You can use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote legally at no cost through Microsoft 365 for the web. The free account provides browser versions and 5 GB of OneDrive storage, but no installable Windows desktop apps or technical support. For desktop Office, you need an eligible subscription, license, or work or school account.
Avoid “free Office” cracks, activators, and download sites: they are not legitimate ways to obtain Microsoft software and can put your device and files at risk.
What Microsoft actually provides for free
Microsoft’s free offering is available at microsoft365.com. It includes web versions of:
- Word
- Excel
- PowerPoint
- Outlook
- OneNote
The apps run in a browser and save documents through OneDrive. The free account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage, not the 1 TB included with Microsoft 365 Personal or with each shared user of Microsoft 365 Family. Microsoft’s free web apps comparison also notes that the free account does not include technical support.

A Microsoft account is required. You can create one with a new Outlook.com address or an existing email address. A Free badge on your Microsoft account indicates that you have access to the free web apps but do not have an active Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription.

The free web account does not include Access or Publisher. On phones and tablets smaller than 10.1 inches, the free mobile offering provides basic editing, and availability can vary by country or region, according to Microsoft’s comparison of free web apps and subscriptions.
How to use free Microsoft Office in a browser
- Open microsoft365.com.
- Select Sign in.
- Enter your Microsoft account details.
- Select the app launcher.
- Choose Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.

The web apps are cloud-oriented. Files in OneDrive, team sites, or Outlook Web App attachments are normally accessed through an internet connection. They are suitable for schoolwork, letters, budgets, collaboration, and presentations, but they are not a free download of the full Windows Office suite.
Can you install Microsoft Office desktop apps for free?
Not through a normal personal free Microsoft account. Legitimate routes include:
- Microsoft 365 Personal or Family: includes installable Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other included applications.
- Work or school account: your organization must assign a license and plan that includes desktop apps, and its administrator must allow installation.
- One-time Office purchase: a valid Office license can be linked to your Microsoft account and used to install the licensed version.
- Preinstalled device license: some computers include an Office license or trial. Check what is actually included before assuming the apps are permanently licensed.
A Microsoft 365 Personal subscription is for one person. Family supports the purchaser plus up to five additional people, with 1 TB of OneDrive storage for each shared user, as described in Microsoft’s plan comparison.

Install Microsoft 365 desktop apps with an eligible license
Personal Microsoft account
- Go to m365.cloud.microsoft/apps.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your Microsoft 365 or Office license.
- On the Microsoft 365 Apps page, select Install apps.
- Select Install. Depending on the account or page design, the button may be labelled Install apps.
If you bought a retail product key, redeem it first at microsoft365.com/setup. Sign in or create a Microsoft account, enter the key, and finish the prompts. The key must be associated with the account before the normal installation page can recognize the license.

- Open m365.cloud.microsoft/apps.
- Select Sign in if prompted.
- Select the Install apps drop-down.
- From the home page, select Install apps. If it is not shown, choose Apps in the left navigation pane, then select Install apps.
- Select Microsoft 365 apps.
When the download starts, the browser’s button label may differ: Microsoft Edge uses Run, Chrome may show Setup, and Firefox may show Save File. If Windows asks, “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?”, select Yes.
When installation completes, Microsoft displays You’re all set! Office is installed now. Select Close.
Activate the installed apps
- Select the Windows Start button.
- Type Word, Excel, or another installed Office app.
- Open the app from the search results.
- Accept the license agreement and sign in if requested.
Microsoft normally installs 64-bit Office unless it detects an existing 32-bit Microsoft 365 or Office installation, or a 32-bit standalone application such as Project or Visio. Moving from 32-bit to 64-bit requires uninstalling Microsoft 365 first, including applicable standalone apps. See Microsoft’s installation instructions.
Windows 10 versus Windows 11
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The operating system still runs, but Microsoft no longer provides normal technical support, software updates, or security updates for Windows 10, according to its unsupported Windows guidance.
This does not mean that Microsoft 365 desktop apps immediately stop opening. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 security updates on Windows 10 continue for three years after Windows 10 support ended, through October 10, 2028. During that bridge period, Microsoft does not provide new features or normal support for using Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10. The configuration is outside the normal supported-Windows setup, so Windows 10-related performance or reliability problems may not be supported. Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. An eligible Windows 10 PC can still upgrade to Windows 11 for free, but it must meet Windows 11 hardware requirements. Unsupported older Windows versions do not have a general free upgrade path directly to Windows 10 or Windows 11, according to Microsoft.
The OneDrive desktop app has a separate Windows 10 timeline: Microsoft says updates continue on Windows 10 version 22H2 through October 10, 2028, while updates for older Windows 10 versions stop after August 15, 2026. The app may continue functioning on those older versions. See Microsoft’s guidance.

