In Florida, drivers approaching a school bus displaying its stop signal must stop fully and remain stopped until the signal is withdrawn. Opposite-direction traffic is exempt only when the roadway has a qualifying physical divider: an unpaved space at least five feet wide, a raised median, or a physical barrier. Since July 1, 2026, the statutory penalty is $200 for failing to stop, $400 for passing on the side where children enter or exit, and $200 for either offense enforced by a school-bus camera system.
When Florida drivers must stop for a school bus
Florida Statutes § 316.172 requires a vehicle approaching a school bus displaying its stop signal to come to a full stop while the bus is stopped. Do not pass until the signal has been withdrawn. The rule applies on Florida roads and highways. Read § 316.172 in the 2026 Florida Statutes.
When opposite-direction traffic may proceed
Drivers traveling in the opposite direction may proceed without stopping only if the highway has one of these physical separations:
- An unpaved space at least five feet wide;
- A raised median; or
- A physical barrier.
A road having multiple lanes is not, by itself, enough to qualify. Florida DOT’s plain-language guidance says traffic in both directions must stop on a two-lane road and where the roadway is paved across. On a divided roadway, opposite-direction traffic may proceed cautiously when the statutory separation applies. Florida school bus stop-arm penalties
Florida’s 2026 penalty changes took effect July 1, 2026. The statutory amounts distinguish between failing to stop and passing on the side where children enter or exit. Camera-enforced cases have a separate statutory penalty. Chapter 2026-112, Laws of Florida.

These are statutory penalty amounts, not necessarily the total amount due. Additional fees or costs may apply; the total can depend on current law and the case. The 2023 law describes a camera-enforcement additional amount, but the current total should not be inferred from that older provision without confirmation against current codified law. Repeat offenses can suspend your license
A second or subsequent offense within five years can bring a driver-license suspension, with the range depending on which stop-arm violation occurred:

How Florida school-bus camera notices work
Florida law allows school districts to use school-bus infraction detection systems and contract for their installation, operation, or maintenance. A vendor may not be paid based on the number of violations detected. When a district begins a program, it must provide a 30-day public awareness period during which it may issue warnings only. For an alleged camera violation, recorded evidence goes to an authorized law-enforcement agency for review. If the agency determines a violation occurred, it sends a notice to the registered owner. The notice must provide images, the date, time, and location, the penalty amount and payment instructions, hearing instructions, and information on viewing the video and images.
Within 60 days after the notice is sent, the recipient may pay, submit an affidavit, or request an administrative hearing to avoid court fees, costs, and issuance of a uniform traffic citation. The video and images create a rebuttable presumption of a violation. The law also lists situations in which the registered owner is not liable, including when the vehicle was in another person’s care, custody, or control. Review the notice and statutory process carefully if you dispute responsibility.
