FrostSow is a garden-planning assistant that combines seven-day local forecasts, historical climate normals, freeze-risk prompts, watering guidance, harvest records and a hands-free voice interface. It is designed to turn questions such as whether the garden will freeze tonight or what to plant this week into decisions grounded in weather data. Its published architecture uses Open-Meteo for short-range forecasts, NOAA datasets for historical and near-real-time context, and the Gemini Live API for bidirectional audio. The project description documents the feature set and technology stack, but it does not establish field accuracy, alert latency or reduced crop losses.
What FrostSow is built to do
FrostSow is presented as a microclimate-calibrated planting companion for backyard gardeners, urban growers and homesteaders. Instead of treating a garden as a fixed calendar, it combines the current weather outlook with frost history and garden records. The intended result is a practical answer to a grower’s next decision rather than a generic regional planting date.
- Frost timing: localized first- and last-frost dates provide a seasonal baseline.
- Planting choices: companion-plant compatibility and current conditions help identify suitable crops for the week.
- Freeze risk: forecast conditions can trigger warnings before a damaging low temperature.
- Watering: weather-synced schedules are intended to avoid watering blindly when rain is expected.
- Records: harvest-yield tracking and garden notes create a history for later planning.
- Field interaction: a voice assistant lets a grower ask questions or log information without handling a phone with dirty or occupied hands.
The phrase microclimate-calibrated should be read as the project goal, not as a demonstrated guarantee for every bed. A forecast grid cell can differ from a sheltered courtyard, raised bed beside a wall or low spot where cold air settles.

|---|---|---|
| Open-Meteo | Hyper-local seven-day forecasts, precipitation tracking and triggers for frost warnings | Short-range outlook; the project description does not state a measured garden-level accuracy rate |
| NOAA agricultural climate normals | Frost-freeze date probabilities, growing-degree-day normals, minimum-temperature threshold probabilities and growing-season length normals | Primary normal period is 1991–2020; NOAA also lists 15-year supplemental normals for 2006–2020 specialized applications |
| NOAA RTMA | Hourly near-surface analyses that add higher-frequency spatial context | 2.5 km grid spacing over the contiguous United States, with data available from 2019 to the present in the current registry documentation |
| Garden records and optional sensors | Observed soil moisture, minimum temperatures, planting dates and yields can reveal conditions at the actual plot | Sensor support and calibration details are not stated in the FrostSow project description |
Forecasts for the next seven days
Open-Meteo supplies the near-term layer FrostSow needs for questions such as whether rain is likely, whether a cold night is approaching and whether watering can be delayed. A seven-day horizon is useful for sequencing sowing and protection work, but it should not be treated as a promise that conditions will remain unchanged. The forecast is a decision aid; a thermometer at the bed remains the final check when a few degrees determine whether seedlings survive.
Historical frost probabilities
NOAA’s agricultural normals add context that a single forecast cannot provide. The 1991–2020 normals describe the probability of frost and freeze dates, temperature-threshold events, accumulated growing-degree days and growing-season length. Those values help FrostSow distinguish an unusually early cold snap from the normal end of a season. NOAA also lists 2006–2020 supplemental normals for applications that need a 15-year period, but the appropriate baseline depends on the use case and the dataset selected.
Hourly analysis from RTMA
NOAA’s Real-Time Mesoscale Analysis (RTMA) provides hourly near-surface analyses on a 2.5 km grid across the contiguous United States. The registry lists data from 2019 onward. This can add useful detail between forecast updates, especially when a front or nighttime temperature drop is evolving. A 2.5 km cell is still much larger than most gardens, so RTMA cannot see every hedge, wall, slope or cold-air pocket. It complements, rather than replaces, an on-site minimum thermometer.

When is my first frost?
Use the localized frost-date view as a probability-based planning reference, not a single guaranteed date. Historical normals describe how often threshold temperatures occurred during 1991–2020, while the current forecast indicates whether this season is deviating from that baseline. Start tender crops early enough to leave a protection window, and update the plan as the seven-day outlook changes.

What can I plant this week?
FrostSow can combine the week’s forecast, frost timing and companion-plant compatibility to produce a shortlist. Before planting, check the crop’s own temperature tolerance, the exposure of the bed and whether you can cover it quickly. Treat a recommendation as a prioritization tool: hardy crops can go first, while tender transplants wait for a safer window or protection.
Will my garden freeze tonight?
Look at the overnight minimum and the warning trigger, then compare it with the temperature threshold relevant to the crop. A regional forecast may miss a sheltered urban garden or a low-lying bed. If the warning is close to the damage threshold, verify it with an outdoor minimum thermometer or frost alarm placed at plant height. The project description does not publish a false-alert rate or a measured alert latency, so warnings should not be treated as a safety-critical guarantee.
How do I protect seedlings from frost?
Use the warning as a prompt to inspect the beds before sunset. Prepare breathable frost cloth or another crop-appropriate cover, secure it so wind cannot expose the plants, and check that the material does not rest heavily on fragile stems. Containers can be moved to a sheltered location when practical. Remove covers when temperatures recover and follow the specific crop’s care guidance; FrostSow does not publish a crop-by-crop protection protocol.

