KiCad is the best free PCB design software for most people: it is an open-source EDA suite for Windows, macOS and Linux, with schematic capture, simulation, PCB layout, 3D viewing and manufacturing export. If you prefer a gentler learning curve, try LibrePCB; for browser-based design, EasyEDA is the clearest fit; and if you need electronics and mechanical CAD together, consider Autodesk Fusion, while accounting for its strict free-tier board limits.

Which free PCB software should you choose?
Choose KiCad for the most complete unrestricted workflow
KiCad is the safest default if you want a capable, broadly usable desktop tool without a paid-tier board-size ceiling in the cited documentation. Its suite includes schematic capture, integrated circuit simulation, PCB layout, 3D rendering, plotting and data export, plus a component library with thousands of symbols, footprints and 3D models. It is available for Linux, Windows and macOS. The KiCad 10.0 documentation also describes newer capabilities such as design blocks and additional import support.
Expect a more engineering-oriented interface than in beginner-first products, particularly when managing libraries. Check the current version and library requirements before beginning a project, especially if you are following a tutorial written for an earlier release.
Choose LibrePCB for an approachable maker workflow
LibrePCB is designed for both beginners and experienced users, and its project site emphasizes simplicity, cross-platform availability and freedom from an online account. Its board editor includes design-rule checking, and official libraries provide 3D models for many standard packages. The project site records version 2.1.1 as released June 12, 2026. See the LibrePCB project site and its documentation.

- Compact Packing: Space-saving bag packaging, take little footprint
- High Quality: Our PCB board made of durable glass fiber FR-4 material with 1.6 mm thickness
- Wide Applications: Suitable for analog circuits and discrete circuits, DIY electronics projects and various DIP type components
Its simpler approach is appealing for learning and ordinary maker boards. For a complex or specialized design, first compare the available libraries and confirm that the routing, simulation and collaboration features you need are present.
Choose EasyEDA for browser-first design
EasyEDA is a practical choice if you want to start in a browser, share work easily or move from layout toward manufacturing services without installing a desktop suite. Its pricing page says the core features are free, describes unlimited projects and libraries for individuals or teams in the free plan, and explicitly says designs made with EasyEDA are available for commercial use under its stated terms. Review the current details at EasyEDA’s pricing page, including optional paid support and any service or backup limits that matter to your workflow.

- 32 Boards In Five Sizes: Choose 4 × 6 cm, 3 × 7 cm, 5 × 7 cm, 2 × 8 cm or 7 × 9 cm boards for compact circuits, controller interfaces, classroom soldering exercises and larger point-to-point builds
- Double-Sided FR4 For Soldered Prototypes: Approximately 1.6 mm FR4 provides a rigid base for permanent electronics builds, while pre-tinned plated-through holes provide solderable connections accessible from both sides
- Standard 2.54 mm Grid Fits Common Through-Hole Parts: Lay out resistors, LEDs, DIP sockets, pin headers, terminal blocks, sensors and jumper wires on a 0.1 in pitch, then create each required connection with soldered leads, bridges or insulated wire
- From Breadboard Test To Permanent Build: Transfer a proven circuit into a compact soldered assembly for sensor nodes, controllers, alarms and STEM demonstrations; corner mounting holes help secure finished boards in enclosures or on panels
- Set Expectations Before Soldering: These are isolated-pad perfboards with no breadboard-style buses or stripboard traces, and the kit does not include components, wire, solder or tools; plan the layout and check continuity before applying power
Free editor access is not the same as a fully local workflow: take account and cloud-storage considerations into account when choosing where to keep important project files.
Choose Fusion when mechanical integration matters
Autodesk Fusion connects electronics and mechanical design, making it useful when a board must fit an enclosure, assembly or other CAD model. Autodesk’s free hobbyist/maker version includes two schematic sheets, two signal layers and an 80 cm² board area. Those limits make it suitable for small designs, not a substitute for an unrestricted professional PCB workflow. Check Autodesk’s current Fusion personal-use terms and electronics help documentation before committing to a project.

Is KiCad really free?
Yes. KiCad’s official documentation describes it as a “free and open-source electronics design automation (EDA) suite.” That is different from software that is free only below a project-size limit or as a vendor-defined tier. LibrePCB is also an open-source project. EasyEDA offers free core features under plan terms, while Fusion’s free personal-use electronics tier has explicit scope limits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you use free PCB software commercially?
EasyEDA explicitly says on its pricing page that PCBs designed with EasyEDA are available for commercial use, subject to the stated plan terms. The cited KiCad and LibrePCB pages establish that the tools are free and open-source, but the cited material does not provide a detailed commercial-use ruling for every possible project or dependency. Check the relevant software and library licenses for your specific use. Fusion’s cited terms concern a personal-use tier, so do not assume that personal-use eligibility covers professional production.

What to check before starting a board
- Board scope: Fusion’s free electronics limits are explicit; for the other tools, verify current software requirements and any service-plan terms relevant to your project.
- Libraries: Check that the symbols, footprints and 3D models you need are available and suitable. KiCad documents a library of thousands of items; LibrePCB highlights official libraries with 3D models for many standard packages.
- Workflow and storage: Decide whether you want a local desktop workflow or browser-oriented design, and whether cloud access or an account fits your project.
- Output: Confirm that your tool can produce the fabrication files your board manufacturer requests. KiCad documents plotting and data export; EasyEDA emphasizes a path to manufacturing services.
- Mechanical fit: If enclosure or assembly integration is central, Fusion’s synchronized ECAD/MCAD workflow may outweigh its free-tier limits.
How to get from PCB design to fabrication
- Choose the EDA tool and verify project scope. Confirm operating-system support, board limits, license terms and required component libraries before drawing the schematic.
- Capture the schematic and assign footprints. Check component pin mappings and footprint dimensions against the parts you intend to use.
- Lay out the board and run design checks. Use the editor’s design-rule checks, review clearances and connections, and inspect the 3D board view where available.
- Export manufacturing files. Generate the Gerber and drill or other fabrication files required by your board house; file names and export menus differ by software and version, so follow the tool’s current documentation.
- Review the manufacturer’s file preview before ordering. Check board outline, copper layers, masks, silkscreen and drill placement so an export error is caught before fabrication.
