A foldable phone’s inner screen is a layered assembly, not a single sheet of bendable glass. Depending on the model, it may include a factory-fitted protective film, additional protective layers, ultra-thin glass (UTG), and the display panel. The outer cover display is a separate surface and may use different materials. Because manufacturers build these screens differently, follow the care and replacement guidance for your exact phone.
What are the layers in a foldable phone display?
There is no universal foldable-screen stack. The inner folding display and the outer cover display are different surfaces, and their materials and care instructions can differ. Two manufacturer examples show why it matters to identify the phone and the screen before discussing a layer as if it applied to every foldable.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 and Z Fold4
Samsung’s 2022 support guidance for the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Z Fold4 describes an inner display with a replaceable protective film at the top, a protective layer beneath it, UTG, and an AMOLED display. Samsung says UTG provides a flat surface and enhances durability. The same explanation lists a fibre-reinforced plastic digitiser for the Z Fold4; it should not be generalized to the Flip4 or other models.
Motorola Razr examples
Motorola says its Razr phones have a fitted inner-screen liner tailored to the folding design. Its Razr support guidance says not to remove that liner or add a third-party protector to the inner screen.

Motorola’s 2026 Razr Fold announcement describes a different construction: an inner titanium screen plate, UTG, and Anti-Shock Film, with Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 on the outside. Those are Motorola’s claims about the announced Razr Fold, not a diagram that applies to other foldables.
What is UTG, and is it the same as cover glass?
Ultra-thin glass is glass engineered to be thin and flexible enough for use as a cover window in some foldable inner displays. Samsung Display described a 30-micrometre UTG cover window in a February 19, 2020 announcement. That is a specification for the product Samsung Display described, not a universal thickness for UTG.

“Cover glass” can refer to protective glass on an outer cover display. UTG, by contrast, refers to a thin glass component used in some inner folding-screen assemblies. Neither term is interchangeable with the factory-applied polymer film that sits above the screen layers.
Can I remove the screen protector on my foldable phone?
Do not assume the inner-screen film is an ordinary removable accessory. Samsung says the film on the cited Z Flip4 and Z Fold4 models can be replaced, but recommends keeping it attached and warns that arbitrary removal or installation can damage the panel. It also warns that uncertified film may distort the screen or affect performance. If that film is scratched, bubbling, or lifting, contact Samsung Support about an approved replacement rather than attempting a DIY removal.

Motorola’s guidance is different in its wording but equally clear for its Razr inner screen: do not remove the fitted liner and do not apply a third-party protector. Motorola warns that an added inner-screen protector can reduce touch sensitivity, make the main screen unresponsive, damage it, or cause touch problems. Check the instructions for the exact model and region rather than applying one manufacturer’s rule to every foldable.

For an optional protector, consider one made specifically for the phone’s outer cover display, and confirm the model and surface before buying. Do not treat generic phone-protector advice as permission to apply a film to the inner folding screen. Manufacturer restrictions vary, and the inner screen’s factory-fitted layer is part of a carefully designed assembly.

How to care for a foldable display
- Keep pressure off the fold. Samsung cautions against pressing the fold area or pushing the display with hard objects.
- Keep objects and debris out of the fold. Do not fold the phone with a card, key, or sand between the screens. Motorola warns that dust exposure can reduce hinge life and damage the display.
- Clean gently. Motorola’s Razr Fold guide recommends a dry, soft cloth; avoid abrasive cloths and do not spray cleaner directly onto the screen.
- Use the maker’s service route for inner-film problems. A lifting edge, bubble, or damaged film is not a reason to peel it off or add another layer without checking the model’s official instructions.
How to interpret foldable durability claims
Durability numbers from different makers may describe different tests, so they are not directly comparable. Samsung Display said its UTG passed 200,000 fold tests simulating extreme lifetime-use reliability, with Bureau Veritas commissioned to test durability, in its 2020 announcement. This is Samsung Display’s reported result, not an independent comparison across foldable phones.
Motorola said the Razr Fold offered over 75% better drop performance than previous-generation devices, based on Motorola’s internal testing, in its 2026 announcement. Drop performance and fold-cycle testing measure different things, so the percentages and test counts do not establish which phone is more durable overall.
