Will you unfold the phone most days? Choose a book-style foldable if you have recurring reasons to use its larger inner screen—for reading, watching video, reviewing documents, or running apps side by side. Choose a conventional large-screen phone if one always-open display already suits your routine and you would rather not own folding hardware. Neither format is the better choice for everyone; the deciding factors are your habits, comfort, local price, and repair coverage.
What changes in everyday use?
A foldable switches between two screen states
A book-style foldable gives you a usable outer screen for ordinary phone tasks and opens to a larger inner display. For example, Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Fold7 with an 8.0-inch main display and a 6.5-inch cover display, while Google lists the Pixel 10 Pro Fold with an 8-inch inner screen and a 6.4-inch outer screen. These are manufacturer specifications, not measures of how comfortable either device will feel in your hand.
The main practical benefit is having a larger workspace available without carrying a separate tablet. Google describes adjustable Split Screen and side-by-side app use on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold; Samsung positions the Fold7’s inner display for multitasking. That can help when you regularly compare information, refer to a document while messaging, or keep two apps visible. If you rarely do those things, the inner screen may be an occasional extra rather than a daily advantage.
A conventional large-screen phone keeps one display ready
A slab-style phone has a single display that is always open and ready to use. Google lists the Pixel 10 Pro XL with a 6.8-inch display, a clear example of the large-screen conventional format. It does not transform into a larger workspace, but it also avoids the hinge and folding display that come with a book-style design.

- MULTITASKING MADE SMARTER WITH AI: Stay one step ahead with AI² that suggests which apps you might need next. Then view those multiple windows side by side on the large screen of your Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra.
- ANY SHOT, ALL THE DETAILS: Dive into the details of any image with our best camera on a foldable smartphone. Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra boasts a 200MP camera — and an upgraded 50MP Ultra Wide lens — for both stunning wide shots and extreme close-ups.
- ELITE CHIPSET. FLUID GRAPHICS: Experience what’s possible with our most advanced Galaxy Z Series processor. From immersive gaming and speedy multitasking to the latest Galaxy AI³ features, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 keeps everything running seamlessly.
- THE BATTERY YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR: It’s the battery you’ve been wanting in a foldable cell phone. Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra packs a powerful ultra-sized⁴ battery in an ultra-slim design. Plus, with Super Fast Charging 2.0⁵, charge up faster than ever before.
Diagonal measurements do not tell the whole comfort story. Aspect ratio, usable viewing area, one-handed reach, and the width and weight of the phone in your pocket or grip all matter. For example, Samsung specifies that the Fold7’s 6.5-inch cover screen has a 21:9 aspect ratio; that number alone does not establish whether it will feel more or less comfortable than another phone.
Which format fits your routine?
| Your regular use | Format to consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Reading, watching video, reviewing documents, or using two apps side by side on a large display most days | Book-style foldable | The inner screen may make those recurring tasks more comfortable or practical. |
| Calls, messaging, browsing, photos, and other typical phone tasks on one large display | Conventional large-screen phone | You get a broad, always-open screen without adding a folding design. |
| You are interested in the inner screen but cannot name a regular task that needs it | Compare specific models in person if possible; do not assume the larger screen alone justifies the choice | Whether the extra workspace earns its place depends on your actual habits. |
For a closer decision, list the tasks you expect to do on the inner screen and how often you do them. Then weigh those benefits against carrying comfort, how you feel about the display crease and hinge, repair or protection terms, and the current price where you live. Folded dimensions, hinge feel, and personal comfort are model-specific; the specifications cited here do not settle them for every buyer.

What should you compare before buying?
- Screen layout: Compare the inner and outer displays, aspect ratios, and how your frequently used apps behave. An 8-inch diagonal does not by itself establish how much usable space a particular app will provide.
- Carry and grip: Check the exact model’s folded dimensions and weight, and consider your pocket, bag, and preferred grip. Samsung lists the Fold7 at 215 g; Google lists the Pixel 10 Pro Fold at 9.1 oz. These figures describe different models and do not establish which one feels better to you.
- Battery evidence: Capacity and manufacturer estimates are not substitutes for comparable independent endurance tests. Google lists the Pixel 10 Pro Fold at 5015 mAh typical capacity and describes its battery life as 24+ hours, a manufacturer estimate. Samsung lists the Fold7 at 4400 mAh typical capacity (4272 mAh rated). In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 5G web-surfing test, the Fold7 lasted 10 hours 44 minutes and the newer Fold8 lasted 12 hours 19 minutes. Those are outlet-specific results for two foldable models, not a foldable-versus-slab comparison or a promise of your own battery life. Look for current tests using the same method across the specific phones you are considering.
- Camera priorities: Compare the exact camera hardware and independent examples for the kinds of photos you take. Samsung’s Fold7 specifications list a 200 MP main rear camera, a 12 MP ultra-wide, and a 10 MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom. Those specifications alone do not establish which phone takes better photos for your needs.
- Durability and protection: Google specifies IP68 dust and water resistance for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and lists its hinge and display materials. Samsung describes the Fold7’s redesigned hinge and foldable display as engineered for everyday durability. These are not long-term failure statistics or guarantees against every drop, dust exposure, or years of wear. Check the manufacturer’s protection-plan terms and which repairs are eligible in your region.
- Updates: Google’s current policy says Pixel 8 and later, including the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Pixel 10 Pro XL, receive seven years of OS and security updates from first U.S. Google Store availability. Confirm the policy that applies to your market and model before purchasing.
- Price and availability: Compare current local prices and availability rather than relying on an old launch price. Samsung announced a U.S. starting price of $1,999.99 for the Fold7 on July 9, 2025, with general availability from July 25, 2025; those are historical launch details, not a current quote.
Are foldables durable enough for everyday ownership?
Specifications and manufacturer descriptions help establish what a device is designed to offer, but they cannot answer every question about long-term wear or accidental damage. A foldable adds a hinge and a flexible inner display, so your comfort with those parts—and with the cost and availability of repairs—belongs in the buying decision.
Do not treat an IP rating or a manufacturer’s durability language as proof that a phone is immune to damage. Before choosing a particular model, check the applicable warranty, optional protection coverage, repair eligibility, and local service options. Terms can differ by market and by the type of damage.

How to make the final choice
- Name the recurring inner-screen task. Identify whether you will regularly read, watch, review documents, or use apps side by side. If you cannot identify a task you expect to do often, the foldable’s larger inner display may not add enough everyday value.
- Check the phone in its everyday states. If possible, try the outer screen and the unfolded screen, paying attention to app layout, reach, grip, folded width, hinge feel, and whether the crease bothers you.
- Compare the ownership details for your region. Verify current local pricing, availability, update policy, repair terms, and protection coverage for the exact model—not just the phone format.
- Use comparable battery tests. When battery life is important, compare independent tests that evaluate the specific models using the same method rather than inferring endurance from capacity figures.
- Choose the format whose benefit you will use. Favor a foldable when its inner-screen workspace solves a regular need and its ownership trade-offs suit you. Favor a conventional large-screen phone when one broad display is enough for your routine.
