If a Game Pass game will not download or install, fix the part of the chain that is failing: check Xbox service status and the subscription account first, then work through updates, storage, Microsoft Store, and—on Windows—Gaming Services. On Xbox consoles, start with the correct profile, free drive space, and system updates. On Windows 10 or 11, the Xbox app depends on Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, Windows, and the selected install drive, so repairing only the Xbox app may not solve the problem.

Start with the symptom and error code rather than resetting everything. A missing Install button usually points to availability, account, or compatibility; a download stuck at 0% can involve the queue, network, storage, or Gaming Services. The steps below move from low-risk checks to more disruptive repairs.

What should I check before changing anything?

First determine whether the failure affects one game, every Game Pass game, or all Microsoft Store downloads. That distinction helps prevent unnecessary repairs: a single game may have a catalog or package issue, while failures across the Xbox app and Store suggest a broader account, service, Windows, or storage problem.

  • One game fails: check that the title has a Windows PC edition if you are on PC, remains available in the catalog, and is not waiting on a required add-on or publisher launcher.
  • Every Game Pass game fails: check the subscription account, Xbox status, Store and Gaming Services on PC, and the install drive.
  • All Microsoft Store apps fail: focus on Windows updates, Store cache, and Windows components rather than one game’s files.
  • Install is missing or greyed out: verify account, plan, region, family settings, device compatibility, and whether that game can be installed on your platform.

Write down the full error code and message before troubleshooting. Codes such as 0x87e00017, 0x80070017, 0x87e00196, and 0x80073CF6 point toward different failure classes; preserving the exact wording makes it easier to choose the right next step or explain the issue to support.

How do I fix Game Pass downloads on an Xbox console?

On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, follow Xbox’s least-disruptive sequence: check for a service alert, confirm the right Xbox profile, check drive space, and install available system updates. These are the official first checks for a download that will not start or fails.

  1. Check Xbox service status. Open the Xbox status page while the problem is happening. If it reports an incident affecting games, subscriptions, or downloads, wait for service to recover before changing console settings.
  2. Confirm the profile. Sign in with the Xbox profile that has access to the Game Pass subscription. On a shared console, do not assume the currently active profile is the one that owns the plan.
  3. Check available storage. Review the console’s drive space and make room if it is low. If you are installing to external storage, confirm the drive is connected and recognized.
  4. Check for a system update. Install any available console update, then retry the download.

If a download is merely slow or does not complete, use Xbox’s slow game or app download troubleshooting path rather than repeatedly canceling it. A network or service problem can look like a broken game install.

What does 0x87e00017 mean on Xbox?

Xbox Support says 0x87e00017 means the download failed or paused because of networking issues, or there may be an Xbox service alert. Check the status page first, then troubleshoot the network if Xbox reports services are operating normally. This code alone does not establish that the game files or console drive are damaged.

What does 0x80070017 mean on Xbox?

Xbox Support describes 0x80070017 as a hard-drive problem. Its console guidance says the console may be having trouble getting data from a drive that could be going bad; if the message persists, the console drive or external storage may need replacement. Do not format a drive just because one game failed to install.

For an original Xbox One, Xbox notes that the console and its power supply are no longer manufactured and that out-of-warranty support is no longer available for that product. Consider that limitation before spending time or money on a repair path that depends on official service.

How do I fix Game Pass downloads on Windows 10 or 11?

On PC, treat an install as a chain involving the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, Windows, the signed-in account, and the target drive. Follow the checks in order; move to package removal only if the less disruptive steps fail and the problem fits a Gaming Services error.

  1. Check Xbox status. Open the Xbox status page. If the relevant service is down, wait rather than reinstalling Windows components.
  2. Match the accounts. Confirm the Xbox app and Microsoft Store are using the same Microsoft account that has the active Game Pass plan. You can review services tied to the account at Microsoft account services.
  3. Confirm the game has a PC install. Some Game Pass titles are console-only or cloud-only. Open the Store listing and confirm that the title offers a Windows PC install; also consider that catalog availability changes.
  4. Restart after Windows updates. Open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install available updates, and choose Restart. Microsoft warns that recently installed Windows updates may require a restart before Microsoft Store apps can install. A restart is a better diagnostic than simply choosing Shut down when Fast Startup is enabled.
  5. Update Store apps. Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates and update the Xbox app, Gaming Services, Microsoft Store, and Game Bar if updates are offered.
  6. Check the install destination. In the Xbox app, open Profile > Settings > Installation options. Confirm the chosen drive has enough free space and, if external, is connected and available. If the drive is missing, use Not seeing your drives? and read the reported error before considering any format or partition change.
  7. Reset the Store cache. Press Win+R, enter wsreset.exe, and press Enter. Wait for the blank command window to close and Microsoft Store to reopen; Microsoft says this takes about ten seconds. This clears the Store cache and does not uninstall games.
  8. Repair apps before resetting them. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select Xbox > Advanced options > Repair, and retry. If that does not help, use Reset. Repeat the repair-first approach for Gaming Services and Microsoft Store.
  9. Run the Gaming Services Repair Tool. In the Xbox app, open Profile picture > Support > Gaming Services Repair Tool > Start Troubleshooting. If the Xbox app will not open, use the downloadable tool from Xbox Support’s Gaming Services Repair Tool page. On Windows 10 version 22H2 or older, the tool may require the Local Administrator account.
  10. Use the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter if needed. Windows 10 includes it under Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot. On Windows 11, troubleshooting may route through Get Help.
  11. Repair Windows components only if Store itself is broken. If ordinary Store apps also cannot install after the steps above, open Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator and run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, followed by sfc /scannow. Let each command finish before starting the next.
  12. Escalate a persistent one-game failure. Try installing that title from Microsoft Store Library. In the Xbox app, open the game’s Manage > Files options and use Verify and repair if available. Check whether its publisher requires a launcher listed under Extensions or Library & Extensions.

Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher is the Xbox app baseline listed for PC Game Pass, but that does not mean every game will run on every PC. Check the individual title’s system requirements as well.

Why is the Install button missing or greyed out?

A missing Install button is usually an availability or entitlement issue, not a Gaming Services failure. Check the Store listing and the account before repairing packages.

  • Wrong account or plan: make sure the Xbox app and Store are signed in with the subscription-holding account, and confirm the plan is active.
  • Platform mismatch: the title may be available for console or cloud play but not for local Windows installation.
  • Region or catalog: Microsoft lists country or region restrictions and titles removed from the Store as reasons an app may not be installable. Game Pass catalog membership can change.
  • Family settings: Microsoft family settings can hide apps or restrict access.
  • Device compatibility or authorization: the app may not support the device, or the PC may not be authorized for Store apps. Sign in and add the device to the Microsoft account if prompted.
  • Pending restart: after a recent Windows update, restart before retrying an install.

Installing Gaming Services again will not make a console-only title appear as a PC download, restore a game that has left the catalog, or bypass regional and family restrictions.

What should I do if the download is stuck at 0%, Queued, or Preparing?

These states can come from a blocked queue, pending restart, Gaming Services, drive access, or network interruption. Use the account, status, restart, updates, and storage checks above first; then use the symptom to decide whether a package repair is warranted.

  • Nothing downloads at all: complete a pending restart, run wsreset.exe, and update Store apps from Library > Get updates.
  • Store apps work, but Game Pass games do not: focus on Gaming Services and the Xbox app. Run the Gaming Services Repair Tool before removing the package.
  • It starts and then stops: check free space, external-drive connection, whether the drive sleeps or disconnects, and the network. Some titles need extra working space beyond the listed download size for unpacking, updates, saves, and temporary files. A practical buffer of 10–20% is a rule of thumb, not a Microsoft requirement.
  • Only one title is stuck: compare with another PC Game Pass game. If other titles install, focus on that game’s PC edition, catalog status, add-ons, or package.
  • Every title is stuck: revisit account and status, then check Store, Gaming Services, Windows, and the install drive.

Keep the Xbox app and other launchers closed when retrying a package that reports files are in use. For 0x80073D02, close games and launchers and restart before retrying. For 0x80070005, use an administrator account, install Windows updates, and run the Repair Tool; on Windows 10 version 22H2 or older, the tool may require the Local Administrator account.

When should I repair or reinstall Gaming Services?

Gaming Services is a Microsoft Store package that runs background services used by Xbox PC and PC Game Pass installs; it does not have a useful standalone app window. Repair it when Store apps work but Game Pass installs fail, or when the Xbox app redirects you to Gaming Services. Avoid removing it as the first step.

Try the built-in repair path first

Use the Xbox app’s Profile picture > Support > Gaming Services Repair Tool path. If that cannot resolve the problem, repair Gaming Services from Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Gaming Services > Advanced options, then restart and retry.

Use package removal only for persistent Gaming Services errors

For persistent errors such as 0x87e00196, 0x80073D26, or 0x8007139F, Microsoft’s documented Gaming Services removal command is a later-stage option. Open Windows Terminal as administrator and run:

Get-AppxPackage *gamingservices* -allusers | remove-appxpackage -allusers

Restart Windows, then reinstall Gaming Services through Microsoft Store. The product ID is 9MWPM2CQNLHN; the Store URI supplied for opening its listing is start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN. An alternative command listed for the Store is winget install 9MWPM2CQNLHN -s msstore. Use the official Store route rather than downloading package files from an unofficial site.

For 0x87e00196, Xbox Support identifies a problem with the Gaming Services package. Errors 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F have also been associated with Gaming Services installation or startup failures; Microsoft’s KB5004327 is a Windows 10-specific article, and its original resolution was the June 11, 2021 update KB5004476. Do not apply its registry-key workaround as a universal Windows 11 fix.

