London-based Foundational announced on 1 October 2026 that it had emerged from stealth with £8.2 million in pre-seed funding to commercialize satellite laser ranging (SLR). Founded in 2025 by CEO Hira Virdee and CTO Dave Gooding, the company combines spacecraft-mounted laser retroreflectors, ground stations and its Origin data platform. Its product page lists raw ranging data as operational; orbit products and validation are still in development.
What is satellite laser ranging?
Satellite laser ranging measures the distance between a ground station and a satellite. The station sends a short laser pulse toward a retroreflector on the spacecraft, then measures how long the returned light takes to arrive. Knowing the speed of light and the round-trip time lets the system calculate distance.

The technique can provide highly precise range measurements, but a useful service depends on more than the measurement itself: spacecraft need suitable reflectors, stations must be able to range them, and users need the resulting data in a form they can use.
How does Foundational track satellites?
Foundational describes its offering as three connected elements: hardware aboard spacecraft, a ground-based ranging network and software for delivering data. The company says its automated ground stations are eye-safe and that the service can range satellites with millimetre-level precision. Those precision and cost claims come from the company and its investor announcement; the sources reviewed do not provide independent test results.

Spacecraft reflectors
A retroreflector returns incoming light toward its source, allowing a ground station to time the returning pulse. Foundational lists three reflector product lines. Its product page describes its passive reflectors as flight-proven at TRL-9 and says they require no power, electronics or pointing. The company also identifies a uniquely identifiable reflector as in development.
Ground stations
The ground network sends pulses and receives their returns. Foundational pitches this as “SLR-as-a-service,” intended to give satellite operators access to ranging without each operator having to build and run its own complete station network. The investor announcement says the stations cost 10–30× less than legacy stations; that is a company-stated comparison, not an independently verified benchmark in the material available here.

Origin data platform
Origin is Foundational’s online platform for accessing ranging data. The product page lists normal-point and full-rate data, with TDM, CRD and JSON formats, and invites prospective users to request access and identify the orbits and data objects they are interested in.
There is an important distinction between measurements and derived products: the page marks raw ranging data operational, while orbit determination products and validation are marked in development. Those latter capabilities should not be treated as generally available on the strength of the current product listing.

What did Foundational announce?
On 1 October 2026, Foundational announced its emergence from stealth and a £8.2 million pre-seed round. Final Frontier, BACKED, Inflection, Adjacent and Type One Ventures participated, according to the Final Frontier announcement. The stated uses of the funding are to expand the ground-station network, bring more space-hardware manufacturing in-house, scale reflector production and further develop Origin.
Final Frontier called the round Europe’s largest space-technology pre-seed round to date. That superlative is the investor’s characterization of the announcement, rather than an independently established ranking here.

- ADD GPS FOR THE MOST ACCURATE ALIGNMENT: Upgrade your Celestron computerized telescope with ultra-precise 16-channel GPS time, date, and location data.
- SAVE TIME ALIGNING YOUR SCOPE: Instead of entering the approximate time, date, and location into your hand control manually, SkySync obtains this information from orbiting global positioning satellites, saving you time in the field.
- GREAT FOR ASTROIMAGING: SkySync will improve your alignment—a difference you can see in your astroimages.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING TELESCOPE: Simply plug into your hand control or any available AUX port on your telescope mount. Work with all non-GPS Celestron computerized telescopes.
- MOUNTING STRAP INCLUDED: We’ve provided a handy Velcro strap to secure the SkySync GPS unit to one of your telescope’s tripod legs, safely out of the way.
The announcement says Foundational builds on laser-ranging technology originally developed at Lumi Space, which Virdee founded in 2018 with support from ESA and the UK Space Agency. It names satellite constellation operators, ESA and UK government departments and agencies among its customers and partners.
Deployment figures are company-reported
Final Frontier’s announcement says 16 Foundational retroreflectors are in orbit across three product lines, around 60 more are awaiting launch, and hundreds of additional reflectors are under discussion with prospective customers. These figures describe the company’s claims in the announcement; they are not independently verified deployment counts in the sources reviewed.

Why does the company say the capability matters?
Final Frontier’s announcement cites the European Space Agency’s 2026 Space Environment Report, which put the number of objects tracked in orbit at around 45,000 at the end of 2025 and estimated 1.5 million pieces of debris measuring between 1 cm and 10 cm. The figures describe the orbital environment, not a performance result for Foundational’s service.
Virdee argued in the announcement that SLR’s precision has historically been difficult and costly to deploy at scale. Final Frontier founding partner Niels Vejrup Carlsen framed precise location as important to safely operating, insuring and defending space infrastructure. Those are the speakers’ stated rationales for the business; the announcement does not establish that Foundational alone can solve the broader debris-tracking challenge.
When will Foundational’s satellite laser ranging service launch?
Sesamers reported on 2 October 2026 that the first three to four automated stations, distributed across four continents, were expected to bring the service online in early 2027, with 10 to 20 stations planned over the coming years. Treat this as a reported expectation, not a confirmed launch date: the official product page and investor announcement reviewed do not state a service launch date.
The product status currently stated on Foundational’s page is more specific than that schedule: raw ranging data is operational, while orbit products and validation remain in development. That distinction matters for prospective users assessing what is available now versus what is planned.
