Neither fixed wireless broadband nor satellite internet is best for every rural household. Start by checking which providers can serve your exact address. If both are available, compare busy-hour performance, latency for your household’s needs, total costs, service terms, reliability, and installation requirements. The FCC’s national findings provide useful context, but they cannot identify the better service at a particular home.
How to compare the options at your address
- Check the FCC National Broadband Map. Search your address and note the listed providers, technologies, and maximum advertised download and upload speeds. The map shows fixed wireless and satellite alongside other fixed broadband technologies. Providers report data through the FCC’s Broadband Data Collection twice a year; the map is also updated through provider filings, FCC verification, location updates, and public input. Open the FCC National Broadband Map.
- Confirm service directly with each provider. A map listing does not guarantee that a provider can install service at your home. Ask whether the address is orderable and whether there are signal, capacity, or installation restrictions.
- Compare written plan details. Ask each provider about expected download and upload speeds, latency, busy-hour performance, congestion or priority rules, data limits, monthly charges, equipment and installation costs, contract terms, and cancellation fees.
- Check whether installation is feasible. Fixed wireless may depend on a usable signal and suitable equipment placement. Satellite requires a suitable view of the sky and a workable location for the terminal and mount.
The FCC map reports availability, not household performance, affordability, or adoption. It displays provider-reported maximum advertised speeds; those figures are not a guarantee of what a household will experience. Services below 25 Mbps download are hidden by default, but filters can reveal them. If the map reports service that you cannot actually obtain, the FCC provides a process for challenging availability data, including certain wireless and satellite reports that may be affected by signal or oversubscription. See the FCC’s map challenge guidance.
What the performance evidence says
The FCC’s 2026 broadband report says satellite users typically experience download speeds of 45–280 Mbps and upload speeds of 10–30 Mbps. It also says satellite performance trails most rural fixed wireless providers. These are broad U.S. findings, not a guarantee for a particular provider, plan, or address; the report does not establish a common fixed wireless speed or latency range. Read the FCC broadband report.

Satellite performance and reliability can decline with congestion, and the FCC notes that capacity limitations become more apparent as demand grows. For a household, this makes busy-hour performance and plan rules important, especially when several people use the connection at once.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Starlink’s published figures are plan specifications
Starlink lists the following expected ranges for its fixed plans. These are provider specifications, not independent test results, and are not directly comparable to the FCC’s measurements of typical user experience.
| Starlink plan | Expected download | Expected upload | Expected latency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard (Fixed) | 25–100 Mbps | 5–10 Mbps | 25–60 ms |
| Priority (Fixed) | 40–220 Mbps | 8–25 Mbps | 25–60 ms |
Starlink says performance varies by location, time of day, and service plan; higher latency is possible in certain remote locations. The published specification page does not state a publication date. View Starlink’s specifications.

Which connection fits your household’s use?
Do not choose by download speed alone. Upload capacity and latency can matter just as much for calls, gaming, and work. Ask providers what to expect at the times your household is online, then judge the answer against your actual activities.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Video calls and remote work: Compare upload speeds and latency as well as download. Ask whether performance changes at busy times.
- Online gaming: Latency is especially relevant. Seek a plan-specific expectation for your address rather than assuming one technology always has lower latency.
- Streaming and multiple simultaneous users: Compare busy-hour download performance and any congestion, data, or priority rules that could affect several users at once.
- Large uploads or frequent cloud backups: Give upload performance particular weight; advertised download speed alone will not answer this question.
The available evidence does not establish a universal latency winner or an apples-to-apples performance comparison between fixed wireless and satellite. Results depend on the provider, plan, location, and local network conditions.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Compare the full cost and installation—not just the monthly price
Current service prices, equipment charges, installation fees, data policies, and contract terms are not established for a particular address. Offers vary by provider and location, so compare current written terms rather than assuming one technology is cheaper.
- Total cost: Include monthly service, equipment, installation, taxes, promotional pricing changes, and any contract or cancellation charges.
- Fixed wireless setup: Ask what signal or equipment-placement conditions apply at your home and whether installation is available there.
- Satellite setup: Confirm the required sky view and terminal location. Starlink describes a kit that includes a user terminal, router, power supply, and mount; an additional mount is not automatically necessary. If considering a separate mount, verify compatibility with the terminal and installation. See Starlink’s equipment information.
Which is better for rural areas?
For a home where both services are available, choose the provider that can document the better fit for that location: reliable busy-hour performance, suitable latency and upload capacity for your activities, clear data and congestion terms, feasible installation, and the lower total cost for the service you will actually receive. The FCC’s findings favor most rural fixed wireless providers over satellite on performance overall, but that broad comparison cannot substitute for checking the offers and conditions at your address.
