Frogfoot says it plans to keep acquiring smaller fibre network operators, while Octotel and MetroFibre are separately assessing whether a combination could make strategic sense. As of 3 October 2026, the reporting does not establish that Octotel and MetroFibre have agreed to or completed a merger.
What is happening with Frogfoot, Octotel and MetroFibre?
These are two distinct consolidation stories in South Africa’s fibre market. Frogfoot CEO Shane Chorley said the company intends to continue buying smaller fibre network operators (FNOs), particularly those serving affluent suburbs, and would prefer to be an acquirer as the sector consolidates. His comments describe a strategy, not announced future purchases. He said: “We have done a couple of those already and we’ll continue to do that.”

Separately, Octotel and MetroFibre Networx were assessing potential synergies and a possible combination. Octotel CEO Trevor van Zyl described the idea as one under examination: “At the moment we are assessing all the synergies, and there’s no doubt that there are definitely opportunities to explore.” Reporting on 2 October 2026 still described the combination as under assessment; it did not establish a signed or completed merger. TechCentral reported both developments, and its account of the Octotel–MetroFibre discussions characterizes the combination as an opportunity being examined.
Why are Octotel and MetroFibre considering a combination?
A shared investor is the link
The reported connection is AIIM, not Frogfoot. An AIIM-led consortium acquired Octotel in 2024, and AIIM is MetroFibre’s largest shareholder. The reporting says this common investor context is relevant to the discussions; it does not mean a transaction has been agreed.
#1 Best Overall

Different footprints may offer scope to combine assets
Van Zyl said Octotel passes just under 400,000 homes across Cape Town, the West Coast and the Garden Route. He described Octotel’s overlap with MetroFibre in the Western Cape as minimal: MetroFibre’s presence there was built around enterprise services, while its consumer network is concentrated in Gauteng and other areas. These are his descriptions, rather than an independently measured overlap analysis.
Van Zyl said the companies could find ways to use their assets and infrastructure together, but also acknowledged the complexity of a combination and questioned what consolidation would deliver. He said Octotel and MetroFibre were continuing to invest while considering the possibility: “We’re putting our foot flat.” That is his characterization of their investment plans, not evidence of a transaction timetable.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Van Zyl said a combined operator could become South Africa’s third-largest fibre operator. That ranking is his description; the reporting does not supply an independent market-wide comparison or comparable network totals to verify it.
What acquisitions has Frogfoot made?
Mitsol’s KwaZulu-Natal assets
Frogfoot said its acquisition of Mitsol’s KwaZulu-Natal fibre assets would add 19,000 homes to its network. Mitsol was to continue operating as an internet service provider on the network under its Resinet brand. Frogfoot described the footprint as complementary to its existing network, with limited overlap. These figures and characterizations are the company’s statements. Frogfoot’s announcement on the Mitsol assets sets out those terms.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,500 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Infinity Wireless assets in Rustenburg
Frogfoot’s news index also lists its December 2025 acquisition announcement for Infinity Wireless fibre network assets in Rustenburg. The company said the transition into Frogfoot’s national operating model began on 1 November 2025. Infinity was to remain an ISP, with its existing customers staying with it during the transition. Frogfoot’s news index includes the announcement.
What Frogfoot says it expects next
Chorley said Frogfoot expects larger networks could come up for sale in the next few years and wants to participate in consolidation, preferably as the buyer. Abraham van der Merwe, who leads Frogfoot, Vox and Hypa, expressed the underlying scale argument: “Infrastructure requires scale, so that always leads to consolidation.” That is his view on the economics of infrastructure, not confirmation that a particular sale or deal is forthcoming.

What does Sabvest’s investment disclosure show?
Sabvest Capital’s 24 August 2026 SENS release described a proposed subscription for new shares in Frogfoot Holdings and Vox as part of a broader composite transaction. Sabvest said its aggregate subscription would be R754 million for an interest of at least 8.97%, using an enterprise value of R14.4 billion ascribed to the companies. The release gave 1 October as the effective date, subject to conditions precedent, and set 24 September as the deadline for those conditions. The disclosure establishes the proposed terms at announcement; it does not by itself confirm the transaction’s final implementation status. Sabvest’s SENS release also described Frogfoot as an open-access network operator and Vox as a national ISP, and said the companies were privately held South African businesses with the same shareholders at the time of disclosure.
