Forza Horizon 5 and Nioh are not substitutes within the same genre. They overlap in one important design idea: both turn skill-based play into long-term progression and collection. Forza Horizon 5 applies that structure to free-roam driving, events, cars and festival activities in Mexico. Nioh applies it to demanding samurai combat, mission rewards, equipment, skills and character builds in Sengoku-era Japan.
Choose Forza Horizon 5 for exploration, car variety, racing with other players and a flexible difficulty curve. Choose Nioh or Nioh 2 for precise attacks, defensive timing, loot experimentation and encounters that make combat mastery the main objective.

Are Forza Horizon 5 and Nioh actually comparable?
Only at the level of structure, not moment-to-moment genre. Both games give you a repeatable skill challenge, then let you improve a collection or build so that later activities open up. That is the useful bridge between them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesForza Horizon 5 is an open-world driving game. Xbox describes it as an evolving Mexico landscape with “limitless driving action” in hundreds of cars. You travel between activities, race on different surfaces, discover roads and locations, complete Horizon Story missions, earn rewards and tune vehicles. Driving is the verb that connects nearly everything.

- Defy death and unleash your darkness. In this expansive collection, journey through sengoku-era Japan to face nightmarish foes and legendary warriors in blisteringly fast hardcore combat.
- Master the way of the Samurai in Nioh, then unleash your inner darkness in Nioh 2 - each expertly remastered and enhanced for PS5.
- Discover the complete Nioh saga with all six major expansions included. Battle the yoke threat at a stunning 120FPS with ultra-fast load times.
Nioh is a mission-based action RPG. PlayStation’s description of The Nioh Collection places both remastered games in Sengoku-era Japan, where you face human warriors and supernatural yokai in fast, hardcore combat. Team NINJA describes Nioh 2 as a brutal masocore action RPG. You select weapons, learn skills, manage stamina and equipment, and repeat missions until execution and build choices improve.
Therefore, a player asking “Is Forza Horizon like Nioh?” should expect a design comparison rather than a genre match. Forza offers driving mastery inside a broad, social sandbox; Nioh offers combat mastery inside authored missions.

How Forza Horizon 5 plays
Driving and discovery are the core loop
You begin by moving through Mexico rather than selecting a sequence of isolated races from a menu. Roads, trails and off-road routes connect events and points of interest. A typical session can alternate between a story chapter, a race, a detour to discover a road, a car change and a multiplayer activity without leaving the main world.
The driving challenge is broader than simply holding the accelerator. Surface changes, corners, jumps and traffic ask you to choose a line, brake at the right point and control weight transfer. Drifting and off-road driving reward different inputs from high-speed road racing. The game’s range of assists lets a new player reduce the number of techniques required at first, then remove assistance as confidence grows.
Cars are the progression language
Forza’s long-term rewards are expressed through vehicles and activities. Xbox presents the game as containing hundreds of cars, while the official feature page says the game is now complete with more than 40 content updates. That update total is a statement on the live official page and can change as the page is revised; it is not a promise of a particular future release schedule.
Cars are not interchangeable skins. Different drivetrains, weight, power delivery and handling characteristics change how a route feels. You can move between a road-focused car, an off-road vehicle and a drift-oriented setup, then tune a chosen vehicle for a particular event. Rewards and festival activities provide reasons to keep trying different combinations rather than treating the first successful car as a permanent answer.
Events give the open world structure
Races, Horizon Story missions and other festival activities create goals inside the free-roam map. This structure suits players who want to decide what to do next: continue a story, chase a reward, explore an unfamiliar road or join friends. It also means the game does not demand that every session be a serious time trial. You can make progress through several kinds of activity.
Multiplayer is part of the identity
Convoys and multiplayer activities are official features, so Forza can function as a shared driving space as well as a solo campaign. Social play changes the value of the open map: a route can become a group cruise, and an event can be approached as friendly competition rather than a personal best. The exact activity availability can vary by platform, account and edition, so check the current platform listing before purchase.

