested.
  3. Follow the app’s grievance prompts to enter the complaint details and submit.
  4. Keep any ticket number the app provides. For the documented web tracking methods, use the portal’s Complaint Tracker or sign in to View Complaint.

The app guide documents the entry and account route, while the portal’s tracking guide documents web-based tracking. If you cannot locate an app complaint in the portal, use the app or account information available to you and contact FSSAI for help rather than assuming that an unrelated application-tracking screen is the correct place.

Choose the route that fits how you want to file, but keep the distinction between route and tracking clear: both portal and app are FSSAI consumer grievance options, while the published tracking steps specifically explain how to use the portal. If you have already filed in the app and need status information, retain the ticket number and use the account or app information available to you; the web guide’s steps do not establish that every app screen is the same as the portal’s Complaint Tracker.

How do I track a complaint using its ticket number?

FSSAI documents two portal methods: enter the ticket number in the homepage’s Complaint Tracker, or sign in and find the complaint under View Complaint. In either case, open Complaint History to read the recorded status and updates.

Option 1: Use Complaint Tracker without signing in

  1. Open the Food Safety Connect portal homepage.
  2. Choose Complaint Tracker.
  3. Enter the complaint’s ticket number and submit the lookup.
  4. Open Complaint History to review the recorded information.

Option 2: Find it in your account

  1. Sign in to the portal account used for the complaint.
  2. Choose View Complaint.
  3. Find the relevant ticket and choose View.
  4. Read the complaint’s history for its recorded updates.

If the ticket number is missing, check any confirmation or account information you saved when submitting. FSSAI’s guidance does not promise that a phone call, email, or social-media post will create a ticket that can be found in this tracker.

The choice between the two methods is straightforward: use Complaint Tracker when you have the ticket number and want to look it up from the homepage; use View Complaint when you are signed in and want to find the complaint in your account. Both routes lead to Complaint History, where you can review the recorded updates. An application-status feature or a licence-verification page is not the complaint-tracking function.

Read the history as the record of that ticket, including its status and any updates shown there. If you filed a complaint but cannot find it, first check that you are entering the ticket number associated with that complaint or signing in to the account used to submit it. FSSAI’s instructions do not say that other channels automatically create portal tickets, so do not assume a call or email will appear in the same history.

What happens after I submit, and what does the 15-day period mean?

FSSAI’s FAQ says the complaint is first sent to the relevant packaged-food business, food premises, or delivery platform, with a copy to the State Food Safety Commissioner. The FAQ describes further referral to the respective state after an unsatisfactory response and a 15-day period; that is an escalation description, not a promise that every complaint will be resolved within 15 days.

Read the history for the response and use the portal’s feedback option if you are dissatisfied. FSSAI’s officer manual describes dissatisfaction being marked for possible further action. The portal also provides resolution feedback and a Closed Complaints history. The available guidance does not establish a universal resolution deadline or a complaint-resolution rate.

Keep your feedback tied to the complaint’s recorded facts. If the response does not address your concern, state what remains unresolved through the portal’s feedback mechanism and review the history for subsequent updates.

The 15-day reference is best understood as part of the described escalation process: the FAQ says an unsatisfactory response is referred to the respective state after that period. It does not state that every complaint will receive a final answer, be closed, or be resolved within 15 days. Nor does it publish a success rate that would let consumers predict an outcome from the status of another person’s complaint.

If you are dissatisfied with the response, use the feedback option associated with the complaint and explain the gap between the response and your concern. The officer manual describes marking dissatisfaction for possible further action, and FSSAI’s FAQ describes the state referral process. Check the complaint history for what has been recorded rather than treating the 15-day period as a guaranteed service-level deadline.

What if the portal stops responding or I need another contact route?

FSSAI’s FAQ recommends refreshing the page and, if the portal still does not respond, logging out and back in. FSSAI also publishes a grievance helpline and State/UT contacts for consumers who need assistance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Try a refresh: Reload the page once and see whether the current screen recovers.
  • Re-authenticate: If it still fails, log out and sign in again, as the FAQ suggests.
  • Use the published helpline: FSSAI lists 1800-11-2100. Its grievance page shows helpline hours as 07:00–23:00; confirm the live hours on that page before calling because contact information can change.
  • Find your State/UT contact: FSSAI publishes State/UT help-desk contacts. The relevant state authority may be useful when following up on an unsatisfactory response.

FSSAI’s portal FAQ specifically recommends registering through the grievance platform for processing there. Other contact methods may help you reach an authority, but the published guidance does not say they automatically create a portal ticket or populate its tracker.

