A compatible SanDisk USB-C flash drive can help you move photos and other files off a phone so they no longer occupy its local storage. It does not increase the phone’s built-in capacity, and a single drive is not a complete backup. For larger libraries or camera recording, a portable SSD or a compatible SD or microSD card may be a better fit.

Choose the storage type for the job

Option Best suited to What to check
SanDisk Phone Drive or compatible USB-C flash drive Moving photos and files between a compatible phone and a computer, or keeping a portable copy Phone and computer ports, device and app support, capacity, and transfer workflow
Portable SSD Larger photo or video libraries, travel storage, or computer backup tasks Capacity, read/write needs, durability, host ports, and file formats
SD or microSD card A camera or other device designed for that card family Host support, card capacity, and sustained write speed required by the recording mode

These options store files externally; they do not add to a phone’s built-in storage. SanDisk describes its Phone Drive as a Type-C and Type-A flash drive for transferring files between compatible USB-C phones and tablets, Macs, and computers with Type-A ports. Confirm your particular device supports the drive and intended workflow before buying: a plug that fits does not guarantee recognition or full-capacity support. See SanDisk Phone Drive details.

Move phone photos to a USB drive

Check compatibility first

Identify the phone’s port and verify that its manufacturer supports external USB storage. Also check the drive’s connector, the computer you plan to use, and whether you need an app for file management or backup. Host devices can impose limits involving power, file systems, partition tables, supported capacity, and whether they support flash drives or SSDs at all. Check the host manufacturer’s manual or specifications if recognition is uncertain. SanDisk’s host-device compatibility guidance covers these limitations.

Transfer, verify, then remove local copies

  1. Connect the drive to the phone using its supported connector and workflow.
  2. Use the phone’s supported file manager or compatible SanDisk software to copy the photos or other files. SanDisk says Memory Zone can automatically back up photos, videos, music, documents, and contacts with supported products and platforms; its compatibility information is product- and platform-specific, so confirm support for your exact combination before relying on automatic backup. Check SanDisk Memory Zone.
  3. Open files from the drive, or connect it to a computer, to confirm the copies are readable. Do not delete the phone’s originals until you have verified the transfer and considered whether you have another backup.
  4. After making any additional backup copies you need, delete the chosen local files using the phone’s normal controls to reclaim space.

SanDisk’s Phone Drive data sheet advertises read speeds of up to 100MB/s. That is a vendor-stated maximum, not an independently measured result or a guarantee of the speed you will see; actual transfers depend on the drive model, host, files, and connection. Read the Phone Drive data sheet.

Pick a capacity based on what you will store

There is no single best capacity for every reader. Estimate the photo and video files you already have, how much they are likely to grow, and whether the drive is for a one-time transfer or ongoing storage. SanDisk’s USB-drive category gives these illustrative use cases; they are guidance, not a universal storage calculation.

Capacity SanDisk’s illustrative use case
64GB Basic personal files and casual photos
128GB Medium-sized media libraries
256GB Larger collections and archives
512GB or 1TB Larger libraries and projects

These examples come from SanDisk’s USB flash drive category, not from an independent capacity test. See SanDisk’s USB-drive category.

  • Backward compatible with USB 2.0
  • Secure file encryption and password protection(2)

Use a portable SSD for larger workloads

A portable SSD is worth considering when a flash drive’s capacity or workflow is not a good fit for a large photo or video library, travel storage, or computer backup. Compare the exact model’s capacity, read and write needs, durability, connection ports, and supported file formats. SanDisk lists its cited Extreme Portable SSD as compatible with a range of USB-C devices, including smartphones, laptops, and tablets, but that does not establish compatibility with every device. Check the exact model and host specifications before purchase. Explore SanDisk external SSDs and consult the Extreme Portable SSD data sheet.

Choose an SD card that your camera supports

For cameras and other devices designed for removable cards, match both the card family and performance rating to the host and recording mode. SanDisk’s compatibility article, updated August 13, 2026, gives these capacity ranges: SDHC is 4GB–32GB and SDXC is 64GB–2TB. An SDXC card requires an SDXC-compatible host; a host limited to SD or SDHC cannot use SDXC.

Keep more than one copy of important files

A drive can provide another place to keep photos, but one copy on one drive is not a complete backup plan. SanDisk Support advises: “Moving data from the system local drive to one other location is not a backup.” It also says: “Backup data to at least two separate places.” Treat a phone-to-drive transfer as one copy step, and keep another separate copy of important files. These are SanDisk’s support recommendations, not a claim that one particular backup method suits every reader. Read SanDisk’s backup guidance.