How Nioh and Nioh 2 play
Combat is the repeated test
Nioh puts combat encounters at the center of nearly every meaningful decision. You read enemy distance and attack timing, choose when to strike, defend or reposition, and manage the stamina-like resource that limits how long you can continue attacking or blocking. Human opponents and yokai demand different responses, so a successful approach in one mission may not transfer unchanged to the next.
PlayStation’s official wording calls the collection’s combat “blisteringly fast hardcore combat,” while Team NINJA calls Nioh 2 a brutal masocore action RPG. Those descriptions establish the intended challenge, but they do not create a universal numerical difficulty ranking against Forza. A highly competitive Forza driver can face demanding technical play; the games simply test different skills.
Missions replace the open-world drive
Nioh is organized around missions and battlefields rather than a continuous driving sandbox. You enter a combat area, learn its routes and threats, fight through encounters and collect rewards. Returning to a mission can be purposeful: you may be testing a weapon, seeking equipment, practicing a dangerous encounter or trying a different build.

There is less downtime between decisions, and the environment is designed around ambushes, enemy placement and combat routes rather than free-form travel. If you want to wander through a landscape with no combat objective, Forza is the better fit.
Build development is the progression language
Nioh’s collection loop concerns weapons, armor, skills, stats, loot and mission rewards. Equipment changes how your character approaches an encounter, while skill choices expand the attacks and defensive options available to you. The result is a build-development game: improvement comes both from your own execution and from assembling tools that support a chosen style.
The official descriptions establish these systems, but they do not establish a fixed number of viable builds or universal loot probabilities. Treat claims about exact drop rates, guaranteed items or a definitive best build cautiously unless they are tied to a specific version and source.
Where the skill systems overlap—and where they do not
| Skill question | Forza Horizon 5 | Nioh |
|---|---|---|
| What must you read? | Corner shape, surface, speed, braking distance and traffic | Enemy animation, range, attack timing, stamina and openings |
| What is the cost of a mistake? | Lost time, a missed line, a collision or a lower race result | Damage, a broken rhythm, a lost encounter and potentially a failed mission attempt |
| How do you improve? | Practice lines, adjust assists, tune the car and learn each route | Practice timing, learn enemy patterns, refine equipment and change skills or weapons |
| What carries between activities? | Vehicle collection, driving knowledge, tuning choices and earned rewards | Character development, equipment, skills, stats and combat knowledge |
The overlap is the feedback loop: perform better, earn or unlock more options, then use those options to attempt a wider or harder set of activities. The feel is different because Forza’s feedback is measured in speed and control, while Nioh’s is measured in survival, openings and efficient combat decisions.

Progression and collection: cars versus loot
Forza rewards breadth and experimentation
Forza’s car collection supports a broad range of activities. A vehicle that feels stable on paved roads may be less suitable for rough terrain; another may be selected because its handling makes a technical route easier to learn. Tuning adds another layer without requiring every player to become an engineer: you can use an existing setup, make targeted changes or pursue a more specialized configuration.

- Every title available on Playstation 5 will support 4K resolution and deliver stunning graphics, fast-paced combat with 120fps frame gameplay, ultra-fast load times, and the ability to transfer data from the PS4 to resume the adventure where you left off.
Because the world is continuous, progression often feels like expanding your options for movement. A new car can change which events are comfortable, how you explore and how you participate with a convoy.
Nioh rewards depth and specialization
Nioh’s equipment loop is more granular. Weapons and armor interact with skills, stats and mission rewards, so the question is not only “What did I collect?” but also “Does this support the way I fight?” Loot can encourage experimentation, and a new ability can change the timing or range of an encounter.
That depth also creates management overhead. You may need to compare equipment, decide what to keep and learn which changes matter to your current build. Players who enjoy optimizing a character will find that satisfying; players who want to get into a car and drive immediately may find it slower than Forza’s collection loop.
Difficulty, accessibility and learning curve
Forza offers multiple ways to shape the driving challenge. Driving assists, vehicle choice and event settings let you begin with a forgiving setup, then increase the technical demand as you learn. The game can still become demanding when you pursue cleaner lines, faster times or more competitive racing, but its basic loop does not require mastery before exploration is enjoyable.
Nioh foregrounds mastery more directly. The official “hardcore” and “brutal” language signals that understanding combat systems is not optional flavor. You must learn when to commit, when to defend and how your selected tools interact with enemies. Better equipment can help, but it does not replace learning the encounter’s timing.
Do not reduce this difference to “Forza is easy and Nioh is hard.” They measure different abilities and have no shared official difficulty scale. Forza can be technically exacting at high levels; Nioh makes combat precision the central gate to progress.
Setting, tone and player fantasy
Forza’s fantasy is mobility and participation in a large automotive festival. Mexico is presented as a bright, evolving landscape for travel, discovery and racing. The emotional rhythm is open: you can move quickly between planned events or simply drive and see what the map offers.
Nioh’s fantasy is survival and identity in a dark version of Sengoku-era Japan. Human warriors, yokai, weapons and armor reinforce the idea that your character is defined by how they fight. The atmosphere is more dangerous and concentrated, and the game’s supernatural elements sit alongside its historical setting.

