Former Rockstar open-world designer Jérémy Hartvick believes a Grand Theft Auto VI version for Nintendo Switch 2 may not make sense for Rockstar, citing audience fit and the risk of a compromised experience. That is Hartvick’s opinion—not an announcement from Rockstar. The company’s official page currently lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a November 19, 2026 release date; it does not list Switch 2.

What did the former Rockstar designer say?

In an interview with the YouTube channel Kiwi Talkz, Hartvick said, “I don’t believe it even makes sense.” Nintendo Wire’s October 2, 2026 report attributes the remarks to him and identifies him as a former open-world designer.

His central argument was about audience overlap: he questioned whether GTA VI’s audience substantially overlaps with Switch players and suggested that a GTA fan would probably buy the platform on which the game is released. He also raised the risk of Rockstar delivering a compromised experience if it made a Switch 2 version when players might instead buy a PS5 to play the game. Nintendo Wire’s report reproduces these remarks.

Hartvick did not describe a Switch 2 port as wholly implausible. In the discussion, he acknowledged economic pressures could make one conceivable, but said he did not think Rockstar would pursue it now. He suggested streaming as a better fit in his view. These are his assessments, not a confirmed Rockstar strategy. HotHardware also reports the interview’s broad points; it noted that the original interview was members-only at the time of its article.

Is GTA 6 coming to Nintendo Switch 2?

Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, gives November 19, 2026 as the release date, and provides a pre-order path. The page reviewed does not list Nintendo Switch 2.

That means Rockstar has not announced a Switch 2 version on the official page—not that the company has definitively ruled one out. Hartvick’s comments are not a cancellation notice or an official platform decision.

Could Switch 2 technically run Grand Theft Auto VI?

The cited reporting does not include benchmarks, a port analysis, or engineering evidence showing whether a native Switch 2 version could run acceptably. Hartvick’s concern about a potentially compromised experience is not proof that the hardware cannot run the game.

It helps to separate the questions:

  • Technical feasibility: Whether developers could create a version that runs acceptably on Switch 2. The cited coverage does not establish this.
  • Commercial rationale: Whether Rockstar would choose to fund and release that version. Hartvick doubts the audience fit and questions the value of risking compromises.
  • Distribution method: A native port and cloud streaming are different options. Streaming is Hartvick’s suggestion, not a confirmed product plan.

What is confirmed, and what remains uncertain?
