There is no single free replacement for Photoshop, Lightroom, and Acrobat. They solve different problems: Photoshop edits pixels and composites layers, Lightroom develops camera RAW files and organizes photo libraries, and Acrobat handles PDF documents. Choose the replacement by the job you need to complete, then verify your operating system, camera files, PSD/PDF documents, plug-ins, color workflow, and privacy requirements.
For layered image editing, start with GIMP, Krita, or the browser-based Photopea. For camera RAW development, darktable and RawTherapee are the strongest starting points. For PDF editing, annotation, form filling, and signing, PDFgear advertises those functions, but its claims should be checked against your files and security requirements rather than treated as independent test results.
Why the three Adobe applications need different substitutes
“Adobe alternative” is too broad to guide a download. The applications have different data models and workflows, so a program that is excellent for one job can be unsuitable for another.

Free Photoshop alternatives for layered editing
GIMP: the broadest desktop starting point
GIMP is the most natural first choice when you need a conventional desktop pixel editor for selections, layers, masks, retouching, and compositing. It is a sensible place to begin for photographs, web graphics, and one-off composites when you do not need an Adobe-only plug-in or a precisely matched Photoshop document.
Do not assume that opening a PSD in GIMP proves Photoshop compatibility. A document can contain features that another application interprets differently, including smart objects, adjustment layers, text rendering, layer effects, embedded profiles, and plug-in output. Before moving a production file, open representative PSDs, inspect every layer and mask, compare text and color, and export a flattened copy for recipients who will not use GIMP.

Krita: choose it when painting is the center of the work
Krita belongs on the shortlist when the main activity is digital painting or illustration rather than photographic retouching. The public-sector comparison identifies it specifically as an option when painting is central. That distinction matters: a painting-oriented interface and brush system can be a better fit for an illustrator even if a photographer prefers a different tool.
Use the same compatibility checks as with GIMP for PSD files. Preserve the original, test a copy, and identify which layers, masks, blend modes, and text elements must remain editable. If collaborators require an Adobe-specific plug-in or action, treat that dependency as a separate requirement instead of assuming an alternative can reproduce it.

Photopea: a browser route for occasional work
Photopea is the browser-based option in the comparison. It can be useful on a managed computer where installing software is not permitted, or for occasional edits when a full desktop setup would be excessive.
Browser convenience changes the risk profile. Check whether your organization permits uploading sensitive images, whether the browser remains connected for the operation, and whether the file size and memory demands fit the device. Test a representative PSD rather than relying on the file extension alone, then download the result and verify that the intended layers, text, and color profile survived.

Paint.NET appears in the public comparison as another free photo-editing option. It may be appropriate for straightforward desktop image work, but the available evidence does not establish Photoshop feature parity or identical PSD rendering. Evaluate it against a small acceptance checklist: required layer operations, selection tools, masks, color management, export formats, and any plug-ins your work depends on.
Free Lightroom alternatives for RAW development and organization
darktable: powerful RAW processing, not a drop-in Lightroom clone
darktable is designed around RAW editing and a photo workflow, and its feature documentation describes support for standard, RAW, and HDR formats plus color-management capabilities. Those characteristics make it a strong candidate when your priority is developing camera originals rather than recreating every Lightroom screen.
The project itself makes the boundary explicit in its FAQ: “Darktable is an alternative to Lightroom the same way any other raw editor is, since it edits raw files, but it would be a mistake to think it’s a direct replacement.” Treat that as a workflow warning. A program can produce an excellent rendered image while organizing files, storing edits, handling metadata, or exchanging catalogs differently from Lightroom.

Before committing, import a copy of a real shoot containing the camera bodies and lenses you use. Check the initial rendering, white-balance controls, lens corrections, highlight recovery, export profiles, star ratings, keywords, and backup process. Confirm how the application references the original files if you keep photographs on removable or network storage. None of those checks can be inferred solely from support for the RAW extension.

RawTherapee’s official site describes it as a free, cross-platform RAW-processing program for files from a broad range of digital cameras. That makes it a practical candidate if you need a desktop RAW developer on more than one operating system or want to process camera originals without subscribing to an Adobe plan.
“Broad range” is not a guarantee for your newest camera. RAW support depends on the exact model and sometimes on the software version. Download a few untouched files from each camera you use and verify that they open, display the expected metadata, and export with the color profile required by your print, web, or video workflow. Also test batch processing and sidecar or metadata handling before replacing an established catalog process.
Snapseed: a different kind of Lightroom alternative
Snapseed is listed among free photo-editing options, but a mobile editor should not be treated as an automatic substitute for a desktop RAW catalog. It can fit quick adjustments on a phone or tablet; it is a poor match when you need a large, searchable library, multi-device originals, or a carefully managed camera-to-print color workflow.
Decide whether the phone is the source of the photograph or merely an editing destination. Keep original files in a separate, backed-up location and verify what the mobile workflow preserves when you export or share an image.

Free Acrobat alternatives: match the PDF operation
PDF tasks that look similar in a menu are technically different. Start by naming the operation, not by searching for a generic “PDF editor.”

