Neither FortiGate nor Cisco Firepower is a universal winner for a small business. FortiGate may suit teams seeking an integrated security-and-networking platform with SD-WAN and FortiGuard services; Cisco Firepower 1000 may suit SMBs that want Cisco’s management choices and already have Cisco expertise. The right choice depends on the exact appliance, security features enabled, management approach, subscriptions, support, and deployment costs.
Which models are aimed at small businesses?
Both vendors offer physical appliances for smaller organizations. Fortinet’s small-business lineup includes models from the FortiGate 30G through the 200G, including the 50G. Cisco positions its Firepower 1000 family for small and midsize businesses and describes the desktop Firepower 1010 as tailored to small businesses. Cisco also lists the 1120 as a small-business model.
The following vendor-published figures are useful starting points for sizing, not a controlled performance comparison. Fortinet and Cisco use different metric labels and test contexts.
| Model | Published specifications | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Fortinet FortiGate 50G | Five GE RJ45 interfaces; 1,100 Mbps threat-protection throughput on Fortinet’s SMB page. A June 2025 product matrix lists 1.1 Gbps threat-protection throughput and 1.25 Gbps NGFW throughput under its enterprise-mix labels. | Fortinet small-business page; Fortinet product matrix and services |
| Cisco Firepower 1010 | 0.9 Gbps firewall throughput, 900 Mbps IPS throughput, 0.4 Gbps IPsec VPN throughput, up to 75 VPN peers, and eight RJ45 ports. | Cisco Firepower 1000 |
| Cisco Firepower 1120 | 2.3 Gbps firewall throughput, 2.6 Gbps IPS throughput, 1.2 Gbps IPsec VPN throughput, and up to 150 VPN peers. | Cisco Firepower 1000 |
How should you compare performance and ports?
Do not conclude that one vendor is faster from the figures above. Fortinet’s 50G threat-protection result and Cisco’s 1010 firewall or IPS results are differently labeled; the available figures do not establish equivalent tests or enabled functions. Fortinet’s product matrices separately report firewall, IPS, NGFW, and threat-protection throughput. Treat each published number as a prompt for a configuration-specific sizing discussion, not as a head-to-head benchmark.

Start with the traffic the firewall must inspect, the security features you intend to enable, and the WAN capacity you expect to use. Then check port count and type, required uplinks or PoE, VPN demand, and likely growth. A model with sufficient headline firewall throughput may not meet needs once the intended inspection and remote-access features are enabled. Ask each vendor or reseller for estimates tied to the same traffic assumptions and configuration.
What networking and remote-access features matter?
Fortinet presents FortiGate as combining security and networking, and highlights SD-WAN, VPN, ZTNA, FortiGuard services, and centralized management. That may fit a business trying to consolidate branch connectivity and security around one platform.

Cisco’s Firepower 1000 materials describe the appliance family and its VPN capabilities. The published 1010 and 1120 VPN throughput and peer figures above can help frame remote-access requirements, but they do not replace checking the exact software, license, and deployment configuration. If SD-WAN, ZTNA, or a particular remote-access workflow is essential, verify its availability and operating requirements for the specific model and software you plan to buy.
Which management approach fits your team?
Cisco documents cloud-delivered, on-premises, and on-box management options for Firepower 1000. Fortinet promotes centralized management and FortiGate Cloud alongside its appliances. Availability and suitability depend on the chosen products and configuration, so compare the actual administration workflow rather than assuming that one approach is inherently easier.

- Choose the management option your staff can operate and maintain reliably.
- Account for any management service or appliance, the skills needed to deploy it, and how it fits existing network operations.
- Consider the environment already in place: a team experienced with Cisco may find Firepower the more natural operational fit, while a team standardized on Fortinet may favor FortiGate. These are fit considerations, not proof of superior performance.
How do subscriptions, licensing, and total cost compare?
Hardware specifications alone do not determine the cost or protection you receive. Fortinet offers FortiGuard services à la carte and in bundles; match the included services to the protections the business actually needs. Cisco’s Firepower 1010 license guide identifies Essentials as required and lists IPS, Malware Defense, URL Filtering, and Secure Client as license categories. Cisco ordering information describes threat-service components with one-, three-, and five-year terms. Confirm the current SKU, included services, and terms for your region before ordering.
Cisco’s older Small Business Edition overview describes a particular hardware-and-software offer; it does not establish that the offer, SKU, or included services remain current in every region. No comparable current transaction prices or total-cost quotes are established here, so there is no sound basis for declaring either vendor cheaper.

How to make the decision
- Define the workload. Record WAN speed, typical and peak traffic, the inspection features to enable, VPN users or peers, branch needs, and growth expectations.
- Shortlist exact models. Compare the FortiGate model and Firepower model against that workload, including interfaces and any PoE or uplink requirements.
- Confirm configured performance. Ask for performance estimates using the same traffic assumptions and enabled security features. Do not compare unlike vendor metrics as if they were measured identically.
- Map services and licenses. List required protections, management options, support, subscription term, and renewal costs for each proposed configuration.
- Include operational fit. Evaluate staff experience, existing equipment and policies, deployment effort, and who will maintain the firewall.
- Compare complete quotes. Use configuration-specific quotes for your region, covering hardware through installation and recurring terms, before selecting a vendor.
