Martin Ott says his time at Facebook taught him to focus on the work where he can make the biggest difference—not simply to fill the day with tasks. The former Facebook executive, now CEO of Taxfix, describes a practical daily question: “Ask yourself, what is the real one thing you could do today to really have impact, make a difference?” Hindustan Times attributes that advice to Ott; it is his reported recollection, not a verified direct instruction from Mark Zuckerberg.
What lesson does Martin Ott say he took from working with Zuckerberg?
Ott joined Facebook in 2012, according to Hindustan Times. He says the experience shaped a focus on consequential work: identify what is most important and give that priority over staying busy for its own sake.
Ott’s question is a prompt for deciding where his effort matters most that day. The report does not establish that Zuckerberg personally delivered those exact words to him. A separate 2012 record does, however, document the broader principle at Facebook: Zuckerberg’s letter included in the company’s Form S-1 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission lists “Focus on Impact” as a company value and says the aim is to solve the most important problems. That supports the connection in principle, but not a specific private conversation or coaching exchange.
How does Ott apply the idea to meetings?
Ott says he asks whether he needs to attend a meeting: “do you need to be in that meeting or not,” as reported by Hindustan Times. The practical test is whether his presence or decision is necessary. If not, time may be better spent on work where he can contribute more directly.

This is a prioritization approach, not a claim that meetings are inherently unproductive. The relevant question is whether a particular meeting needs that person’s participation, rather than whether meetings should be avoided altogether.
What does Ott say about being available around the clock?
“That 24/7 only works so long,” Ott told Hindustan Times. The report describes his practice of scheduling early emails and Slack messages to arrive during the workday, rather than interrupting employees’ personal time. Moneycontrol also reports the broad lesson, meeting question, and boundary-setting approach in its account of Ott’s advice.
These reports describe Ott’s stated management practice; they do not demonstrate that scheduled messages prevent burnout or produce measurable productivity gains. They do show how he says he applies the same prioritization idea to communication: a message can wait for a workday instead of demanding attention as soon as it is written.

Taxfix’s official about page identifies Martin Ott as CEO and describes digital tax-filing and tax-adviser services in Germany, the UK, and Spain. The company says it has enabled more than 10 million tax filings; that is a company-reported figure, not an independent estimate.

The “$1 billion” description comes from the news headlines, not from the Taxfix about page. That page does not confirm a current valuation, so the figure should be understood as a reported descriptor rather than a verified present-day market valuation.