If the appeal of a game is primarily the place you inhabit, these choices are decisive. Forza offers a travel-and-car fantasy; Nioh offers a samurai-and-monster fantasy.

Forza is the clearer choice for organized social driving. Its official feature set includes convoys and multiplayer activities, so playing with friends is part of the product’s intended use rather than an incidental option.
The cited Nioh product pages emphasize campaign combat. They do not provide enough information to generalize about every online mode, player-count limit or cooperative feature across Nioh, Nioh 2 and every edition. If online cooperation is a purchase requirement, confirm the exact edition’s current support instead of assuming that Nioh offers the same social structure as Forza.

Forza Horizon 5
The current Xbox product page displays Xbox, PC, Steam and PlayStation platform badges. Availability, edition contents and online requirements can vary by region and storefront, so check the listing shown for your account and country. The relevant product name for purchasing is Forza Horizon 5.
The Nioh Collection
The Nioh Collection is a PS5 package containing remastered Nioh and Nioh 2. PlayStation’s 2020 announcement states that the PS5 versions support up to 120 FPS gameplay when the display supports the required refresh rate. “Up to” is important: the setting depends on the console version, display and selected performance mode, and it does not mean every scene or setup runs at 120 frames per second.
The relevant product name for that package is Nioh Collection PS5. Confirm whether you are buying the collection or an individual game, and verify regional edition details before checkout.
Which game should you choose?
Choose Forza Horizon 5 if you want:
- A continuous open world where driving is also your way of exploring.
- A large car selection and reasons to switch between vehicle types.
- Races, story missions, festival activities and free-roam discovery in one map.
- Driving assists that let you adjust the learning curve.
- Convoys and multiplayer driving as a major part of the experience.
- A bright festival-and-travel tone rather than dark fantasy.
Choose Nioh or Nioh 2 if you want:
- Combat that rewards spacing, timing, attack selection and defense.
- Mission-based progression instead of a continuous sandbox.
- Weapons, armor, skills, stats and loot that support build experimentation.
- Human and yokai enemies in a dark Sengoku-era fantasy setting.
- A game whose official identity emphasizes hardcore or brutal action.
- Repeated practice against encounters as the main route to improvement.
Use this tie-breaker
- If your ideal session starts with “Where should I drive?” choose Forza.
- If it starts with “How do I defeat this enemy or improve this build?” choose Nioh.
- If you mainly want to play with friends in a shared driving space, choose Forza.
- If you prefer focused missions and do not mind repeating encounters to learn them, choose Nioh.
- If you want both types of progression, remember that owning one does not replace the other: a car collection cannot reproduce Nioh’s combat, and Nioh’s loot cannot reproduce Forza’s free-roam driving.
What to check before buying
- Platform: Confirm that the listed Xbox, PC, Steam or PlayStation version is available in your region for Forza, and that you have a PS5-compatible edition for The Nioh Collection.
- Edition: Check whether you are purchasing Forza Horizon 5, an individual Nioh game or the two-game Nioh Collection.
- Display: For the Nioh Collection’s advertised performance options, verify that your PS5 display supports the relevant refresh rate; the official wording is “up to 120 FPS.”
- Online expectations: Treat Forza’s convoy and multiplayer features as a core attraction, but verify the exact online support for the Nioh edition you are considering.
- Preferred challenge: Decide whether you want driving precision with adjustable assists or combat precision where learning enemy behavior is central.
Verdict
Forza Horizon 5 and Nioh are best understood as two different applications of progression-plus-mastery design. Forza turns that idea into an open-world driving festival built around cars, routes, events and social exploration. Nioh turns it into a demanding action RPG built around missions, combat timing, loot and character development. They are comparable enough to clarify what you value, but not interchangeable: choose the driving sandbox for movement and shared exploration, or the samurai action RPG for focused combat and build experimentation.
