If Puppeteer screenshots show fallback fonts, wait for the page’s font-loading set before taking the screenshot, then check whether the intended font actually loaded. networkidle2 is a network-activity condition, not a documented guarantee that a particular font is ready. If the font still looks wrong after waiting, investigate failed font delivery, CSS font selection, and fonts available in the browser’s runtime.

Why Puppeteer screenshots can show the wrong font

Navigation readiness and font readiness are separate concerns. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' before calling Page.screenshot(), while its network-idle API describes waiting for network activity to settle. Neither documents that network idle guarantees that the intended web font has loaded or rendered. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide and the waitForNetworkIdle() API explain those respective behaviors.

There are three useful diagnostic branches:

  • Late font readiness: The page eventually uses the expected font, but the capture happens too soon.
  • Font delivery or selection problem: The page’s CSS does not select the expected face, or its font request fails or is blocked.
  • Missing local font or glyph coverage: The browser falls back because a font installed in the runtime is absent or does not cover the characters shown.

A screenshot can look wrong even after font loading settles: a resolved readiness promise does not, by itself, prove that a particular external font asset loaded successfully.

Wait for fonts before taking the screenshot

After navigating, await document.fonts.ready in the page context. Puppeteer documents this readiness mechanism in its PDF options: Page.pdf() waits for fonts by default, and PDFOptions.waitForFonts waits for document.fonts.ready. That is documented PDF behavior; do not assume Page.screenshot() performs the same wait automatically. See Puppeteer’s PDF options and the page evaluation API.

const url = 'https://example.com/landing-page';
const expectedFont = '16px "Your Web Font"';
const sampleText = 'Representative landing page text';

await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });

await page.evaluate(async () => {
  await document.fonts.ready;
});

const fontAvailable = await page.evaluate(
  (font, text) => document.fonts.check(font, text),
  expectedFont,
  sampleText
);

if (!fontAvailable) {
  throw new Error(`Expected font is not available: ${expectedFont}`);
}

await page.screenshot({ path: 'landing-page.png', fullPage: true });

Change the URL, font specification, sample text, and output options for the page you are capturing. Use the font family and weight that the page’s CSS actually requests; a check for the wrong face can give a misleading result. A true result is a useful availability check, not proof that every visible element uses that face. If the screenshot remains wrong, inspect computed styles and font requests.

Choose a navigation condition deliberately

Use the readiness condition appropriate to the site. If network idle helps ensure the page has completed its initial activity, keep it as a navigation signal, not as your font check. Some pages continue making requests, so a fixed network-idle wait may be unsuitable; in that case, use a condition tied to the page’s actual content and still await document.fonts.ready before capture.

Trace the cause when the wait does not fix it

  1. Check the requested face and rendered style. In the page, inspect the relevant element’s computed font-family, weight, and style. Compare those values with the font specification passed to document.fonts.check(). Use representative text that includes characters present in the affected heading or copy.
  2. Inspect font requests and errors. Check the browser’s console and network activity for failed or blocked font requests, incorrect asset URLs, access-control errors, and unsuccessful responses. These are diagnostic possibilities, not an established cause for any particular page.
  3. Check local fonts and character coverage. If only some characters or scripts are missing, inspect the fonts installed in the Linux host or container and whether they cover the needed characters. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guidance notes that Linux dependencies are required and that extra font files may be needed for scripts such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. See Puppeteer troubleshooting.
  4. Compare the browser environments. Record the Puppeteer and browser versions used locally and in production. Confirm whether the job uses the Chrome for Testing browser downloaded by puppeteer or a separately managed browser. puppeteer-core does not download Chrome and is intended for setups where the browser is managed or connected separately. See Puppeteer installation guidance.

When comparing a local run with CI or a container, keep the page URL, viewport, browser binary, Puppeteer version, font requests, and runtime image in view. Differences in the browser setup or available local fonts can produce different output even when the page URL is unchanged.

Compare the three diagnostic branches

Possible branch Useful first clue Next check What the check establishes
Late font readiness The result changes when capture is delayed. Await document.fonts.ready before capture. The font-loading set has settled; this alone does not establish that the intended external asset succeeded.
Font delivery or selection failure The intended face is unavailable or the page renders a fallback. Check computed styles, font request status, and console or network errors. Whether the page requests the expected face and whether its font asset appears to load.
Missing local font or glyph coverage Some scripts or glyphs are missing or substituted, especially in a minimal runtime. Inspect installed fonts and their coverage in the host or container. Whether the environment has fonts suitable for the characters that need rendering.

Common problems and fixes

The screenshot still uses a fallback after document.fonts.ready

Readiness means the font-loading set settled; it is not a success guarantee for the particular face. Check document.fonts.check() with the actual CSS font specification and representative text, then inspect the element’s computed style and the font request’s status.

The check passes, but the output still looks wrong

Confirm that the inspected element actually uses the expected family, weight, and style. Check the affected text for glyphs outside the font’s coverage and compare the browser’s computed styles with the intended CSS. The readiness and availability checks do not verify the appearance of every character in a full-page capture.

Only production or CI has missing characters

Compare its operating system image and installed font files with the local environment. Puppeteer’s Linux troubleshooting guidance specifically warns that extra fonts may be required for some character sets. Install suitable font packages in the runtime image, then recapture using the same browser and page configuration.

Record the Puppeteer and browser versions and check how each environment obtains its browser. The standard puppeteer package downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing browser; puppeteer-core expects a separately managed browser. SEO scope

Correcting a screenshot’s font makes the capture more faithful to the page’s rendered appearance. The Puppeteer guidance cited here covers screenshot timing, font readiness, installation, and runtime fonts; it does not establish that a missing font in a screenshot changes rankings, indexing, or how a search engine renders the page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does networkidle2 guarantee fonts have loaded?

No. It is a network-activity condition, not a documented check that a particular font is ready or being used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Page.screenshot() wait for web fonts automatically?

Puppeteer’s screenshot guide does not document an automatic font wait for Page.screenshot(). Await document.fonts.ready explicitly before capture.
