A Chennai VPS can still buffer YouTube: its location does not guarantee that a particular video is cached nearby or that the route to Google is uncongested. First check playback quality and compare a genuinely different internet connection. If the problem follows the VPS, collect time-stamped route, packet-loss, and sustained-throughput evidence and ask the provider to investigate its upstream path and peering. The steps below distinguish playback problems from VPS network problems; the title alone does not establish whether YouTube is playing on the VPS or being relayed to another viewer.
First identify where YouTube is playing
The right diagnosis depends on the setup. A browser playing YouTube on the VPS depends on the VPS’s route to Google’s video-serving infrastructure, as well as the browser and playback settings. If software on the VPS relays a stream to a separate viewer, there are two network paths to consider: the VPS’s connection to YouTube and the relay’s connection to the viewer. If the viewer is watching YouTube directly on another device, the VPS may not be involved in playback at all.
- Write down where the player is running and, if applicable, which system relays the stream.
- Record the video, date and time with time zone, selected quality, and whether buffering is continuous or happens only at particular times.
- Note whether the same video buffers on another network or from a different VPS location, if you can make that comparison.
Without the provider, instance, playback method, and measurements, no one can identify the cause of a particular VPS’s buffering from its Chennai location alone.
Try YouTube’s playback checks
YouTube recommends trying a different internet connection and manually adjusting playback quality when videos buffer or load poorly. These checks help separate a playback or connection issue from a VPS-specific route problem. YouTube Help: troubleshoot streaming and video quality.

- Lower the selected video quality. In the YouTube player, open Settings, choose Quality, and select a lower resolution. If playback becomes stable, that suggests the current connection or playback setup may not sustain the higher-quality stream. It does not, by itself, identify the cause.
- Compare a different connection. Play the same video at the same quality on a genuinely separate network, such as a mobile connection, rather than another device still using the same VPS route or local network.
- Compare the VPS path. If possible, test the same VPS workload from a different provider or location. Keep the video, quality, and test period as similar as practical, and record the differences.
A generic speed-test result is not proof that the route to YouTube is healthy. Record sustained throughput while buffering occurs, along with the selected quality and time, so the provider can assess the affected path.
Collect useful network evidence from the VPS
If playback is smooth elsewhere but consistently buffers through the VPS, gather observations during an affected period. The goal is to give the provider a reproducible symptom and evidence to investigate—not to claim that one ping or route trace reveals which YouTube cache served the video.

- Timestamped observations: record the time and time zone, video, selected quality, player location, and whether playback was continuously or intermittently buffering.
- Route and packet-loss observations: capture route and loss measurements to relevant Google or YouTube endpoints during the symptom. Compare repeated observations over time rather than relying on a single sample.
- Sustained throughput: record throughput during playback and buffering, not only a brief speed test taken at another time.
- Comparisons: note whether the same test behaves differently from another network, provider, or VPS location, if available.
Google says it does not use ICMP ping latency to select a serving location, because ICMP latency does not accurately represent application performance. A ping result can be one part of a network record, but it neither identifies the serving cache nor proves that YouTube’s application path is healthy. Google Interconnect Help: Content Served.
Ask the VPS provider to investigate the path
Send the provider your timestamps, playback conditions, comparisons, and route, packet-loss, and throughput observations. Ask it to check the following for the affected destination and hours:

- Whether the VPS host or its upstream network saw outbound congestion or packet loss.
- Which transit and peering paths were available, and whether there were route changes or instability.
- Whether the public IP address or its announced prefix could be taking a different route than expected.
- Whether performance differs by time of day, VPS location, or provider for the same YouTube workload.
These are investigation questions, not established defects in any unnamed provider. A Chennai VPS label does not reveal its upstream route or peering arrangements. Compare providers only with measurements for the affected hours and workload; city labels and advertised interconnections alone do not establish which service will perform better.
Why a Chennai VPS may not use a nearby YouTube cache
Google says high-volume, cacheable YouTube content can be served by a local Google Global Cache (GGC) node or from Google core locations over peering and transit. Its serving-location choice considers overall application performance, demand, available capacity, maintenance, legal requirements, and DNS resolver configuration. Google’s Media CDN documentation lists Chennai among its points of presence, while noting that active points of presence can change without notice. That documents Google edge presence in the city; it does not establish that a particular YouTube request from your VPS uses that point of presence, or that the requested video is cached there. Google explains that its edge points of presence connect its network to the wider internet through peering, and that GGC nodes can temporarily cache popular content, including YouTube videos, inside ISP networks. This helps explain why a host’s interconnection and route matter, but it does not disclose the path used by an unnamed Chennai VPS provider. Google: peering infrastructure. Check for regional incidents, but verify the date
Google Cloud Service Health documented a June 2026 incident affecting traffic from Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, and surrounding areas, with intermittent elevated latency and possible packet loss. Google’s record says recovery was complete on June 26, 2026 PDT. This is historical context, not evidence that the incident is ongoing or that it caused an individual VPS’s buffering.
