Choose the iPhone Duo if staying inside iOS matters most; choose Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra if your priority is the biggest available Fold-family workspace; choose the compact Galaxy Z Fold8 if you want the lighter, smaller Samsung design. These are not one-size-fits-all alternatives. Apple’s Duo and Samsung’s two Fold8 models use noticeably different proportions, and the right choice depends on how often you use the cover screen, how much multitasking you do when open, and which app ecosystem you already use.
Apple announced iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026. Samsung’s current family has two shapes: Galaxy Z Fold8 and the larger Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. Comparing them as a single “Galaxy Z Fold” hides important differences in screen size, weight, cameras and battery capacity.
At a glance: three different foldable designs
| Device | Closed display | Open display | Weight | Design implication |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple iPhone Duo | 5.4 inches | 7.6 inches | Not stated in Apple’s cited announcement sections | Apple says both screens share an aspect ratio, allowing a more continuous layout as the phone opens or closes. |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 | 5.5-inch cover screen | 7.6-inch main screen | 201 g | Samsung’s compact Fold8 shape uses a 10:16 cover screen and a 4:3 main screen. |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra | 6.5-inch cover screen | 8-inch main screen | 215 g | The largest screen configuration in Samsung’s Fold8 family, for readers who value workspace over compactness. |
The diagonal changes are straightforward: Duo expands by 2.2 inches when opened, Fold8 by 2.1 inches, and Fold8 Ultra by 1.5 inches. Diagonal measurements do not describe total screen area or aspect-ratio differences, so they should not be treated as a direct measure of usable space.
How the folded phones differ
iPhone Duo: continuity between two Apple screens
Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. Apple says the two screens share an aspect ratio, with the aim that content can continue naturally as you open or close the phone. That design emphasis is different from simply making the inner panel as large as possible: the outer and inner screens are presented as parts of one layout experience.

Apple has not stated Duo’s weight in the announcement sections cited here, so there is no reliable weight comparison with either Fold8 model. Treat any retailer specification or regional listing as a separate claim until Apple confirms it.
Galaxy Z Fold8: the compact Samsung option
The standard Fold8 weighs 201 g. Its 5.5-inch cover screen is close in diagonal size to Duo’s outer display, while its 7.6-inch main screen matches Duo’s stated inner-screen diagonal. Samsung describes the cover as a 10:16 display and the main panel as 4:3. Those proportions mean that the two screens serve different layouts rather than acting as simple scaled versions of one another.
For people who spend much of the day scrolling, replying to messages or checking notifications without unfolding, the Fold8 is the smaller Samsung configuration. Its 14 g weight advantage over Fold8 Ultra is a measured specification difference, not a claim about comfort in every hand or pocket.
Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: the largest Fold8 workspace
Fold8 Ultra weighs 215 g and has a 6.5-inch cover screen plus an 8-inch main display. The larger cover gives more room before unfolding, while the 8-inch inner panel is the broadest workspace in this Samsung family. The trade-off is the additional 14 g compared with Fold8 and a physically larger design.
If your buying question is specifically “Which current Samsung Fold gives me the most screen?” the answer is Fold8 Ultra. If your question is “Which Samsung Fold is the lighter, more compact shape?” it is the standard Fold8.

Cover-screen use: does either one replace a regular phone screen?
All three phones provide a usable display while closed, but the stated dimensions point to different priorities. Duo’s 5.4-inch outer display and Fold8’s 5.5-inch cover are similar in diagonal size. Fold8 Ultra’s 6.5-inch cover is substantially larger and gives Samsung’s larger model more room for reading, typing and viewing content without opening it.
Apple’s continuity claim concerns the relationship between Duo’s two screens. Samsung instead publishes distinct cover and main-screen proportions for each Fold8 model. Neither specification proves that every app, keyboard or web page will behave identically across the two states. App layout, text scaling and keyboard preferences can change the practical experience.
Use the cover display as your deciding screen if you often perform short tasks while folded. Compare the inner display if you regularly edit documents, view two apps together, read long pages or use a large canvas. A larger cover screen does not automatically make the phone lighter or easier to carry.
Open-screen workspace and multitasking
iPhone Duo and iOS 27
Duo runs iOS 27. Apple says it supports Split View, allowing two apps to appear side by side, and lets users save app pairs for later access. That directly addresses a common reason to buy a foldable: keeping two tasks visible instead of switching between them.
Apple also says third-party apps including Netflix, Zoom and Slack are adapting their experiences for the folding display. These are announced software capabilities; they do not establish that every feature in each app is already optimized or that layouts are identical across regions and versions.

Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra
Samsung positions the standard Fold8 around a more compact screen for scrolling and Fold8 Ultra around productivity on its 8-inch main display. The available specifications do not provide an independent measurement of how many app panels, windows or tasks each model can display at once. Your result will depend on Samsung’s software, the app’s foldable support and your preferred window arrangement.

The practical distinction is physical: Fold8 Ultra gives each open app more diagonal space, while Fold8 keeps the same 7.6-inch inner diagonal as Duo in a lighter Samsung body. If your work depends on a large document, spreadsheet or visual canvas, the Ultra’s 8-inch panel is the more relevant specification. If you mainly need two apps side by side and already use Apple services, Duo’s iOS 27 implementation may matter more than a 0.4-inch diagonal difference.
Ecosystem and app choice
Operating system is the first decision gate. Duo is designed for people who want a foldable within iOS, while both Fold8 models use Samsung’s Android-based experience. Contacts, messages, passwords, cloud files, wearables, tablets and computers can make switching ecosystems more consequential than a display specification.
- Choose Duo’s ecosystem when: your existing phone, tablet or computer workflow depends on Apple services and iOS behavior, and you want Apple’s announced Split View and saved app-pair features.
- Choose Fold8 or Fold8 Ultra’s ecosystem when: your current workflow is built around Samsung or Android services, or you prefer Samsung’s Fold-family approach to a compact cover plus a larger inner workspace.
- Check app support before buying: an app can run on a foldable without making full use of its inner display. Confirm the apps that matter for work, banking, authentication, video calls and media before treating a manufacturer’s adaptation announcement as proof of a finished experience.
Cameras: specifications favor the Ultra, but not automatically the photos
| Device | Rear-camera specifications listed by the manufacturer | What the specification tells you |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo | 48 MP Main, 48 MP Ultra Wide, optical-quality 2x telephoto from the Main camera | Two 48 MP rear cameras plus a stated 2x telephoto mode; no independent image-quality comparison is established here. |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 | Dual 50 MP Wide and Ultra Wide cameras | Two listed 50 MP rear cameras; the cited specification does not list a separate telephoto camera. |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra | 200 MP Wide and 10 MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom | More versatile listed camera hardware than the compact Fold8, including a dedicated 3x optical telephoto. |
Megapixel counts and lens lists cannot establish which phone takes better photographs. Image processing, motion handling, HDR, low-light behavior, video stabilization and front-camera performance all require controlled testing. The defensible conclusion from the published specifications is narrower: Fold8 Ultra has the most extensive listed rear-camera array, Fold8 lists dual 50 MP rear cameras, and Duo lists dual 48 MP cameras with a 2x optical-quality mode.
Battery claims and everyday endurance
Samsung lists a 4,800 mAh battery for Galaxy Z Fold8 and says it can provide up to 26 hours of video playback. That is a manufacturer claim under Samsung’s stated test conditions; it is not an independently comparable endurance result. Samsung lists a 5,000 mAh battery for Fold8 Ultra, but the cited information does not provide an equivalent video-playback figure for that model.

The cited Apple announcement sections do not state Duo’s battery capacity or a comparable playback estimate. Do not infer that a larger or smaller capacity number alone predicts longer real-world battery life: screen brightness, radio use, cameras, app activity and software tuning affect endurance.
For a fair shopping comparison, look for the exact model, storage configuration, network version and test method. A manufacturer’s “up to” figure should remain attached to those conditions and should not be rewritten as a guarantee of a full day for every user.

| Device | Protection and materials listed | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo | IP68, grade 5 titanium body, Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer display, and high-strength glass layers around the inner folding display | Apple’s published protection and material claims; no independent long-term hinge or drop comparison is established. |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 | IP48, Armor Aluminum, Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 on the front, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the back, titanium layers beneath the display, and a foldable hinge | Samsung’s published construction and ingress rating; IP48 is not directly equivalent to Apple’s IP68. |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra | The cited material does not provide a separate complete durability specification for every Ultra component | Verify the Ultra’s exact regional specification before assuming the standard Fold8 rating or materials apply unchanged. |
IP ratings describe tested resistance categories, not a promise that a folding phone will survive every spill, impact, dust exposure or hinge failure. The available manufacturer statements do not establish comparative long-term reliability, crease visibility or hinge life. Those questions require independent testing over time.
Stylus support: an important unresolved distinction
Apple says iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C later in 2026. Because the support is described as coming later, confirm that the feature has arrived in your region and software version before buying specifically for stylus work.