For a form, fill every field, save, close, reopen, and print to PDF. For a signature, confirm whether the workflow meets the legal and organizational definition of a digital signature rather than merely placing an image on a page. For editing, compare pagination, fonts, links, comments, and form fields before sending the file. If the document contains confidential information, review where processing occurs and whether uploading is allowed by your policy.
Compatibility: the checks that prevent an expensive switch
Compatibility is specific to a file and workflow, not a yes-or-no property of an application. Run these checks before moving a project or library.
- Identify originals and working files. Keep untouched camera RAW files, PSDs, and source PDFs separate from converted or exported copies. Never test migration on the only original.
- List the exact formats. Include each camera’s RAW extension, PSD or layered format, HDR files, color profiles, TIFF/JPEG export settings, and PDF variants used by your clients or agencies.
- Inventory plug-ins and fonts. Record anything that creates or renders content inside Photoshop, Lightroom, or Acrobat. An alternative may open the container while missing the effect that made the file useful.
- Check color management. Compare monitor profiles, working spaces, embedded profiles, soft-proof settings, and export conversions. A visually similar image on one screen is not proof of matching print or web color.
- Test metadata and organization. For photo libraries, verify ratings, keywords, captions, dates, GPS data, sidecars, folder moves, and backup restoration. For PDFs, verify comments, fields, signatures, links, and accessibility tags.
- Confirm the operating environment. Check desktop operating system, processor architecture, browser support, mobile platform, offline needs, network storage, and administrator restrictions.
- Check privacy and collaboration. Browser or cloud processing may be unacceptable for confidential images or documents. Make sure collaborators can open the resulting files without the same application.
A practical selection procedure
- Write the job in one sentence. For example: “Develop RAW files from my camera and export tagged JPEGs,” “retouch a layered product image,” or “fill and sign a supplier PDF.”
- Choose the narrowest candidate group. Use GIMP, Krita, or Photopea for pixel work; darktable or RawTherapee for RAW development; and a PDF-focused application such as PDFgear for the PDF operations you actually need.
- Create a representative test set. Include a difficult PSD, several RAW files from every camera, and each PDF type you handle. Include a damaged-looking or scanned example if those occur in normal work.
- Define pass/fail conditions before opening the files. Specify which layers must remain editable, which metadata must survive, what color profile is required, whether forms must calculate, and what signature evidence recipients need.
- Test the complete path. Import or open, edit, save in the native format, close, reopen, export, and have another viewer or collaborator inspect the result. A successful first opening is not enough.
- Decide what stays in the old workflow. If one mandatory plug-in, catalog function, or PDF signature process has no equivalent, retain the original application for that task and use the free tool where it is reliable.
- Document the repeatable process. Record application version, export settings, color profiles, folder rules, metadata conventions, and backup locations so a future update does not silently change results.
Common failure modes and fixes
A PSD opens but looks different
Flattened previews can hide missing adjustment layers, smart objects, masks, fonts, or blend modes. Open the layer stack, identify the first difference, install permitted fonts, and export a flattened reference for visual comparison. If an Adobe-only effect is mandatory, preserve the original PSD and use the alternative only for a defined part of the process.

A RAW file opens but the result is not the same
RAW files are sensor data, not finished photographs. Different demosaicing, camera profiles, white-balance defaults, lens corrections, highlight handling, and color-management settings change the initial image. Compare controls and export profiles using the same file; do not judge compatibility from the filename extension or a single default preview.
The photo editor handles images but not the library
Image editing and library management are separate capabilities. If ratings, keywords, folder moves, sidecars, or multi-device access are essential, test those actions explicitly. A RAW processor that produces excellent exports can still require a separate catalog strategy.
A PDF tool annotates but cannot alter the document
Annotations sit above page content; editing existing text changes the page itself. Confirm that the candidate supports the operation you need, and test scanned pages, embedded fonts, tables, links, and form fields. If OCR is required, verify that it is actually offered and that the resulting text is acceptable for your documents.

A signature is accepted visually but not institutionally
A pasted signature image and a certificate-backed digital signature are not interchangeable. Ask the recipient which evidence, identity checks, certificate authority, and audit trail are required before choosing a tool.
How to combine free tools without creating a fragile workflow
A mixed setup is often more dependable than forcing one application to cover every Adobe role. Use one pixel editor for layered retouching, one RAW processor for camera originals, and one PDF utility for document operations. Define the hand-off format at each boundary: export a color-managed TIFF or JPEG from the RAW stage, retain layered originals for ongoing compositing, and use PDF for the final document rather than repeatedly converting between image and PDF formats.
Keep a source-of-truth copy for every project. For photographs, that normally means the untouched RAW files plus sidecars or catalog backups. For graphics, retain the layered working file and a flattened delivery file. For PDFs, keep the received original and a clearly named edited or signed copy. This separation lets you change tools later without losing the ability to reproduce a result.
Bottom line
Choose by operation, then prove compatibility with your own files.
