Floating Workspace is an experimental ChromeOS feature described in Chromium as restoring a user’s desk across devices. It is not the same as ChromeOS’s existing Float window control, which lets you reposition and resize a window on one Chromebook. The available sources do not confirm which Canary build includes Floating Workspace, who can enable it, or whether it has reached any particular user’s device.
What Floating Workspace is meant to do
A Chromium change authored by Andrey Davydov on May 14, 2025 describes Floating Workspace (FWS) as “an enterprise feature which restores user’s desk across devices.” In practical terms, the stated goal is to bring a user’s desk back on another device—not simply to keep one window visible while working on the same Chromebook.
That change also records an implementation conflict with Full Restore: when Floating Workspace is enabled, the code skips creation of the Full Restore service. This is a note about the implementation at that point in time, not a current user guide or proof of how every configuration behaves today. Chromium change, May 14, 2025
Floating Workspace is not ChromeOS Float
ChromeOS already has a feature called Float, but it serves a different purpose. Google’s Chromebook Help describes it this way: “When you float a window, you keep that window open and can freely move it around.” To use it, hover over a window’s Maximize button, choose Float, then reposition or resize the window. A floated window remains in the background when you select other windows or apps.

Float works with an individual window on the current device. Floating Workspace, by contrast, is described in Chromium as restoring a desk across devices. Google Chromebook Help: Float a window
How it compares with existing ChromeOS desks
ChromeOS’s virtual desks are established controls for organizing windows on one Chromebook. Google documents moving windows between desks, making a window available on all desks, saving a desk for later, and reopening a saved desk. These features offer useful ways to manage and resume local work, but their documentation does not establish cross-device desk restoration.

Is it available in ChromeOS Canary?
The feature has been reported as arriving in Canary, but the available primary-source material does not identify a confirmed build number, rollout cohort, or reliable enablement path. A Chromium source snapshot defines both FloatingWorkspace and FloatingWorkspaceV2 flags as disabled by default in that snapshot. Because a source snapshot is version-specific, it cannot establish the status of a later Canary build or prove that the feature is available to all Canary users. Chromium source snapshot: feature flags
For now, do not assume that a particular flag, account setting, or administrator control will enable Floating Workspace. The evidence does not establish whether rollout is staged, what current account or policy requirements apply, or whether Floating Workspace V2 is part of the reported Canary arrival.

What to know before switching to Canary
Canary is a more experimental ChromeOS channel, not a guarantee that a specific feature will appear on your device. Google says the Chromebook owner must switch channels, workplace or school policies may block channel switching, and users should back up their data before making the change. Those general instructions do not confirm that Floating Workspace is present in a particular build or available to a particular account. Google Chromebook Help: change your Chromebook’s channel

No new Chromebook, specific model, or accessory requirement is established in the available sources. ChromeOS is the platform context; the evidence does not specify hardware requirements for Floating Workspace.
