A flight simulator can help you rehearse cockpit procedures, instrument scans, navigation and abnormal scenarios; only an aircraft gives you the actual handling and visual cues of flight. The two are complementary, but practice value is not the same as FAA training credit: that depends on the specific device, task, rule and instructor requirements.

What a flight simulator can teach

Simulation recreates aircraft flight and operational environments for training without exposing a live aircraft to the risks of a test or induced failure. The FAA describes flight simulation as a tool for pilot training, aircraft development and performance assessment (FAA: Technical Discipline: Flight Simulation Systems).

Repeatable procedures and cockpit tasks

A learner can repeat a checklist flow, instrument scan, navigation task or cockpit sequence under consistent conditions. That makes a simulator useful for rehearsing what to look for and what to do before attempting a task in an aircraft. Rehearsal alone, however, does not prove that the same response will transfer to a real aircraft.

Abnormal scenarios and workload

Simulation can present failures and their consequences without deliberately creating a hazard in flight. AOPA writer Neil Singer noted that some system failures must be trained in a simulator because they cannot safely be reproduced in an aircraft (AOPA: “Mentor Matters: Simulator versus airplane training”). Scenarios can also let a learner practise making decisions as conditions change.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What real flight teaches that a simulator cannot fully reproduce

In an aircraft, a learner experiences actual control forces, aircraft response, outside visual references and environmental cues. Those matter especially for visual maneuvering and for judging how the aircraft responds in the real operating environment. AOPA’s comparison identifies visual maneuvering as an area where real flight can be better suited to training.

A simulator’s usefulness for handling tasks depends on how faithfully its controls and visual cues represent the aircraft. Consumer equipment may offer tactile practice, but it does not make a desktop setup equivalent to an aircraft or a qualified training device.

How the two forms of practice compare

Training need Simulator Real flight
Repeatable rehearsal Can repeat procedures and scenarios in consistent conditions. Repetition depends on aircraft availability, instructor, conditions, airspace and operating costs.
Risky or abnormal events Can safely rehearse failures and consequences that should not be induced in an aircraft. Some events are unsafe to reproduce and must be discussed or practised in simulation.
Visual maneuvering and aircraft handling Useful to the extent that the device represents the relevant cues and response faithfully. Provides actual visual references, control forces, aircraft response and environmental cues.
Regulatory training credit Counts only when the specific device, task, rule and required instructor and records conditions qualify. Counts according to the applicable training and experience requirements.
Access and cost May provide extra practice; setup and fidelity vary. Requires access to an aircraft and instructor and incurs operating costs.

This is a qualitative comparison: the cited FAA and AOPA sources do not establish a current price comparison, a quantified cost advantage, or a numerical difference in learning outcomes.

Can a consumer flight simulator teach you how to fly?

It can support familiarization and help you practise procedures, instrument scanning, navigation and cockpit workload. It cannot provide complete flight instruction, certify that your skills transfer to an aircraft, or qualify you for a pilot licence by itself. Treat it as supplementary practice, not a replacement for an instructor and actual flight training.

A home setup may include a yoke and rudder pedals, but those controls and consumer software do not automatically turn a desktop simulator into an FAA-approved training device. AOPA’s description of PC-based training equipment is historical and does not establish current product models or specifications (AOPA: Answers for Pilots).

When can simulator time count toward pilot training?

Practice value and regulatory credit are separate questions. Under FAA rules, credit depends on the category and qualification or approval of the particular device, the task and regulation involved, and any instructor and recordkeeping conditions. A desktop program or generic controller should not be assumed to qualify.

  1. Identify the specific device. Check whether it is an FAA-qualified Basic Aviation Training Device (BATD), Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD), or another applicable training device. The FAA’s National Simulator Program provides program and device qualification information.
  2. Check the approval and limitations. Review the device’s approval documentation to see which training tasks and uses it permits. FAA Advisory Circular AC 61-136B, “FAA Approval of Aviation Training Devices and Their Use for Training and Experience”, covers approval and use of BATDs and AATDs.
  3. Match the task to the current rule. Consult the applicable regulation rather than relying on an old article or a general claim that simulator hours count. Limits and permitted uses depend on the rule and device.
  4. Confirm with an authorized instructor and keep required records. Ask the instructor overseeing your training whether the planned activity qualifies and what documentation is required.

Do not apply historical hour limits from older material as current FAA rules; verify the requirements that apply to your training and device.

How to use both effectively

  • Use simulation to prepare for a procedure or cockpit task you will later practise with an instructor.
  • Use repeatable scenarios to rehearse decisions and workload, especially where an in-flight failure should not be deliberately induced.
  • Use real flight to develop aircraft handling and visual maneuvering with an instructor.
  • Before counting any simulator session toward a formal requirement, verify the device qualification, permitted task and current rule.