These dates are listed in Microsoft’s supported products information. Office 2021 and Office 2024 may continue running on Windows 10, but Windows 11 is the supported operating-system target. Problems caused by unsupported Windows 10 may not receive support.

Check for the Microsoft Store installation type
Microsoft is retiring Microsoft 365 Apps installed through the Microsoft Store. Feature updates stopped in October 2025, and security updates end in December 2026. Microsoft instructs affected users to move to the Click-to-Run installation. See Microsoft’s Store installation guidance.
To check which type is installed:
- Open Word or Excel.
- Go to File > Account. Some versions show File > Office Account.
- Under Product information, locate the About button.
- Look for the installation label. Click-to-Run shows “Click-to-Run” with a version and build number; a Store installation shows Microsoft Store with its version and build.
Save your documents and close Office apps before changing installation types. Microsoft’s installer detects and removes the Store version, then installs the Click-to-Run version.
Common problems and safe fixes
There is no “Install apps” button
Your account probably lacks a desktop-app entitlement. With a work or school account, the administrator may not have assigned a license, or the organization’s plan may include only web apps. Check the Microsoft 365 Software page. If the option remains unavailable, ask the organization’s administrator rather than downloading an installer from another site.

A product key does not unlock Office
Entering a key into an installer is not the complete process. Redeem it once at microsoft365.com/setup, sign in, and link the license to your Microsoft account. Then return to the installation page while signed in to that same account.

An organization may block sign-in at a particular location through its security policy. Contact the IT administrator. Do not try to bypass the policy with unofficial activation tools.
Installation is stuck or unusually slow
Microsoft identifies internet connectivity, firewall software, and antivirus software as possible causes. Check the connection and security software configuration. For a slow connection, use Microsoft’s documented offline installer rather than an unofficial mirror.
Windows reports an unsupported operating system
Check that you selected the correct installer. Typical causes include trying to install the Mac build on Windows, the Windows build on a Mac, or installing on a Chromebook or another unsupported mobile device. If the desktop installer cannot be used, the supported fallback is the free browser version at microsoft365.com.
Microsoft 365 becomes unlicensed after being offline
Subscription desktop apps require periodic internet connectivity. If the device has not connected at least once every 39 days, Office can enter reduced-functionality mode and show an Unlicensed Product message. Reconnect to the internet and sign in again to reactivate it. Microsoft describes this requirement in its subscription and free-app comparison.
What to avoid
Do not install “Office activators,” cracked ISO files, KMS scripts, or repacked Office installers. They are not free legal versions of Microsoft Office. They can modify Windows licensing services, disable security protections, add malware, expose saved documents, or leave the computer unable to receive normal updates.

Also be cautious with old advice about free Windows Store Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps. Those Windows mobile/UWP apps are no longer available for download, and support ended on October 14, 2025.

Is Microsoft Word free on Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Word is free to use in a browser through Microsoft 365 for the web. The installable Windows desktop version is not included with a free personal Microsoft account; it requires an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription, Office purchase, or assigned work or school license.
Can I download free Microsoft Office without a product key?
You can use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint online without a product key by signing in at microsoft365.com. You cannot legitimately download and activate the full desktop suite without an eligible license.
Does free Microsoft 365 include 1 TB of OneDrive storage?
No. The free account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage. The 1 TB allowance is associated with Microsoft 365 Personal and with each user who receives access through Microsoft 365 Family.
Will Microsoft Office stop working on Windows 10?
Not immediately. Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025, but Microsoft 365 desktop apps may continue to run and receive security updates through October 10, 2028. Windows 10 is outside Microsoft’s normal supported configuration, so upgrading to an eligible Windows 11 PC is the safer long-term option.
Why can my colleague install Office but I cannot?
Your colleague may have a Microsoft 365 plan that includes desktop apps while your account has only web-app access. In a workplace or school, the administrator must both assign an eligible license and permit installation.
The Bottom Line
The safe free choice is Microsoft 365 for the web: sign in, open the app launcher, and use Word, Excel, or PowerPoint in your browser. It includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage but not the Windows desktop apps.
