If a firewall is closing your YouTube encoder’s ordinary RTMP connection, switch the encoder to YouTube’s current RTMPS URL and ask your network administrator to allow the encoder’s outbound TCP connection on port 443 to that YouTube ingestion host. RTMPS wraps RTMP in SSL/TLS; the correct hostname also matters for TLS server-name indication (SNI). Do not guess the URL or open an inbound port.
Why a firewall can disconnect a YouTube stream
An encoder sends a connection to a YouTube ingestion server. Ordinary RTMP and RTMPS are not interchangeable connection settings: RTMPS is RTMP carried over SSL/TLS, and YouTube specifies port 443 for its RTMPS connection. If the encoder uses the wrong scheme, port, or hostname—or a firewall, proxy, or security gateway blocks or interrupts the outbound connection—the stream may fail to connect or drop during broadcast. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide explains the protocol and endpoint requirements.
A port being commonly used for HTTPS does not mean your organization permits every connection on TCP 443. Network policy may restrict destinations, inspect encrypted traffic, or terminate connections. The administrator needs to check the actual endpoint and the logs around the failure.
Switch the encoder to YouTube RTMPS
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Find the stream’s connection settings and reveal the RTMPS URL. YouTube may show ordinary RTMP by default; copy the RTMPS URL provided for your stream instead of substituting a generic address. See YouTube’s live encoder setup instructions.
- Update the encoder’s server URL. In the encoder’s stream or broadcast settings, select a custom server if required, then paste the RTMPS URL. Confirm it begins with
rtmps://and retains the hostname and path exactly as shown. If the encoder requires a port to be entered separately, use port443. - Enter the current stream key. Copy the key from the same YouTube stream setup and paste it into the encoder’s stream-key field. Treat the key as a password: do not share it or include it in screenshots or support messages.
- Save and test. Start a test broadcast before an important event. Check YouTube’s stream health and the encoder’s log for connection, TLS, or dropped-frame errors.
The encoder must support RTMPS. The ingestion hostname is important for SNI authentication, so do not replace it with an IP address or a different host. A valid-looking stream key cannot compensate for a wrong endpoint or protocol.

Ask for the right firewall change
For a stream started by an encoder on your computer, ask the network administrator to review outbound egress from that device to the current YouTube RTMPS ingestion hostname over TCP 443. This is an outbound allow-rule request, not inbound port forwarding. OBS community troubleshooting guidance likewise says port forwarding is not needed for outbound streaming; the organization’s own network policy remains controlling.
Give the administrator useful evidence rather than asking to “open RTMP” generally:

- The encoder device or user and the time, including time zone, when the connection failed.
- The exact YouTube ingestion hostname copied from Live Control Room (do not send the stream key).
- The configured protocol and port: RTMPS and outbound TCP 443.
- The encoder error and relevant firewall, proxy, or secure-web-gateway log entries.
Ask whether policy permits the connection to that destination and whether TLS inspection or a proxy is affecting it. Do not assume all TCP 443 traffic is allowed just because web browsing works.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| SSL certificate or handshake error | The URL uses rtmps://; the hostname is the one YouTube supplied; the encoder supports RTMPS and preserves TLS certificate validation and SNI. |
Correct the URL and port 443 configuration. If it still fails, ask the administrator to check whether a proxy or TLS inspection policy is interfering. |
| Connection timeout | The encoder is not sending cleartext RTMP to an RTMPS endpoint; URL, port, and stream key are current; the encoder supports RTMPS. | Have the administrator inspect outbound policy and connection logs for the endpoint at the failure time. |
| Stream starts, then drops frames or disconnects | Intermittent network loss, VPN behavior, security software, firewall inspection, available upload capacity, and shared bandwidth. | Compare logs and stream health during a controlled test. A different permitted network working can narrow the investigation, but does not alone prove which device or policy caused the problem. |
OBS troubleshooting guidance identifies security or antivirus software and VPNs as possible sources of interference. Where policy permits, use logs and a controlled comparison to isolate them; do not leave protection disabled as a permanent fix. For dropped frames, OBS also points to an unstable connection or one unable to sustain the selected bitrate. These symptoms do not by themselves prove that the encoder software is at fault.

Check upload capacity and link stability
YouTube recommends about 20% upload headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. Count both primary and backup streams if you use dual ingestion, and remember that shared office bandwidth can reduce the upload rate available to your encoder. Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings and network guidance for bitrate targets appropriate to the stream; no single bitrate is a universal firewall fix.
Test with a reliable connection and review stream health and encoder logs. If you suspect Wi-Fi or a local-link problem, a wired connection can help test that part of the path, but a cable cannot fix an egress rule that blocks the YouTube endpoint.

When another streaming protocol is an option
YouTube also supports HLS and DASH. They may be worth considering when the encoder supports them and their latency, codec, and stream requirements suit the event. A protocol change is not a documented way to evade firewall policy: if the network blocks or terminates the selected traffic, switching protocols is not a guaranteed fix. Ask the administrator which destinations and protocols are permitted before changing the production setup.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded video or playlist that needs to stay live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Nothing has to stay running on your computer or home connection; each slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
