Foot is a fast, lightweight terminal emulator built as a native Wayland application. It is a good fit if you want a keyboard-oriented terminal with modern features and low-overhead design; its optional server mode can also share font and glyph-cache work across multiple windows. There is no independent benchmark figure here to substantiate a particular speed or memory advantage, so treat “lightweight” as the project’s design goal, not a measured guarantee.
What Foot is—and who it suits
Foot is a native Wayland terminal emulator that the project describes as desktop-environment agnostic. It is MIT-licensed open-source software. Its design emphasizes low overhead, a minimal interface, and keyboard-driven use, while still offering features such as scrollback search, URL detection, true color, and Sixel images. Foot is especially worth considering if your desktop session uses Wayland and you want a terminal configured through a text file rather than a graphical settings panel. It is software, not a physical terminal or a required hardware accessory.

How to configure foot.ini
Foot uses a configuration file rather than requiring a settings window. The usual location is ~/.config/foot/foot.ini, equivalent to $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/foot/foot.ini when XDG_CONFIG_HOME is set.

- Find or create the configuration directory: use
$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/foot/if that environment variable is set; otherwise use~/.config/foot/. - Open
foot.ini: edit the file if it exists, or create it in that directory. Distribution packages may include a template. - Choose the settings you need: consult the
foot.ini(5)manual for available options, including configuration areas such as fonts and key bindings.
Foot’s font handling uses fontconfig and supports fonts loadable through FreeType, including bitmap and color-emoji fonts. The project’s documentation is the reference for current configuration options. Foot project documentation
Should you use foot --server and footclient?
In ordinary use, each foot process is a single-window application. With server mode, one Foot process hosts multiple windows, and footclient asks that server to open another window. Because the server shares font and glyph caches, it can avoid repeating some startup work and may reduce memory use when you open multiple windows. Foot server and socket documentation

The shared process is a trade-off, not a free performance improvement: input and output are multiplexed through the server, a busy window can affect others, and a server crash removes every window it hosts. Do you need foot-terminfo for SSH?
Terminfo describes terminal capabilities to shell tools and remote systems. It can matter when using SSH or other remote-terminal workflows: if the remote host does not recognize Foot’s terminal description, some programs may behave incorrectly or provide limited display behavior. How fast and lightweight is Foot?
The project presents Foot as fast and lightweight, but that description does not establish a universal speed ranking or a particular RAM requirement. Debian’s foot.ini(5) manual says Foot “uses a memory mapping trick to implement fast rendering of interactive scrolling.” The same manual states that each terminal window can allocate up to 2 GB of virtual address space (Debian, 2025). Virtual address space is not the same as physical memory in use; the figure does not mean that every window consumes 2 GB of RAM. Debian foot.ini(5) manual
For a practical choice, weigh Wayland integration, feature needs, and your window workflow rather than assuming a benchmark result. The server mode is most relevant when you regularly open several Foot windows and value shared font-cache work; its shared failure and workload effects matter if you need each window isolated in its own process.