Can I log a garden note without touching my phone?
The hands-free assistant is intended for exactly this situation. With the microphone connected, a grower can speak a planting date, observation, harvest quantity or frost-protection action while working. The documented audio path uses real-time bidirectional streaming, so the interaction is designed for conversation rather than a push-to-talk form. The project does not publish measured response latency or a transcript-accuracy benchmark, so confirm critical entries when the work is finished.

What the voice system does
FrostSow’s voice workflow is built around the Gemini Live API through @google/genai. Audio is streamed as 16 kHz PCM, allowing the assistant to receive and return conversational audio while the grower is in the field. The practical advantage is reduced device handling: ask for the next planting task, request a frost check or dictate a note while wearing gloves.
Voice is an interaction layer, not an additional weather source. The answer is only as good as the forecast, historical data, garden location and any observations supplied to the system. For a warning that could affect valuable plants, pair the spoken answer with a local temperature reading.
Technical architecture
The published implementation uses a React and TypeScript frontend built with Vite, Tailwind CSS and Recharts. A Node.js/Express backend and a dedicated WebSocket server bridge browser Web Audio API streams to the Gemini Live API. This separation lets the browser capture audio while the server manages the real-time connection and application data flow.
- The browser captures microphone audio through the Web Audio API.
- The WebSocket layer carries the stream to the server-side application.
- The Node.js/Express backend connects to Gemini Live through
@google/genaiusing 16 kHz PCM audio. - Weather and climate services provide forecast, precipitation, frost and historical context for the assistant’s response.
- React renders the planner, warnings, charts and records; Recharts is used for visual data displays.
Those components describe the project’s documented stack. They do not by themselves prove a particular deployment status, browser compatibility matrix or production uptime.

Using FrostSow during a growing season
- Set the garden location. Use the most precise location the application accepts, then note whether the bed is exposed, sheltered, elevated or in a low spot. Location precision improves the forecast input, but it cannot encode every physical feature.
- Establish a baseline. Review the first- and last-frost context and the relevant NOAA normal period before choosing tender-crop dates.
- Plan the coming week. Check the seven-day forecast, precipitation and companion-plant suggestions before sowing or transplanting.
- Check the evening risk. When a warning appears, compare the expected minimum with the crop threshold and verify borderline cases using a thermometer at plant height.
- Act and record. Cover or move vulnerable plants, adjust watering when rain is expected, and dictate what you did so the event becomes part of the garden record.
- Review outcomes. Harvest yields and notes can reveal recurring cold spots or timing mistakes that regional data alone cannot show.
FrostSow compared with simpler tools
| Capability | FrostSow | Calendar-based garden app | Sensor dashboard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spatial resolution | Open-Meteo local forecasts plus optional RTMA context; exact bed-level accuracy is not stated | Usually a location or hard-coded zone; product-specific details not stated | Point measurement at the sensor; coverage depends on placement and number of sensors |
| Forecast horizon and updates | Seven-day forecast layer; RTMA context updates hourly | Not stated | Live readings may be available, but forecast capability is not stated |
| Historical frost baseline | NOAA 1991–2020 normals, with 2006–2020 supplemental normals listed for specialized uses | Not stated | Usually depends on the dashboard’s own history; not stated |
| Sensor calibration | Not stated in the project description | Not stated | Depends on the hardware and installation; not stated |
| Hands-free interaction | Real-time voice assistant using 16 kHz PCM audio | Not stated | Not stated |
| Data openness | Uses named Open-Meteo and NOAA sources; NOAA data are open, attribution is requested and NOAA endorsement must not be implied | Not stated | Depends on the vendor |
| Field validation | No controlled accuracy, false-alert or crop-loss study is reported | Not stated | Not stated |
The tools are complementary rather than mutually exclusive. A calendar gives a quick seasonal reminder, a sensor reports what is happening at one spot, and FrostSow is intended to connect forecasts, climate history, decisions and voice notes.
Hardware that can improve decisions
These accessories are task-enabling options, not products named or endorsed by FrostSow:
- Soil-moisture sensor: useful for checking whether a weather-synced watering suggestion matches the bed’s actual moisture.
- Outdoor minimum thermometer or frost alarm: provides a local check when a forecast minimum is near the crop-damage threshold.
- USB microphone or headset: supports the documented browser voice workflow in a noisy or windy garden.
Place measuring equipment where plants actually are. A sensor mounted against a warm wall, under a roof or in direct morning sun can produce a misleading comparison with an exposed bed.

NOAA Climate Data Online can be queried through https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/cdo-web/api/v2/{endpoint}. The API requires a token, returns JSON and supports dataset, station, location, date and data-type parameters. A developer integrating NOAA data should retain the dataset and station context with each value so a frost date or threshold is not detached from its geography and period.

What FrostSow has not demonstrated
The available project description documents functionality and implementation choices, not an independent field trial. It reports no controlled comparison against thermometers, no false-alert percentage, no measured audio latency and no quantified reduction in frost damage or crop loss. It also does not establish current deployment availability, supported regions beyond the stated NOAA CONUS context, sensor-calibration procedures or long-term reliability.
That distinction matters when deciding how much to automate. FrostSow can organize information and prompt timely action, but a grower remains responsible for confirming a borderline temperature, choosing a crop-appropriate cover and checking that a spoken note was saved correctly. The strongest use is as a decision layer over open forecasts, climate normals and local observations—not as a replacement for an on-site thermometer or horticultural judgment.
