Free-to-play usually means a game’s base version is listed at no upfront price; free-to-keep means a limited-time offer lets you claim the game for ongoing access after the promotion. A Free Weekend is neither: it lets you play only during its stated event window.
What each Steam offer means
Free-to-play
Steam’s Free To Play catalog lists games such as Counter-Strike 2, Warframe, Dota 2, and Team Fortress 2 with the price label “Free.” That indicates no upfront price for the base game while it is offered under that model. It does not mean every expansion, add-on, or optional purchase is free; check the individual game’s store page.

Free-to-keep
“Free-to-keep” is common wording for a time-limited giveaway: claim the game during the promotion and it is intended to remain in your account after the offer ends. It is not established here as a formal Steam store category, and the phrase alone does not specify every campaign’s eligibility or account requirements. Follow the specific offer’s terms.
Free Weekend
A Free Weekend grants temporary access between the event’s stated start and end. In a Steam News announcement for Jump Space, the publisher explicitly distinguished the event from a permanent giveaway: “This is a Free Weekend, not Free-To-Keep forever.” Downloading or playing during the event does not by itself mean you keep the game afterward.

How to tell whether you’ll keep a Steam game
- Read the exact offer wording. “Free Weekend” or “play for free until” signals temporary access. “Free-to-keep” or wording that says you can keep the game signals an intended lasting claim.
- Check the deadline and conditions. Look at the individual game’s offer page for when the claim ends and any region, account, or other requirements. There is no universal set of conditions established for every giveaway.
- Confirm what the offer covers. Distinguish the base game from paid DLC, expansions, and optional in-game purchases; a free base game does not make those extras free.
What happens when a Steam Free Weekend ends?
Temporary access ends at the event’s stated close unless you separately purchase the game or another offer grants lasting access. A Free Weekend announcement can have its own exact start and end—for example, the Jump Space announcement described a Thursday-to-Monday event and said it was not a free-to-keep giveaway. Use the event page’s dates rather than assuming that “free” means permanent.
