First find out whether the Mumbai VPS is actually carrying the video traffic. It can only cause buffering if it is in the path for playback or for the stream sent to YouTube. A viewer watching YouTube directly while the VPS does unrelated work is unlikely to fix buffering by changing that server. Compare the same stream at the same quality and time through the VPS and through an independent connection before changing settings or providers.

Identify what the VPS is doing

“Watching through a VPS” and “streaming from a VPS” are different setups with different fault paths. Establish which one applies before troubleshooting:

  • Remote playback: YouTube plays on a browser or desktop session hosted on the VPS, and you watch that session remotely. The VPS and the connection between it and your device can both affect what you see.
  • Proxy or VPN: You watch on your own device, but your YouTube traffic is routed through the VPS. The VPS route may affect playback; compare it with the same device on a direct connection.
  • VPS encoder or relay: The VPS receives or encodes video and sends it to YouTube. Investigate the encoder, its outbound connection, and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
  • VPS not in the video path: If neither playback nor stream delivery uses the server, start with the viewer’s device and Internet connection instead.

The fact that a VPS is shared or located in Mumbai does not, by itself, establish the cause of buffering. The VPS provider, plan, route, and way the server is used are not specified here, so no particular host or Mumbai route can be singled out.

Use who is affected to narrow the cause

Ask whether the problem affects one viewer, several people on the same connection, or viewers on different networks. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance says that one affected viewer probably has a problem with their computer or Internet connection. If several viewers on one connection report trouble, YouTube says, “There is probably an issue with the viewers’ shared network.” Reports across different connections can point toward an encoder-side problem.

  • Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
  • One viewer: Test that viewer’s device and connection, including playback without the VPS route if one is being used.
  • Several viewers on one network: Compare with a viewer on an independent connection. YouTube notes that 10 users watching 10 streams requires 10 times the inbound network speed; the network needs to carry each viewer’s stream.
  • Many viewers on different networks: If the VPS is sending the stream, check the encoder and YouTube stream health before blaming individual viewer connections.

This pattern is a diagnostic clue, not proof. Confirm it by comparing routes and checking stream-health information.

Compare the VPS route with a direct connection

  1. Keep the comparison consistent. Use the same stream, selected playback quality, device where possible, and time window. Compare playback through the VPS route with playback over an independent connection.
  2. Record when buffering occurs. Note timestamps, the selected quality, whether the video pauses or drops quality, and which viewers are affected. For a VPS encoder, match these times against encoder logs and YouTube health messages.
  3. Compare more than a speed-test headline. For a route comparison, look at sustained throughput, latency variation, packet loss, and whether any route problem coincides with encoder-health errors. A brief high speed reading alone does not establish that the connection can sustain the stream.
  4. Change one relevant variable at a time. If direct playback is stable but the VPS route is not, investigate that route. If the same issue appears without the VPS, focus on the viewer connection or stream delivery instead.

If you are considering another hosting option, compare the same stream and quality during both peak and off-peak periods. The available facts do not support a comparison of specific VPS providers or plans.

If the VPS sends the stream to YouTube

Check YouTube’s live-stream health

Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the stream’s health messages and errors. YouTube’s Live API health guidance includes warnings that insufficient video is reaching YouTube, which can lead to viewer buffering, as well as configuration warnings about video settings such as keyframe frequency and codec. Follow the warning shown for your stream rather than changing unrelated encoder settings.

Check the encoder and outbound connection separately

  • Review the encoder’s output and CPU load around the timestamps when viewers report buffering.
  • Check whether the encoder reports a problem or whether its local preview looks normal. A healthy preview does not prove the VPS’s outbound connection to YouTube is healthy.
  • If the encoder appears healthy, test the outbound connection strength from the VPS and compare the result with stream-health messages. YouTube recommends checking outbound connection strength when the encoder looks healthy.
  • If outbound measurements or route behavior coincide with the problem, give the VPS host timestamps, health warnings, encoder logs, CPU load, and outbound measurements. This is more useful than reporting only that the server is in Mumbai.

Choose latency for the stream’s needs

Latency is relevant when the VPS is sending a live stream. YouTube says normal latency gives viewers the lowest buffering risk. Low and ultra-low latency reduce delay for interaction but raise the risk of playback interruptions; choose based on how much real-time interaction matters and whether the sending connection can sustain the selected bitrate. YouTube describes most viewers on low-latency streams as experiencing latency under 10 seconds, and most viewers on ultra-low-latency streams as experiencing latency under five seconds. Those figures describe the modes, not measured performance for a Mumbai VPS.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

YouTube’s guidance puts the trade-off plainly: “With lower latency, your viewers may experience more playback buffering.” If buffering rises after choosing a lower-latency mode, assess whether the interaction benefit is worth the added interruption risk.

If you are watching rather than encoding

For remote playback or a proxy/VPN route, compare the same video at the same quality through the VPS and through a direct, independent connection. If playback works directly but buffers through the VPS, the VPS route or remote session is implicated; the evidence does not identify which component is at fault. If both routes buffer for only one viewer, investigate that viewer’s device and connection. If many viewers on separate connections experience the same problem, check whether the stream itself has an encoder or YouTube health issue.

Common symptoms and what to check

Symptom Likely area to investigate Next check
Only one viewer reports buffering That viewer’s device or Internet connection Compare playback on another connection and, if applicable, without the VPS route.
Several viewers on one Internet connection report buffering The shared viewer network Compare with a viewer on a different connection; account for the inbound bandwidth needed by concurrent streams.
Viewers on different networks report buffering and the VPS is the encoder Encoder output, stream health, or outbound delivery Match timestamps with Live Control Room health messages, encoder output and CPU load, then test outbound connection strength.
Encoder preview looks healthy but viewers still buffer The outbound path may still be weak Check VPS outbound connection strength and whether YouTube reports insufficient video reaching the platform.
Buffering appears after lowering stream latency Latency mode and the sending connection’s ability to sustain the bitrate Consider normal latency if minimizing playback interruptions matters more than reducing delay.
YouTube reports a video-setting warning The specific encoder configuration named in the warning Correct the indicated setting, such as keyframe frequency or codec, rather than changing unrelated options.