Windows services that support Xbox and Store behavior should not be disabled as a performance tweak. In particular, Windows Update (wuauserv), BITS, LicenseManager, wlidsvc, XblAuthManager, and XblGameSave should not be set to Disabled; Manual startup is acceptable.

What does error 0x80073CF6 mean?

WindowsDigitals, citing Microsoft, describes 0x80073CF6 as a package registration failure. If the download reaches 100% before failing, Windows may have received the game payload but failed during the final install or registration step.

Start with Gaming Services repair or the Repair Tool, then try Store cache reset and Xbox app Repair. If the failure appears tied to damaged game-install folders, some Windows troubleshooting guides recommend renaming XboxGames or, on a non-C: drive, WpSystem to an .old name so Xbox can create fresh folders. Renaming can make previously installed games disappear from the library even though files remain in the renamed folder; do not delete the folder unless you intend to remove those files.

A 2023 community method described taking ownership and wiping C:XboxGames. That is destructive and older than the repair and rename approaches; it can remove local PC installs and unsynced saves. Do not begin there.

How do I tell whether storage or the drive is the problem?

Storage problems can stop a download, interrupt a transfer, or cause an install error that resembles a software fault. Check space, connection, format, and drive health before reinstalling Windows components.

  • Console: use Xbox’s hard-drive-space check. If 0x80070017 persists, Xbox says the drive may be going bad and the console drive or external storage may need replacement.
  • PC capacity: leave room beyond the displayed download size. Unpacking, updates, temporary files, and saves can require additional space; 10–20% extra is a practical estimate, not an official Xbox specification.
  • External PC drive: keep it connected and awake throughout installation and launch. Test the internal system drive if an external location repeatedly disappears or fails.
  • File system and cluster size: Xbox PC installation guidance cited by XboxAdvisor says game-install storage needs an NTFS volume with a 4K cluster size. NTFS is required; exFAT and FAT32 are not suitable for this Xbox PC install-storage requirement.
  • Default destination: error 0x80073D21 can mean new content is set to save somewhere other than the system drive, while a particular game requires the system drive. In Windows 11, check Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved.

Do not format a disk just because an install failed. Formatting erases data, and it will not fix account, catalog, network, or Gaming Services problems. If the drive is genuinely full or failing, use the appropriate storage upgrade or replacement path for your device; Xbox lists hard drives and storage among its accessories, including expansion storage for Series X|S.

Can I play while a local install is blocked?

Xbox’s current 2026 cloud page lists Essential with 50+ games and five cloud hours per month, Premium with 200+ games and ten hours, and Ultimate with 500+ games and 15 hours. These catalog counts and monthly hour limits vary by plan, region, and platform; titles and availability can change. Cloud gaming is not included with PC Game Pass, and hours from two subscriptions do not stack.

Xbox lists an eligible Essential, Premium, or Ultimate plan in a supported region, a supported device, a compatible controller (some games support touch), and high-speed internet as requirements. The stated minimum download speed is 10 Mbps; some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and its page lists best performance at 10 Mbps on mobile devices and 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs, and tablets. Streaming uses bandwidth instead of a local game download, so it is not a substitute for a local PC install when the plan or title is ineligible.

What should I avoid while troubleshooting?

Prefer official repair paths and preserve the data on the install drive. Several common “fixes” are more disruptive than the problem they are intended to solve.

  • Do not download Gaming Services packages from unofficial file sites.
  • Do not manually delete folders inside WindowsApps.
  • Do not disable Xbox, Store, or supporting Windows services to save resources.
  • Do not turn off antivirus as an opening step.
  • Do not install registry cleaners, driver-updater subscriptions, or unofficial Gaming Services tools as a first response.
  • Do not jump to a Windows reset or use a destructive folder wipe before trying the official repair sequence.
  • Do not assume Reset is harmless: it can clear local app data and sign-in state. It should not delete games already in XboxGames, but partial downloads may have to start again.

When should I contact Xbox or Microsoft Support?

Contact support when the error persists after the steps for its platform, when a drive-health code repeats, or when account entitlement or a Store registration problem cannot be resolved. Provide the details that distinguish a service, account, software, and storage issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Game Pass cloud hours carry over to the next month?

The Xbox plan chart lists monthly cloud playtime limits, not a bank of hours that accumulates. Xbox also states that cloud hours from two subscriptions do not stack, so check the current plan terms in your region rather than assuming unused time rolls forward.

Can I install a Game Pass game on an SD card?

The fact that Windows exposes an SD card as a save destination does not guarantee that a given Xbox game will install there. If you see 0x80073D21 or the title rejects that destination, set the system drive as the default and retry.

Why does the Xbox app open the Gaming Services Store page?

The redirect indicates the Xbox app cannot proceed without a working Gaming Services package; that package may be missing, damaged, or unable to update. Use the built-in repair tool and Windows app repair options before attempting package removal.
