A flat-panel display is a thin, low-profile screen that forms images using electronically controlled pixels. Its pixels either control light from a separate source or produce light themselves. The term describes the display’s form and broad design—not one specific technology.
What makes a display a flat panel?
Flat-panel displays use a two-dimensional array of picture elements, or pixels, to create images. Their thin construction distinguishes them from conventional cathode-ray tube (CRT) screens, which use an electron gun inside a deep vacuum envelope. A flat panel does not need that bulky arrangement behind the viewing surface.
“Flat” is a practical description of the screen’s low-profile form, not a promise that every surface is perfectly flat. A monitor is one familiar example, but flat-panel displays are also used in televisions, phones, and other devices. The display is the screen technology; the monitor or phone is the larger device that contains it.

Flat-panel technologies use different mechanisms. The key distinction is whether pixels control light from a separate source or emit light directly.

LCD is a light-modulating, or non-emissive, display technology; OLED and plasma are emissive. OLED designs can support flexible substrates in some implementations, but that does not mean every OLED display is flexible.
Is an LED display the same as an LCD?
In common television and monitor descriptions, “LED” often means an LCD panel illuminated by LEDs. The LEDs provide the backlight; the LCD pixels still control how much of that light passes through. Calling it an LED-backlit LCD makes the distinction clearer when the image-forming mechanism matters.

Do not treat “LCD,” “OLED,” “LED-backlit LCD,” and “plasma” as interchangeable names: they describe different technologies or product arrangements.

How does a flat-panel display differ from a CRT?
A CRT forms an image by directing an electron beam onto a phosphor-coated screen inside a deep vacuum tube. A flat-panel display instead uses a thin pixel array, either modulating light or generating it at the pixels. That change in architecture is why flat panels can be much less deep than conventional CRT displays.

Which technologies are used in monitors today?
LCD and OLED are identified as major current monitor technologies. Plasma is useful for understanding the range and history of flat-panel designs, but it should not be presented as a typical current monitor technology on the same footing. When comparing particular monitors, relevant attributes include resolution, refresh rate, color performance, and response time; the display type alone does not determine those specifications.