Samsung’s cited Galaxy Z Fold8 page states that the standard Fold8 does not support S Pen. The available information does not establish Fold8 Ultra stylus support, so do not apply the compact model’s statement to the Ultra or assume that the entire Fold8 family behaves identically. Check Samsung’s exact Ultra specification for your market.
Prices, launch dates and regional availability
| Device | Published U.S. starting price | Timing or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo | $1,999 | Apple announced it on September 9, 2026; preorders begin October 16, with availability beginning October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions. |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 | $1,899.99 | Samsung lists this price before trade-in; storage configuration, promotions and local taxes can change the amount. |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra | Not stated in the cited Samsung information | Check Samsung’s current local listing rather than extrapolating from the standard Fold8 price. |
These are published starting prices, not necessarily equivalent storage configurations. Prices, trade-in values, launch offers and availability can change, and a U.S. price does not predict the final amount in another country. Compare the same storage tier, warranty terms, taxes and carrier conditions before deciding that one model is cheaper.
Which design suits which type of buyer?
Pick iPhone Duo when continuity and iOS are the priority
- You want a foldable that remains inside the iOS ecosystem.
- You value Apple’s stated shared-aspect-ratio approach between the 5.4-inch outer and 7.6-inch inner displays.
- You expect to use iOS 27 Split View and saved app pairs.
- You are willing to verify the later-2026 Apple Pencil with USB-C rollout if stylus use is important.
- You accept that Apple’s cited announcement sections do not provide Duo’s weight or a comparable battery figure.
Pick Galaxy Z Fold8 when compact Samsung hardware matters most
- You want the lighter of Samsung’s two Fold8 shapes at 201 g.
- A 5.5-inch cover and 7.6-inch main display are sufficient for your use.
- You prefer Samsung’s compact 10:16 cover and 4:3 inner-screen configuration.
- You want the published 4,800 mAh battery and Samsung’s up-to-26-hour video-playback claim, while understanding that it is not an independent test.
- You do not require S Pen support, which Samsung explicitly excludes for the standard Fold8.
Pick Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra when open-screen area and camera range come first
- You want the family’s largest stated displays: 6.5 inches outside and 8 inches inside.
- You prefer more cover-screen room before unfolding and a larger inner workspace for multitasking.
- You want the listed 200 MP wide camera and dedicated 10 MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom.
- You accept the 215 g weight and the need to verify the Ultra’s exact stylus, durability and local-price specifications.
A purchase checklist that prevents the common mistakes
- Name the exact model. Write down iPhone Duo, Galaxy Z Fold8 or Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. “Galaxy Z Fold” is too vague for a price, camera or weight comparison.
- Compare the screens you will actually use. Check both folded and open dimensions, not just the largest diagonal. Fold8 and Duo both list 7.6-inch inner displays, while Fold8 Ultra lists 8 inches and a 6.5-inch cover.
- Audit your ecosystem. List the services, accessories, computers, tablets, wearables and authentication apps you use before changing operating systems.
- Test critical apps on the inner display. Verify window behavior, keyboard layout, video-call controls and account security for your essential apps.
- Verify stylus support by model and date. Apple’s Duo Pencil support is planned for later 2026; standard Fold8 does not support S Pen; Ultra support is not established by the cited information.
- Separate specifications from durability expectations. IP68 and IP48 are manufacturer ratings, not a ranking of hinge longevity or drop resistance.
- Compare like-for-like prices. Match storage, taxes, trade-in terms, warranty and local availability. The listed U.S. starting prices may not represent equivalent configurations.
- Decide whether you need camera versatility. The Ultra’s dedicated telephoto is a hardware distinction; it is not proof of better photos in every scene.
Bottom line
There is no universal winner. iPhone Duo is the coherent choice for an iOS household that wants Apple’s foldable implementation and announced continuity features. Galaxy Z Fold8 is the compact Samsung alternative at 201 g with 7.6-inch inner space. Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is the design for buyers who will use its 6.5-inch cover, 8-inch main display and broader listed camera system enough to justify 215 g. Make the decision from your ecosystem and folded-versus-open routine, then verify the exact regional price, software support and model-specific specifications.
