For most people, GoFullPage is the best free starting point for capturing an entire webpage in Chrome or another Chromium browser, then saving it as an image or PDF. FireShot is the better fit for scrolling regions, multiple tabs, annotations and broader export choices. Choose GoFullScreenshot when local processing and Chromium-based Edge support matter most, or GoFully when you specifically need OCR and redaction—features its current listing advertises and that you should verify before installing.

Quick comparison

Extension Best for Documented capabilities Important qualification
GoFullPage Simple full-page PNG or PDF capture Captures the entire current page; exports an image or PDF; its listing includes a dated Chromium-focused change log. Downloads and iframe permissions may be requested for particular functions.
FireShot Editing, scrolling areas and batch work Full-page and scrolling-area capture, capture-all-tabs, PDF export with direct links, annotations, blur/effects, and PNG, GIF, JPEG and BMP output. The listing separates free functions from Pro features.
GoFullScreenshot Local handling and Edge compatibility Full-page, visible-area and select-area screenshots; supports Chromium-based Microsoft Edge. Its documentation says Chrome blocks chrome:// pages, the Chrome Web Store, extension pages and the built-in PDF viewer.
GoFully OCR and redaction workflows The listing advertises client-side OCR, annotation, blur/pixelate/blackout redaction, local capture history, PNG/JPG/WebP/PDF export and offline operation. These are vendor listing claims, not independent performance results; check the current listing.

How to capture a full webpage in Chrome

Before installing

  • Install from the current Chrome Web Store listing and read the permission warning and privacy disclosure.
  • Keep the page in the tab you want to capture. Log in first if the page requires authentication.
  • For very long or dynamically loaded pages, scroll through the page once so lazy content has a chance to load.

GoFullPage procedure

  1. Open the target page in Chrome or another Chromium browser.
  2. Click the GoFullPage toolbar action. If it is hidden, open the Extensions menu and pin it.
  3. Allow the extension to scroll and stitch the page. Do not close or navigate the tab while it works.
  4. Use the resulting preview to download an image or PDF.

GoFullPage’s official listing describes the core action as capturing the current page in its entirety and reliably. Its FAQ explains that Chromium browsers are supported and that Downloads and iframe permissions are requested for specific functions. A dated change log is useful evidence that Chromium edge cases continue to receive fixes, but it is not an independent guarantee for every site.

FireShot procedure

  1. Open the page and invoke FireShot from the toolbar.
  2. Choose the full-page option, a scrolling-area option, or the command for capturing all tabs.
  3. Review the capture, add annotations or blur/effects if needed, and select an export format.
  4. For a PDF, use its PDF export workflow; the official listing documents direct links in generated PDFs.

FireShot’s documented formats include PNG, GIF, JPEG and BMP, alongside PDF. Confirm which tools are available in the free edition before planning a batch workflow because the listing distinguishes free and Pro capabilities.

GoFullScreenshot or GoFully

Use GoFullScreenshot when you want full-page, visible-area or selected-area captures and a workflow centered on local handling. Its vendor documentation explicitly includes Chromium-based Microsoft Edge. Use GoFully when OCR, annotation, pixelation or blackout redaction are central; treat offline operation, client-side OCR and local history as claims to verify in the current store listing rather than as independently tested guarantees.

Why a capture can fail

Browser-controlled and restricted pages

Extensions cannot obtain ordinary page access everywhere. Common exclusions include chrome:// URLs, the Chrome Web Store, extension pages and Chrome’s built-in PDF viewer. GoFullScreenshot documents these restrictions explicitly. A page that looks like a normal website may still be rendered by a browser-controlled viewer, so trying another extension will not necessarily remove the restriction.

Permission model

Chrome’s activeTab permission gives an extension temporary access to the active tab after a user gesture such as clicking its action; access is revoked after navigation or tab closure. Chrome’s tabs API requires either activeTab or all_urls for visible-tab capture. Before installation, inspect the permission warning and the extension’s privacy disclosure. Chrome Web Store Help explains that permission warnings correspond to the data or capabilities an extension may access.

Long, dynamic or embedded pages

  • Lazy images: images may load only when scrolled into view, producing blank areas in a stitched result.
  • Sticky headers: a fixed navigation bar can appear repeatedly as the extension scrolls.
  • Embedded frames: cross-origin or permission-limited iframes may be omitted.
  • Animations and live data: different sections can represent different moments in time.
  • Very tall documents: stitching can exceed browser memory or image-size limits.

