When Selenium says an element is not visible or not interactable, first confirm that the page is in the expected state and that your locator selects the control you mean to use. Then match the action to that control, wait for the condition the action requires, and check for viewport or overlay problems. A node’s presence in the DOM alone does not make it actionable.
What these Selenium errors mean
The exception describes what Selenium could do with the target at the moment of the attempted action; it does not necessarily mean the element is missing.
- ElementNotVisibleException: Selenium’s troubleshooting documentation describes an element that is present in the DOM but not visible.
- ElementNotInteractableException: a broader failure: the requested operation cannot be performed on the element in its current state. The locator may point to the wrong kind of node, the element may be hidden or outside the viewport, or the operation may not suit it.
- ElementClickInterceptedException: a click-specific obstruction. The target may be displayed, but another element covers its center point and receives the click instead.
- NoSuchElementException: Selenium did not find a matching element at lookup time. Waiting for presence may help, but presence does not establish visibility or interactability.
Error class spelling and availability vary by language binding and installed Selenium version. Selenium’s official Python API reference currently identifies itself as Selenium 4.50.0 and includes ElementNotVisibleException in an example; check the exception reference for the binding and version your test actually uses.
Diagnose the failure in order
1. Confirm the page and matched element
Verify that navigation reached the expected page and that preceding actions completed. Inspect the live DOM, or use browser developer tools to evaluate the locator. If it matches more than one node, narrow it to the intended control—not a nearby label, wrapper, table cell, or hidden duplicate. Selenium identifies a locator that selects a non-interactable element as a common cause.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Use an operation that suits the control
Send text to a text field or another keyboard-interactable element; do not send it to a form, label, or container simply because that node is nearby. Use click() for a control meant to receive a click. Selenium’s interaction commands include click, send keys, clear, submit, and select operations; choose according to the element’s role and the action required.
3. Check displayed state, without treating it as a guarantee
Call isDisplayed() (or the equivalent in your binding) to check Selenium’s assessment of whether the element is displayed in the current browsing context. A true result does not guarantee a pointer action will succeed. Selenium notes that visibility is approximated because the WebDriver specification does not fully define it, and a displayed element can still be obstructed.

4. Wait for the condition the next action needs
Dynamic applications may continue changing after a page-load command returns. If a field appears only after another action, wait for visibility before typing; if an element is not yet in the DOM, wait for presence first. This Python example follows Selenium’s documented Expected Conditions pattern:
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.wait import WebDriverWait
field = WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(
EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.ID, "revealed"))
)
field.send_keys("Displayed")
The timeout shown is an example for this wait, not a universal recommendation. Adjust it to the application and test environment. Expected Conditions APIs differ by language binding; Selenium documents that .NET stopped supporting its Expected Conditions classes in Selenium 4.

5. Investigate viewport position and obstructions
Selenium’s element interaction command scrolls an out-of-viewport element into view before checking interactability. If an action still fails, check whether the target is hidden, disabled, obstructed, or otherwise not ready. For a click-intercepted error, inspect the center point for a sticky navigation bar, modal, popup, or animation. Wait for the obstruction or transition to finish instead of treating every click failure as invisibility.
Choose waits that match the condition
An implicit wait applies globally to element-location calls and defaults to zero; it does not establish that a located element is displayed or suitable for the next action. An explicit wait polls a selected condition, such as visibility, and times out if that condition never becomes true. Prefer an explicit wait at the point the test needs a particular state.
Selenium warns against mixing implicit and explicit waits because their combined timing can be unpredictable. A fixed time.sleep() is also a poor default: it can be too short when an application is slow and waste time when it is fast. Wait on the state the action requires rather than adding an arbitrary delay.

Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Text entry fails on a node found by the locator | The locator may select a label, form, wrapper, or other unsuitable node; the field may not yet be displayed. | Inspect the matched node, target the actual input, and wait for visibility before sending keys. |
| Element lookup fails immediately | The node is not present yet, the page is unexpected, or the locator is wrong. | Confirm the current page and locator; if rendering is asynchronous, wait for presence, then wait for the state needed by the action. |
| Click reports interception | An overlay or another element covers the target’s center point. | Inspect sticky navigation, modals, popups, and animation timing; wait until the obstruction clears. |
| Element is found but cannot be used | DOM presence is being mistaken for displayed or interactable state. | Check displayed state and action suitability; wait for the required condition and inspect whether the target is disabled, hidden, or outside the viewport. |
| Wait duration seems inconsistent | Implicit and explicit waits may be interacting. | Use one coherent strategy and make the needed condition explicit where the action occurs. |

If your goal is to capture a page screenshot rather than automate a Selenium interaction, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. One GET request returns an image or PDF. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
For example, save a WebP screenshot of a URL with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for setup and parameters. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
