Debian stable and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS both publish Fotoxx packages, but package versions, dependencies and supported CPU architectures depend on the distribution release. Install the package for your release, then start with a simple browse-edit-save workflow before moving to metadata searches or batch jobs.
What Fotoxx does
Fotoxx combines a thumbnail-based photo library with editing and collection-management tools. The Debian manual documents:
- Folder browsing and thumbnail galleries
- RAW conversion, including single-file and batch conversion
- Crop, resize, rotate, tonal adjustment and retouching tools
- Area selection, panoramas and HDR workflows
- Albums and slideshows
- Metadata entry and searches using information such as dates, tags, ratings, captions and location data
- Batch operations and custom-script support
Its documented output formats include JPEG, TIFF at 8 or 16 bits per color, and PNG at 8 or 16 bits. Check the help included with your installed release for exact camera-format support and any feature changes. Debian Fotoxx manual
The manual describes saving edits as new files or versions while retaining the originals by default. Treat that as the documented default for the relevant version and settings, not as a substitute for maintaining your own backup.

Check availability before installing
Package information is release-specific. Debian’s stable listing shows the Fotoxx package, dependencies and available architectures for Debian stable; Ubuntu’s Noble listing provides the equivalent information for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.
| Distribution release | Package information | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Debian stable | Debian stable Fotoxx package | Package version, dependencies and architecture support for your installed stable release |
| Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble) | Ubuntu Noble Fotoxx package | Package version, dependencies and architecture support for Noble |
The available sources do not establish one universal upstream installation procedure, current upstream version, system-requirement list or exhaustive camera compatibility matrix. If you use another distribution, search its own repositories for fotoxx and read that release’s package information.
Install Fotoxx from a Linux package repository
Use your distribution’s normal package manager rather than copying Debian or Ubuntu dependencies to another Linux family.

Debian or Ubuntu
- Confirm that your release lists Fotoxx in its package repository using the applicable package page above.
- Refresh package metadata in a terminal:
sudo apt update. - Install the repository package:
sudo apt install fotoxx. - After installation, open your desktop application menu and search for Fotoxx. You can also launch it by entering
fotoxxin a terminal.
If APT reports that the package cannot be found, check the release name, enabled repositories, package architecture and network configuration. Do not assume a command or dependency list that works on Debian stable will be identical on Ubuntu, another Ubuntu release or a different distribution.

Learn the basic browse-edit-save workflow
1. Open a photo folder
Start Fotoxx and open a folder containing images. Use the thumbnail gallery to scan the collection, select an image and open it for a larger view. Begin with a folder you can safely work with while learning the interface.

- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
2. Make one simple change
Try a crop, rotation or basic tonal adjustment. Compare the adjusted view with the original before committing to a saved result. The exact menu names can vary by installed release, so use the application’s contextual help when a control is unclear.
3. Save a new version
Save the result as a new file or version so the original remains available under Fotoxx’s documented default behavior. Keep an independent backup of important photographs, because version retention inside an application is not the same as backup protection.

4. Add organization information
When the basic edit cycle is comfortable, inspect metadata fields and add or review dates, tags, ratings, captions or location information. Consistent metadata makes later searches substantially more useful.

5. Search the collection
Use metadata search to narrow a large library by the information your files actually contain. A search for a tag or rating will not find images that were never given that metadata, and camera-specific metadata behavior should be checked in your installed version.
6. Move to batch and advanced tools
After learning single-image editing, explore batch RAW conversion, other batch operations, panoramas, HDR, albums and slideshows. Batch work can affect many files at once, so test it on copies or a small selection first.

Is Fotoxx a good fit for your library?
- Good fit: you want a Linux desktop tool that combines folder browsing, editing, metadata, search and batch operations in one application.
- Check first: your distribution release, CPU architecture, repository availability and the RAW formats produced by your cameras.
- Use caution: advanced batch processing and compositing are better approached after you understand how your version saves files and versions.
- Plan separately: application-level original retention does not replace a backup strategy for the underlying photo library.
Bottom line
Fotoxx is a capable Linux photo manager and editor when its repository package is available for your release. Verify release-specific package details, install fotoxx through the distribution package manager, then learn the thumbnail, edit and new-version workflow before using metadata searches or batch tools. The installed program’s F1 help is the authoritative place to resolve version-specific questions.