Wait for the page to settle, dismiss overlays, and retry after a full manual scroll. If only one component is wrong, capture that component separately or use a scrolling-area tool rather than repeatedly recapturing the entire document.

Privacy and permissions checklist

  • Read the store’s permission warning before clicking Add to Chrome.
  • Open the developer’s privacy disclosure and determine whether page content is processed locally or sent to a server.
  • Use a separate browser profile for confidential work if you do not need the extension on every account.
  • Remove extensions you no longer use and review permissions after updates.
  • Do not assume that a “local” or “offline” label proves every feature is local; verify the current listing and behavior.

GoFullScreenshot’s vendor materials emphasize local handling and no uploads. GoFully’s listing advertises local capture history and client-side OCR. Those statements describe vendor documentation, not an independent audit.

Choosing by workflow

One page, one image or PDF

Start with GoFullPage. It has the narrowest, clearest documented purpose and is the least complicated choice for a normal article or landing page.

Several tabs or a marked-up deliverable

Choose FireShot if capture-all-tabs, scrolling regions, annotations, blur/effects or PDF links are more important than a minimal interface.

Privacy-sensitive local work

Consider GoFullScreenshot, while still reviewing its permissions and privacy disclosure. Its documentation specifically emphasizes local processing and Chromium Edge support.

OCR or redaction

GoFully is the candidate whose current listing advertises OCR and blur, pixelate and blackout tools. Verify that those functions remain available in the edition you install.

  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.

Improving reliability and output quality

  • Use a stable viewport and zoom level before capture; changing either during stitching can misalign sections.
  • Close cookie banners, chat bubbles and newsletter popups manually when the extension does not remove them.
  • Allow fonts, images and client-rendered sections to finish loading before invoking the tool.
  • For a page with a fixed header, compare the first and second screenfuls and crop repeated material in an editor.
  • Prefer PDF when selectable text and links matter; prefer PNG, JPG, WebP or another image export when pixel fidelity and easy embedding matter.
  • For confidential material, avoid extensions whose data practices you cannot understand from their current disclosure.

Troubleshooting

The toolbar action does nothing

Check that the tab is not a restricted page, then reload the page and invoke the extension again. Browser-controlled pages such as chrome://, the Web Store, extension pages and the built-in PDF viewer are expected limits, not ordinary loading errors.

The result is blank or incomplete

Wait for network activity and lazy images to finish, scroll manually once, and retry. Disable a conflicting content blocker temporarily. If one iframe remains missing, the frame may be cross-origin or outside the extension’s permissions.

Sticky elements repeat down the image

Hide or dismiss the fixed element before capture if the extension offers no exclusion control. Otherwise capture the scrolling region and crop the repeated header afterward.

The browser becomes slow or the image will not save

Extremely tall pages can consume substantial memory. Capture sections, reduce the page’s rendered content, or export to PDF where appropriate. Close other heavy tabs and retry.

Cost, performance and reliability considerations

Browser extensions are convenient for an occasional manual capture and keep the work in the browser, but results depend on page state, browser permissions and local memory. They also require a person to repeat the action. An API is better for scheduled, bulk or reproducible captures: it can set waits, viewport/device, headers, cookies, blocking rules and output format explicitly. ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots; failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and its response identifies billing and page verdict headers. For a small manual workload, the extensions above may be sufficient; for automation, compare the time spent maintaining browser setup with the API’s stated plan limits.

FAQ

Can I capture a Chrome Web Store page?

No. Chrome restricts extension access to the Web Store and other browser-controlled pages, so a full-page extension cannot override that boundary.

Will a full-page extension capture content behind a login?

It can capture what is visible in your authenticated tab, subject to the extension’s permissions and the site’s rendering behavior. Never grant access without reviewing the privacy disclosure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is PDF always better than PNG?

No. PDF is preferable for selectable text, links and multipage documents; an image is usually simpler for visual comparison, embedding or design review.

The Bottom Line

Choose GoFullPage for the simplest free full-page capture, FireShot for editing and multi-tab workflows, GoFullScreenshot for a locally focused option, and GoFully for advertised OCR and redaction.