If the portal remains unresponsive after the suggested refresh and sign-out/sign-in steps, use FSSAI’s published contact information to ask for assistance. The helpline page lists 1800-11-2100 and shows hours of 07:00–23:00; verify those details on the live FSSAI page before relying on them. For state-level help, consult the published State/UT contact list. Keep expectations about tracking separate: a call or other message is not documented as automatically producing the ticket number used by Complaint Tracker.

Do I need a food test before I report suspected adulteration?

No. FSSAI’s general consumer guidance describes testing through a notified laboratory as an option, separate from reporting a concern to the Food Safety Department. It is not a filing prerequisite stated in the complaint guidance.

FSSAI describes rapid kits as preliminary screening tools that complement standard laboratory analysis. Its DART material describes household checks for common adulterants. A household check should not be used to declare food legally unsafe, and a kit does not diagnose an illness. If you need formal analysis, consult the relevant notified-laboratory information rather than treating a home screening result as a substitute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are different purposes, not competing ways to file the same complaint. A consumer can report a concern through Food Safety Connect without first obtaining a laboratory result. A notified laboratory is a separate option when formal analysis is sought; rapid kits are described as preliminary screening that complements standard laboratory work. Household checks in FSSAI’s DART material may help screen for certain common adulterants, but they do not establish a legal finding about a food or diagnose illness.

Do not treat a home test as a reason to skip the reporting route or as proof of a regulatory conclusion. If your concern is about a product or premises, provide the relevant facts and evidence you have in the complaint. Testing is a distinct option, not an extra mandatory step in the portal’s filing process.

What should I do before I send the complaint?

A short final review can prevent avoidable follow-up and is particularly useful because FSSAI says a submitted complaint cannot be edited.

  • Confirm that you chose the consumer-grievance service, not an application-tracking or licence-verification function.
  • Check the category and business selection, including whether Other FBO is appropriate.
  • Review the details you entered and make sure the description is understandable and factual.
  • Attach relevant product or bill images if available; use a listed supplementary image format.
  • After submitting, retain the ticket number and use it to check the complaint history.

This final check matters because the FAQ says a submitted complaint cannot be edited. If you notice a problem afterward, FSSAI says a consumer may submit a fresh complaint; do not expect to edit the original ticket. Review the business selection, the details requested for the category, and the description before you send. Save the ticket number once the system generates it so you can use one of the documented tracking routes.

Does FSSAI publish a complaint-resolution success rate?

The FSSAI materials cited here describe filing, tracking, and escalation, but do not establish a public resolution-rate statistic. A status in Complaint History is an update about an individual ticket, not a published success rate.

Can I complain about a restaurant if I do not know its FSSAI licence number?

The filing guidance offers an Other FBO option when a business is not available in the list, while the FAQ discusses an outlet or premises licence or registration number among the details for that case. Enter the identifying information you do have and follow the form’s required fields; the guidance does not say every complaint can be filed without business-identifying details.

Do I have to upload a bill or laboratory report?

No universal requirement for either is stated in FSSAI’s guidance. The FAQ suggests a product photograph and retail bill where available, and a laboratory report is not a prerequisite stated for filing. Complete the fields the portal marks as required and attach relevant evidence you have.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does FSSAI’s 15-day period mean?

The FAQ describes referral to the respective state after an unsatisfactory response and a 15-day period. It is an escalation description, not a promise that every complaint will be resolved within 15 days.

Can I edit a complaint after submitting it?

FSSAI’s FAQ says a submitted complaint cannot be edited. It says a consumer may submit a fresh complaint if a correction is needed, so review the details before the first submission and keep the ticket number.

How can I track a complaint if I have the ticket number but am not signed in?

Open the Food Safety Connect portal homepage, choose Complaint Tracker, enter the ticket number, and open Complaint History. Alternatively, sign in and use View Complaint.

Will a call to the helpline show up in Complaint Tracker?

FSSAI’s published instructions do not say that a phone call or other contact automatically creates a portal ticket. For a complaint you want to track through the portal, register it through Food Safety Connect and save the generated ticket number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to test food at home before reporting suspected adulteration?

No. FSSAI describes notified-laboratory testing as a separate option and rapid kits or household checks as screening tools. A home check is not a filing prerequisite and should not be treated as a legal finding that food is unsafe.

What should I try if the portal is not responding?

FSSAI’s FAQ suggests refreshing the page and then logging out and back in if it still does not respond. The grievance page lists the helpline at 1800-11-2100 and shows hours of 07:00–23:00; confirm the live details before calling.

The Bottom Line

Use FSSAI Food Safety Connect to register the concern, provide the business and location details you can, and attach relevant evidence if available. Save the generated ticket number and check Complaint History through Complaint Tracker or your signed-in account. If you are dissatisfied, use the portal’s feedback option; the 15-day reference describes escalation after an unsatisfactory response, not a guaranteed resolution deadline.
